Nothing too special about this shot, other than I shot it with something not usually used for birding... a 24-70...

I was in Wisconsin near Lake Michigan with my family and this guy came in close to see if we were serving up french fries or something.

Software & Accessories / Re: updating to Maverick 10.9?

I will add, I understand your concerns.  I had some initial issues with Mountain Lion 10.8.  Ran a Disk Utility permissions repair and did the command + option + P + R (zap the PRAM) on bootup and it fixed a couple of things for me (slow bootup, slow shut down).  Something to look into doing.

That said, I suspect 10.9.2 is on the horizon.  Hold out a bit longer.  If you use Aperture, keep in mind the latest 3.5.x version only works on Maverick.

No issues here on a early 2011 15" MBP w/ 16 GB RAM.  HDD replaced with a Seagate 750GB hybrid SHHD.  I do not use the Mail app, but have heard that is quite buggy still.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Is Sony junk....

I've never had good luck with any Sony product I purchased.  I want to like them; my friends have good luck with them, I just don't.  Their cameras are interesting given they purchased Minolta some years back and seem to be innovating.  My Dad taught me to shoot on a Minolta XG-1 and he still has some lenses for it.  I suggested he look into a Sony full frame, but he still won't buy digital... Of course he is in his 70's now.

While the A7(r) looks promising, I am more interested in the FujiFilm X system even though is is crop.

The older USB2 model (and it did not take long for it to fail).

I got the Hoodman RAW Steel via Amazon a month ago and am pretty pleased with it.  A little pricey, but I had the Lexar reader and it failed me.  Just decided to quit working one day (PC & Mac).

I'll add a little contrast to the thread with my shot.  My 10 year old daughter in her first year of travel basketball after getting called for her first foul.  She looked to me with the look of "I didn't do it, Dad!"

Great thread!  This is what I shoot very often with my girls in basketball.  I've got a freshman and 5th grader.  My oldest had been playing in travel leagues for a couple of years and my youngest just started.  Will be very happy to view this thread often for some ideas.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: UWA: Tokina vs Rokinon

I have the Rokinon 14mm and am quite pleased with it.  Also, there has been a filter system released for it, but it is pricey and I have yet to read a review on it.  WonerPana from Fotodiox.

Dfine 2, for me, will not launch via LR 5.2 on x64 Windows since the update.  There is a dump in the application log that I sent to Nik via email.

Not sure if anyone else has the issue or not.  Mac version works fine.  Stand alone 32-bit works; 64-bit stand alone does not.  But neither the 64 or 32 bit versions will launch when invoked from LR.

I guess it is Analog Efex pro, that´s new:

I was working in Lightroom 5 last night and went to use Color Efex and saw that the Analog Efex was there... guessing Google is pushing it because I never downloaded.  Wondered where it came from.

I still have my original email, but the links are specific to my purchase.  Re-downloaded new installers for Mac and Windows.  Thanks for the tip.

Wow... glad your 5Diii survived the fall.  Might be cool to see some photos of the lens dismantled if you are in a position to do so.

Software & Accessories / Re: External HDD for backups
« on: August 01, 2013, 08:04:27 PM »
When I get those drives, I just first immediately "slick" them, and wipe off all the WD programs and all they put on there, and then just use them as a regular, harddrive.

I dunno when they started putting that cr@p on their portable harddrives, but it is annoying a bit.

I just need them for storage, not management.

The encryption is not in the software included on the drive, it is a hardware based solution between the USB bus and the SATA connector on the internal hard drive.
