EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 6D Specs Leaked?
« on: September 15, 2012, 01:42:50 PM »
Digicame-info just updated the specs:

Viewfinder coverage:97%, Magnification:0.71X
Size: 114.5x110.5x71.2mm
Af: A new strong low light detection model

5D2 has a 98% viewfinder coverage, D600 is 100%
A new released Pentax k-5 II claimed their 11 point AF detection range is from -3EV, so Canon has a similar one??

6D     114.5x110.5x71.2mm
550D  129 x 98 x 75 mm
60D    145 x 106 x 79 mm

why is the 6D so short?

The original source actually says 144.5 so that was a transcription error.

The rest of the specs have been updated as well. It seems to support SD UHS-I.

Google Translated Specs (update 3):

    - Full size CMOS sensor is a newly developed 20.2 million pixel sensor
    - DIGIC5 + image processing engine
    - Body, which is on par with miniaturized machine APS-C
    - The body is magnesium alloy cover only
    - Built-in W-Fi
    - Built-in GPS
    - AF is 11 points, the corresponding central cross sensor F2.8
    - Burst 4.5 seconds frame / best
    - 30-1/4000 seconds, second sync at 1/180 shutter speed shutter durability of 100,000
    - Drip-proof dustproof
    - 3-inch 1.04 million dot LCD monitor
    - Video - Full HD (1920x1080), 30p/25p/24p
    - ISO 100-25600 (50,51200,102400 extension)
    - Creative Auto
    - SD / SDHC / SDXC media (corresponding UHS-I)
    - Weight: 755g (Battery, including media)
    - (On-sale date) released in December 2012
    - Around 195 000 yen, expected price for EF24-105mm F4L IS kit is around ¥ 295 000
    - 97% pentaprism, Field of view, viewfinder (PS) 0.71 times magnification
    - Dimensions 144.5mm (height) x 110.5mm (width) x 71.2mm size (PS) and (D)
    - AF unit (PS) is a strong new low brightness

It is the information from people you trust. Canon, I thought that number is even or not to use the machine with one digit EOS, it seems to be available as it was in apparently 6D rumor abroad.

Because the sensor has become a newly developed 20MP rather than the diversion of 5D Mark II, I just want to focus on image quality. In addition, because the specifications are not found in other AF unit, I would this new development as well. The price is likely to be about ¥ 20 000 cheaper than the Nikon D600.

I've added an image of the EOS 6D [update].

I replaced the high quality ones on the image below [update 2].

I added a viewfinder specs such as [update 3].

For comparison's sake, here are the dimensions of some of the other Canon bodies and the Nikon D600

650D 133 x 100 x 79 mm
60D 145 x 106 x 79 mm
6D 144.5 x 110.5 x 71.2 mm
D600 141 x 113 x 82 mm
7D 148 x 111 x 74 mm
5D2 152 x 114 x 75 mm

So it sits between the 60D and the 7D in size.

Wow, this topic is quickly turning into doom and gloom!  :o

Where you're wrong is that the design and planning for this camera probably started 3 or 4 years ago.

Thus what you see in this design is Canon reacting to what Nkon/Sony were doing then, not now.

The features (including sensor) would have been locked down sometime last year.

But do product development cycles really work that way? My understanding is that companies develop several prototypes of the same product which allows them the flexibility to match the market demand (or what they see as the market demand) at the time of release. Features are probably locked down months before the release date and not years. This might also be the reason why you can get conflicting rumors for the same product. That's because there are several prototypes in the wild doing the rounds.

SD vs CF.  It's interesting because the 5d has both for convenient comparison ---where I can shoot as much as I damn want writing to CF, when it switches to SD, 3-4 shots and you get the red writing data light.  I have found that the SD write speed is sooo slow that I don't even bother with putting an SD in there.  CF cards of any speed though are lightening fast.  Again, functionality ---this spec sheet has little to none of it.

Isn't that because the 5DIII doesn't support the UHS-I standard for SD? With this technology, SD can rival CF in speed. Maybe someone should try this on the Nikon D800 to see how the SD fares against the CF?

EOS Bodies / Re: D600 vs. leaked 6D specs: a comparison

Regarding the price, CR speculated the price based on the information Digicam-info released about the Japanese price (¥195,000 or around $2511 at the current exchange rate). CR might have used the Japanese price Digicam-info released for the D600 shortly before its official announcement (¥215,000 or around $2768 at the current exchange rate) and the D600 US price of $2100 as the basis of this speculation. I, for one, I'm speculating that the 6D price will be around $1899 which is the price you can currently get the 5D2 for at places like BHPhoto after the instant rebate.

As much as I would like USB3 it is hard to say it's a standard feature in DSLR bodies yet. Both the Sony A99 and the Nikon D600 use USB2 so I don't see any motivation for Canon to do that here. Now, if the camera is going to use SD as its storage medium then it would be a crime not to support UHS-I.

If they are going for a 60D-sized body, they might not have been able to fit the 7D AF module in. They might have prefer to have the smallest and cheapest FF body instead.

Maybe we can get a sense of the size of the body by comparing the kit picture with the 5DIII kit? Here is something I did quickly. This is by no means perfect as the lenses are not exactly matching in the image but should provide a general idea.

I'm sure someone else can do a much better job  ;D

Doesn't make much sense, does it? After going the route of the stereo mic with the 650D Why would Canon go back to mono again?
For the same reason they don't put a flash on the 5d: They expect you to use additional gear like an external flash or microphone anyway. But I'm by no means saying these 6d specs are true.

Fair enough but if the target market is the Rebel crowd who want to upgrade, this will make the camera crippled in certain aspects (mono microphone, no articulating or touch screen and no flash) while having some 'unnecessary' stuff like built-in GPS and internal WiFi.

I'm sure that Canon have done their research, though, and decided that the market wants these particular features. That said, the 24-105 kit price is 1.5x the price of the body. Maybe Canon should offer another more value-oriented kit.

Has anyone else noticed that the microphone for video recording is just below (3 dots in a row) the EOS 6D insignia and not above like in the 7D - the way I hold my camera body, my thumb would cover the microphone??

The screen doesn't appear to be of the articulating type, too.

Seems like the 70D decided it wants to go FF  :P

Even Nikon is using USB2 for the D600 so I doubt Canon would use USB3 for the 6D (Sony is also using USB2 for the A99).

At least they should make the (dual) SD slot(s) SDXC and UHS compatible + stereo mic for video recording. You will get less control in video but hopefully ML would solve that. Let us hope they won't go back to line-skipping in video, though. This way they can have something to counter the uncompressed video via HDMI feature in the D600.

While it's talking about the iPhone 5, I think it somehow applies to Canon as well.

If you think the iPhone 5 is boring, I've got bad news for you. The iPhone 6 will be, too. And the iPhone 7, and every iPhone after that. Minor aesthetic variations on the same well-loved theme. They'll also, in all likelihood, be fantastic.

The only thing that will change the iPhone's design is a dramatic decline in iPhone market share, but that doesn't seem in the offing. Not any time soon, anyway. It takes years to slow down a juggernaut.

So get comfortable with your boring iPhone and your boring iPad and your boring MacBook Air. They're that way because they have to be. Because we want them to be. Because it's the only way that makes sense.

The Worst Thing About the iPhone 5 Is Also the Most Brilliant

EOS Bodies / Re: *UPDATE* More Canon EOS 6D Specs Surface [CR1]

Hi

with D600 out (without Vari-Angle Clear View LCD, Sony A99 (limited turning LCD)
what are the odd / chances that the new Canon budget FF camera will have a turning LCD ??

any comments are welcome ...
Based on the rumor, it won't have an articulating screen. And that makes sense, since neither the 7D nor 5D series has it either.

Personally I'd prefer the articulating screen, but, I'm not expecting it

Well, that depends on which rumor you choose to believe. One says it does (NL) while the other says it doesn't (CR). I personally think it's a big feature and might entice the Rebel owners to upgrade. It is quite likely that the 6D's body will be less sturdy than the 7D and the 5D and more like the 60D so it makes sense for it to have features from the Rebel lineup; features that the 70D is likely to have. Then again, might be just wishful thinking on my part.

I personally hope that Canon would utilize the articulating touchscreen from the 650D (and the other bells and whistles, too). It should help set them apart and compensate for the missing MPs and slower shooting speed.

If Canon develops its most sharp and versitile zoom, how much do you think it should cost? $1.5k?  ???  Yes, you need to pay extra, but you know what you're paying for.

Lets see Apple produced its fastest iPhone ever with the iphone5, does it cost more? nope. Whats the difference? Apple's production is in China, the Chinese currency, the RMB is pegged to the dollar right now. Prices don't move much, for the time being anyway. Canon's production is in Japan, the Yen has gained on the dollar because we are printing tons of money. The Yen price of the new lens is not much higher than  the 24-70mm VI, same went for the price of the 5dmkiii everyone was pitching a fit about. American's don't understand currencies or their own monetary system. I guess when the Chinese unpeg their currency we will then be complaining bout how much EVERYTHING is going up in price. Its not that the price is up, the dollar is down.

But why should the consumer care? Canon needs to act proactively. Japanese car makers, in the face of fierce competition, have learned to adapt. The majority of Japanese cars sold in the US are actually made in North America. They also have other plants around the world. They are basically trying to limit the production from Japanese plants to the domestic market as much as possible.

Why couldn't Canon move some of its major plants offshore? Granted, they have several offshore plants but are these enough? Would consumers really value the "Made in Japan" more than, say, a 20% reduction in MSRP? Maybe they should start experimenting with new models. If Canon can make the 6D outside, you have bet they can price it sub-$2K.

In the end, it all depends on the company's strategy and perceived importance of itself in the market. Let us not forget that the strong Yen is actively driving many Japanese companies into the red. Sony, Panasonic and Sharp are all bleeding because of it. Sharp is mortgaging itself to stay alive; even with the iPhone 5 LCD deal.
