EOS Bodies / Re: A Brief 2013 Canon Roadmap [CR1]

135 F/1.8L IS USM <----- I Really wants one.

135 f/1.4L IS USM

That would put it in relative aperture size and MSRP to the 200 f/2.0L IS USM ....   ;D

So what should we be expecting here then ?

A ~28Mp camera with an APS-H sensor (with crop mode compatibility ? )  ? Or are we expecting more of the same with an APS-C sensor ?

For those who don't get this camera, let me suggest that we may not understand the generational and cultural differences.

For old American guys like me, a viewfinder is non-negotiable. But for many people, especially the young, who shoot mostly with smartphones, the idea of sticking your eye up against the back of the camera is equally foreign and unnatural.

Over the last couple of years, I've often scratched my head at some of Canon's product announcements. But, I've also learned that they seldom get the market wrong. I expect this one to be a big winner.

That sums up very nicely what seems to be happening indeed.

Canon has proven time and again that they are masters of the 'long game'. And they probably have a road map for things 3~5 years down the line for this too.

Seriously ... why does it matter how a camera looks ?? Then for that case, I guess you guys don't use DSLR's at all .. coz they are butt ugly ...  ??

If you really want the cache... Get a Leica M-9.

Interesting, from these picts, seems to be a pretty compact setup.  Barely 80mm in height... ?

I don't think that J1/V1 from Nikon are comparable to the EOS M due to their sensor size. With adaptor I can use my lens range as I used it with my 40Ds - the 10-22 will stay a 16-35 equiv lens. I don't want to buy into different systems except perhaps FF - and I collected my lenses according to that change.

Let's see the EOS M as an intelligent back cap for my 10-22 that I use very seldom but it would be great to have fast access to its focal range with an EOS M attached to it.

That I agree. It would be a very appealing camera to existing EOS lens owners due to the equivalent DOF and focal length with a EF/EF-s adaptor.

As for your question on compatibility, if its compatible with EF, EF-S should not be an issue. The EF-S focussing plane distance is still further than the flange distance for mirrorless systems since it requires a clearance for the mirrorbox in APS-C/EF-S cameras.

So, if its designed as as EF mount adapter and works with the focusing distance of the EF lenses, it will be able to clear EF-S too.

About the optical viewfinder: Not only kidding - I have a 35/70mm optical viewfinder and used it on my 20D (with a 8000x gray filter) and for fun. It is an interesting way to "compose" images. Just have to find out where I have stowed it away.

If you die-die must have a viewfinder, there are ready made solutions on the market for those who have used it for video:

There are of course cheaper versions as well as more expensive ones depending on your preference.  In fact, for fine focusing of larger aperture manual lenses, using this in conjunction with liveView beats any focusing screen.

Think its a pretty decent looking thing. I do like it.

But what's most crucial to me is the picture quality.  QUALITY.

From the latest picts, judging by the flange size relative to the filter ring 43mm and relative to the sensor, looks indeed to be APS-C sized sensor.

As for the part regarding no build-in flash but flash mount part ...  neither does the 5D, 1D cameras ...

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon's Next Full Frame Camera [CR2]
« on: July 18, 2012, 05:11:28 AM »

well look at the chronology of the canons price factor.
500$ less cheaper D800 beets the crap out of 500$ more expensive 5Dmk3.

so i guess D600 performs as well as price mentioned, but canon never did perform as their worth.

don't get what you mean in the first sentence.

But in my part of the world, the 5DMkIII is actually cheaper than the D800 in the stores. And availability is way, way better. The stores basically can get hold of replacement stocks within 5-6 working days right from the first batches ( which were like barely 2~3 weeks after launch). D800 was a rare commodity for a few months in fact. None of the shops could get hold of any for multiple weeks ( stretches into a month + ) after their first batch. And it was similarly so for replacement batches.  Even now, the shops cannot confirm when their next shipment be should they finish their existing stock.

What good is a camera that you can barely get hold of versus one that you could have used to shoot for thousands of quality photos and captured plenty of priceless memories in the same elapsed time ?

Putting aside that I think this whole mirrorless thing is silly, why would anyone want to pair them with a bunch of closely-spaced slow primes?

Want a reasonable mirrorless interchangeable lens body?  Build it the size of the S100 and make sure the kit zoom and at least two primes of different focal lengths - each faster than f/2.8 - fit entirely inside the body when not in use.  The 24/2.8, 28/2.8 and 40/2.8 are totally unsuitable to that purpose because they are EF-mount, and thus have too large a backfocus distance to make that happen.

Such a thing would sell to compact-camera upgraders if it were cheap enough (under $600 with kit lens).

Then you have really tiny image sensors like S100.

Then what's the point of interchangeable lenses if the camera becomes sensor limited instead ?  And you can't get image quality and contrast approaching/equaling DSLR levels ?

Might as well just still with a compact then ?

There's no way the 7D replacement will not accept APS-C lenses. So no sensor bloat - that's just silly.

What if it could and was 1.3X crop as well ??

PROSUMER is just a cynical marketing ploy to sell slightly upgraded Rebels for more money. By calling these cameras prosumer they make the buyers feel special.

Nikon doesn't sell prosumer cameras, just consumer and pro. The Nikon D300S DX (APS-C)  has the same focusing and metering as the FX (Full Frame) D3s. While neither the POS 60D or the EOS 7D have pro level focusing or metering. WTF is wrong with Canon ???

You read these specs from Nikon too literally.

Have you ever actually compared these Nikon cameras side by side for their so called 'pro grade' AF and metering??  Go do that with the same glass side by side ... You will be "amazed" by the differences...

Here you are then

First shows 8-15 and the height of the dome and how close the top ot the hood is in height . The filter would be about the same height

Second shows the image at 8mm, clearly show a lot of the inside of the hood - that is where the light would come from. Put a mount there and the visual image would be blinkered

I am guessing a 200mm square filter would be needed - perhaps off a MF

I have no need of a filter so haven't persued it any further

Good grief ... in the context of APS-C and APS-H ...  I really thought you were talking about the Sigma 8-16mm  !  :o

http://www.sigmaphoto.com/shop/8-16mm-f45-56-dc-hsm-sigma

Which really is the basis of what I was talking about on 'equivalent FOV' ....

EOS Bodies / Re: Ultra wide lens for APS-H sensor cameras

A Sigma 12-24mm EX DG is still under 16mm FF equivalent on an APS-H. Its well in the ultra-wide range.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 7D Successors [CR1]

No it probably will not.

The 8-16 and 12-24 have almost identical FOV's. I can use the full range of my 12-24 on my 5DmkII, I don't see why you can't for the 8-16.

AND as I pointed out earlier, you just have to use the X-pro filters and compatible kits as only those are wide enough for the 12-24mm.   Anything smaller won't cut it. It needs at least a 127mm diameter filter.
