Is it wrong that my first response to those numbers is excitement over the tamron?

That much better than the excellent mark I? With stabilisation? For me it's a no-brainer (unless Canon decide to release a mark III with IS any time soon)

Lenses / Re: sigma 30mm f1.4... anyone used?

This lens lives on my 600D. The only issues I have with it is it's not compatible with full frame. It is my walkaround lens of choice, but then the only non-prime I have any time for is my 70-200mm L

The 30mm f/1.4 is xtremely sharp, superb build quality and it survived a fall from 1.5 metres onto a gravel path with just a few scuff marks (though I wouldn't recommend testing its dropability for obvious reasons) and did i mention how well f/14 performs in low light conditions?

Having heard all the stories about focus issues for x% of copies, I brought one of those focus testing things you can print off with me when I bought it, and asked to see the exact copy I was purchasing on my camera at point of sale at Yodobashi Camera in Akiba.

No problems.

EOS Bodies / Re: Hugely Disappointed In 5D III Price

I'm still baffled by the people who are constantly prattling on about how the low-MP sensor means better DR and high ISO compared to the (less expensive) D800.

Have those people even seen the D800 sample images?

I so want the 5DIII to have amazing DR and high ISO (in raw, not some jpeg noise reduction hell) but I wouldn't call it just yet.

Bring on the reviews, comparisons etc.

And a RAW file or two wouldn't hurt.

I'm not sure there is much thinking going on in this thread...

I mean we all know canon create multiple prototypes. These pictures could be of any number of prototypes and don't "debunk" the 5DX name at all. Not one iota.

Lenses / Re: Patent: Canon EF 35 f/2 IS

Canon needs to release a nice cheap standard lens for us crop sensor users. Nikon released a very good performing and inexpensive 35mm 1.8 designed for crop sensor cameras, so what about us Canon users?
You might want to look into the 30mm f/1.4 for a crop sensor. It is good even wide open but extremely sharp stopped down, especially for the price. I was lucky enough to get one that focuses correctly first time round (I actually checked it on my camera at point of sale, and checked again later with some focus testing charts).

As for a 35mm f/2 IS, would be great if canon intends to replace the current 35 with it at the same cost and retire the old model, but I somehow doubt that is their intention...

One other thing that has been bugging me, all those out there talking about the d800 and the high MP problems, all that can be addressed by simply shooting in RAW-M ( 5,520 x 3,680 = 20.3 MP) that would basically give you a close match to the current 5dII. I think the d800 is intriguing bc you CAN shoot up to 36 mp if you need too, but for most walk around shooting you will be able to shoot at RAW-M 20.3 mp or even RAW-S at 9 MP and get great results with the enhanced metering features and af.
The downsized raw modes aren't making full use of the sensor, however we are all assuming that the megapickle monster will have inferior IQ. From what I've seen, the IQ and high ISO of the D800 is nothing short of staggering. NR has a comparison of high ISO between the D700 and D800.

The 5D3 has some very strong competition.

If only Nikon's lens lineup was as impressive as canon's...

This is great news, so much used canon gear is sure to flood the market!
