Lenses / Re: I'm in a lens pickle

It all really depends on how you shoot. My ideal lens suite will be different from yours. For example, a 70-200 2.8 IS II would be nice, but I'm usually shooting while on hiking or cycling expeditions and can't afford the size and weight. Plus, I usually shoot wide so I rarely need reach over 100mm. So it really depends on what lengths, speeds, sizes, and weights suit your type of shooting. I realize that's probably not going to help you pick, I'm just pointing out that lenses are really personal.

Good point.

I wonder if the higher mkIII price has to do with trying to keep mkII sales going.

Would it make sense to to go with a mkIII body and then another lens other than the 24-105? The mkIII + 24-70 2.8 II would make one hell of a combo, for example.

If you're shooting at a professional level where you need every edge you can get and the mkII might mean not getting the shot while the mkIII might mean getting the shot, then I think it makes sense to upgrade.

But, for the enthusiasts, I'm of the opinion that it probably makes more sense to upgrade every other generation. I have a 5D and while I was tempted when the mkII came out I felt that upgrading to a new model after only three or four years was too soon. I couldn't justify the expense after having the 5D for such a relatively short period of time. I think the enthusiasts, the jump in IQ is really only worth it to make the leap every other generation. So for those who have a mkII, it probably makes sense to hang on to it until the mkIV or whatever, or hold off on the mkIII until we see a price drop that's enough to make you bite.

The other option is that if you have money to burn, then go for it. There are certainly worse things you could spend your money on. Unfortunately, most of us aren't in that category.

I'm quite satisfied with the 22mp sensor. It's a bit more resolution than I need, but otherwise the camera fits my needs extremely well.

You'll definitely notice a difference in low light on high ISO. As for wide angle, your best bet is probably the 16-35 2.8. Although, I love my 17-40 f4. People say the corners are bad, but I don't really notice with mine. Maybe I'm just not picky enough.

Sweet! Thanks guys. First image is posted in the Best Landscapes thread in Landscapes forum. :)

I've seen some amazing stuff from guys who I consider to be at the pro level in terms of skill and knowledge but using rebels. I've also seem some rather mediocre stuff come from guys who have great gear but sadly don't know what they're doing.

I've long maintained that the photographer makes the camera. If you put entry level gear in the hands of a pro then you're going to get pro images because the photographer knows how to use the camera to its full potential and has the skill to properly compose the shop. If you put pro level gear in the hands of an amateur then you're going to get amateur level shots.

Pro gear can only be pro gear if it's used by someone who knows what they're doing and can use the camera to its full potential.

Long time lurker and newbie so far as posting goes.

Anyway, I'd like to post some of my photos here. I've got a DeviantArt account where I've got them all posted. Is it cool to post here a thumbnail with a link to the full size version over at DA? Just thought I'd make sure... don't want make it look like I'm just advertising my DA gallery.

I appreciate CR guy is in Ecuador testing his new 5D3/X  :) :) - but he has remained some what quiet over the last few days, posting non '5D' stuff almost as a diversion.

I'm hoping he's enjoying those 30+mp pictures from his 5DX and that 1DX AF on his 5D3  8)

Bet he'll be back for next week just as it all gets really busy.

Idle fact or cold hard speculation? :P
