EOS Bodies / Thoughts of Gizmodo today - pretty balanced
« on: April 03, 2012, 08:29:20 AM »
Some words from Gizmodo today...

"for the camera consumer with a budget over £2,500 and no brand loyalty, it’s a tough call between the D800 and the 5D Mark III. They’re both excellent cameras, and they’re good at different things. After testing each for a week apiece, we’re still asking whether the benefits of the Nikon’s high-resolution sensor outweigh the Canon’s versatility. The best way to tell could be to consider how you’ll use the tool—for a pro photographer shooting portraits in a studio, or a Nat Geo correspondent capturing the landscapes of Yosemite, the Nikon could be the clear choice. For a photojournalist on an unpredictable news beat, or even a young professional taking on a wide range of work, the Canon could be a better option. Answering the question for yourself could be a matter of just picking each one up and seeing which feels right in your hands."

I thought that seemed a pretty fair and balanced assessment, from what I've read over the last month. Read the review at:

EOS Bodies / FINALLY ! Available at Amazon UK
« on: March 21, 2012, 12:37:21 PM »
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-Frame-Full-HD-Digital-Camera/dp/B007FGYZFI/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1332347527&sr=8-10

But not from Amazon themselves, but a marketplace seller.

Interesting part is the price: £2,919.99. Which from what I understand is a few quid lower than the UK launch price, in this, the launch week.

I wonder if this is the start of a trend, with stock sitting on shelves unsold?

Maybe I will get my dream camera for £2500 soon... fingers crossed.

EOS Bodies / Flash triggering of older flashes
« on: March 02, 2012, 05:07:57 AM »
Forgive me if I missed this somewhere in the storm of information this morning, but does anyone know:

Can the new 5D3 can trigger older flashes (430EX, EXII, 580EX, EXII)? ... using the old protocol (non radio). I believe the 7D can do this, right?

I really don't need another flashgun, just for the radio thing, and the 430EX that I have can only work on camera, or as a slave (not master), so this would be really handy...

My wife's D80 has all this built in, and its years old. I'm getting a bit fed up with Canon short changing us on things like this...

EOS Bodies / Eye Control Focus
« on: February 25, 2012, 02:51:14 PM »
I've seen a few rumours around the place suggesting that the 5DX may include eye control focus, for the first time since the EOS3. I love my EOS 3 and especially the eye control, which I still use regularly, and really, if I'm being honest, the planned 5DX purchase is my upgrade for my EOS 3, not the crop-frame sensor digital I currently have.

There have been huge developments in processor speed and AF technology since the EOS3, and I wondered what you guys thought of the concept, who has tried it, who loves it, who hates it? What would a revised 61 pt version look like?
