12800 ISO is fine at 5d mkIII, even 25600 is quite okay.

Yeah Act, I agree that the main thing here is the f/5.6 at 300mm, and it's quite capable of delivering great results though. I'm sad to hear that 70-200 f/2.8 II is a pain to carry around though - I was looking forward to maybe getting it sometime in the future, but since it's impossible to walk all day with it... Then it appears like I've just saved myself some $2500 worth of equipment :-)

Don't get me wrong- the 70-200 2.8 is an EXCELLENT lens and for what it does, there's nothing else like it. It is best for sporting events (if you are close) as well as autograph/book signings, which often take place indoors (and f5.6 just won't cut it- I hate using flash). It is extremely versatile and I like that. But, it is not a lens I would want to sling around my neck and walk around with all day long...even for the couple of hours I use it, it gets tiring. But it is worth it when you view the images afterward!

The 70-300L is the telephoto lens I use when it is not worth lugging the extra weight of the 70-200. Basically, outdoor events in good lighting and animal shots where the variable aperture isn't an issue. Plus, 100mm of extra reach is gained and for animal shots, it can make a BIG difference!
Well, I was hoping 5d mark III's ISO performance would allow me to use it indoors. We'll see about that :-)

That's a very nice shot indeed briansquibb! Overall I'm happy with the lens, your advice was one of those which convinced me in the end :-)

Thank you guys for your help! This community is golden, I am reassured of that :-)
Just got the 70-300 and it's amazing. Shooting indoors with f/4-5.6 at 12800 ISO, after some post images look extremely appealing.

12800 ISO, 300mm, f/5.6, 1/60, IS on, some post in LR4CR2

I personally like the Sigma's 17-70 OS. While it is not kicking the stars from the sky when it comes to IQ, it's very decent. It even has f/2.8 somewhere like 17-20mm, and it being 70mm on the log end allows you to leave it on your camera at all times. If you need a telephoto range, Canon's 70-300 IS (non-L) is a steady contender here.
But you can get one 24-105L for the price of these two lenses, and it would be my favourite. Its IQ is great, it's compact and lightweight, and while you will miss some WA, you will be rewarded with great IQ and constant aperture.

If you're looking for a luxurious kit, EF-S 17-55 and EF 70-300L is the way to go though.

Just my 2 cents.

Lenses / 70-300L on 5D Mark III
« on: May 27, 2012, 04:06:35 PM »
There are plenty of topics discussing the 70-300L, but they are from the pre-5DmkIII era. I've been thinking of getting a nice tele lens to complement my kit 24-105 f/4, and I cannot find a single reason not to choose the 70-300L. It will be a lens that is going to be used during in field action during walks, political meetings, etc, so hauling the 70-200 f/2.8 mk II around is going to be tiresome, and it is widely regarded that 70-300's IQ is similar to that of the 70-200 f/4 IS, while still having 100mm extra.

Since 5DmkIII is here and slower aperture problems might be overcome with higher ISO numbers, is there a reason not to choose the 70-300L? Thank you.

Well I wasn't initially saying: "I SHOOT JPEG! (we should make such a t-shirt as well btw) PROVE ME WRONG!", it's just that I'm so used to using Lightroom, and since I didn't have any important work to do, I shot JPEG since LR didn't support mkIII RAW at the time, and I wasn't specifically disappointed with the outcome. But I switched from T2i to 5DmkIII, so the lack of disappointment may have been due to this quite substantial fact :P

I just wanted to hear what you guys think, since I value the opinion of CR's community. Since, well, the site is awesome, the community's awesome and people taking part in discussions are awesome as well.

Sorry for abundance of positive emotions, I'm still thrilled by my MKIII :<

Well, it seems mkIII's JPEG engine is vastly improved compared to the previous model.
That's why I'd like you to share your views and opinions regarding the classic RAW vs JPEG debate.
Is it worth shooting RAW in everyday conditions? Is shooting JPEG no longer a crime considering the mkIII's improvements? Is RAW worth the extra space while JPEGs are so good?

What do you think?
As for me I found mkIII's JPEGs much more forgiving when it comes to shadows/highlights recovery, and I no longer consider a shootout failed when I take a glimpse at my LCD and notice that I shoot JPEGs.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Deleting files from both cards
« on: May 21, 2012, 06:40:05 AM »
I have my 5DIII set to dual card recording - RAWs on CF and JPEGs on SD for periods when I need photos right from the camera. The problem is that sometimes I delete failed shots right after viewing them on the camera's LCD screen, but they are deleted only from one of the cards. Is there an option to delete both files from both cards?

Sorry if it's been already asked, I have failed to find similar topics despite my best efforts :<
Thank you.

That's one good review, thank you for sharing your thoughts :)

Sometimes I shoot at 12800 ISO, and I feel that jpegs out of the camera with in-camera medium noise reduction are better than my RAW results with LR 4.1. Is it my fault or LR is not up to the game yet?

Software & Accessories / iPad RAW editing

I'm trying to find an app that works, and they say PhotoRAW downsamples your images. Has anyone had any luck with the new iPad? Its screen and processing powers should allow for "smooth" RAW workflow in my opinion.

Thank you.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but does anybody know if this function corrects barrel distortion as well? Thank you.

With 5DMKIII the low-light capabilities of f/4 are increased greatly when compared to the f/2.8 on 5DMKII, not taking bokeh and DoF into account though.
