Lenses / Re: buying advice: canon 85mm f1.2 II or f1.8?
« on: December 15, 2014, 10:06:31 AM »
ferrari or fiesta? i don't see it that way, esp when the 1.8 focuses so much faster and is lighter, to me that sounds more like a ferrari, but it certainly does price out more like your analogy. i've never used the 1.2 but have studied it pretty extensively. i have the 1.8, and while it focuses fast, i've never really been all that impressed. i wish i had my 100mm f2 back instead. i find the 1.8 to miss focus often, and it's got a large amount of purple fringing on some things. for me the 1.2 looks to focus to slowly and is too expensive, while the 1.8 just doesn't wow me either. I'm waiting to see a sigma 85mm 1.4 ART materialize.

EOS Bodies / Re: 7D MkII vs 1D MkIV "real-world"
« on: December 09, 2014, 08:24:50 PM »
One feature that sold me on the 7D2 was the flicker detection.  If you shoot indoor sports with bad lighting, you can take a series of consecutive shots and each one will have a different exposure.  The post cleanup takes forever to make those look good.  The 7D2 will detect when your lighting flickers, and you can set it so the shutter only goes off during the brightest cycle of the flicker.  Now I can't wait to shoot my next table tennis tournament under those horrid lights :)

that's what i've been saying, for indoor sports it is a game changer.

Lenses / Re: Review: Sensor Performance of the 7D Mark II
« on: December 01, 2014, 07:50:40 PM »
What is really game changing, sony A7 or a7s. Or new 5-axis sensor stabilization in A7 II. Btw it cost as much as 7d2.

If a game-changing tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?  Technically yes, but it really doesn't matter all that much.

I'll bet the 7DII sells more than all the a7 models combined.

nice, and ditto.

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Samsung NX-1 Review
« on: December 01, 2014, 12:54:19 PM »

If this camera had come from Canon or Nikon (or any of the established players) we'd all be changing our underwear, we'd be so excited. So, read-up on the specs wherever you find them online, but let's dive in and see what all these amazing features mean in the real world, and how well they perform.

yes, because that would mean it came along with all the cool things about canon/nikon that we like. you know, they aren't going to bail on cameras, complex flash systems, well thought out and understood controls and menus, decades of lenses in the wild, very good customer support, ability to rent nearly anywhere, very good 3rd party support. that sort of stuff.  the specs of the samsung are really something. i'd just like to see a canon version. I don't disagree with them letting others establish a beachhead as a bad idea.  They should squash it and let the chips fall where they may. As much as i dislike Apple, they do seem to be able to kill their own products when needed. ipod<iphone, stuff like that.

Lenses / Re: I *HATE* UPS.
« on: November 29, 2014, 07:53:47 AM »
i love UPS. i've never had a single problem, my delivery guy is super awesome, my tracking numbers always work(unlike post office codes that simply say, yeah, something was sent). I've bought tons of goods, and sold just as much without a issue. I use UPS for the av/photography stuff i've sold on ebay all around the world. sold to places i cant even spell or pronounce, and it's always found it's mark without error.

IBIS...? so, In Body Image Stabilization... okay, got it.

this new body has it, and it's a big deal? alright.
i thought/assumed that most of these sony cams had this all along. You know minolta had it almost a decade ago. i used it. it worked pretty well. you could see how well it was working in the viewfinder, but it worked. since sony took them over a good many years ago, i thought it was in just about everything they offered. I still jumped ship to Canon, and would again.
Frankly i'm still impressed that they managed to get this IBIS to work with a FF sensor, as at the time it was considered impossible.
sure, keep cranking out the products Sony. good luck ever finding the 3rd party/pro support that way. i'm sure people like magic lantern are interested in spending time unlocking your gear just so you can dumpster the whole thing a couple times a yr.(i wouldn't be surprised if the very core of the imaging pipeline is handed this way)

16mm is not really that close to 20mm in my book. sharp at f2? no/very low coma? sounds very good to me.

Software & Accessories / Re: 1D X + EC-S Focusing Screen - Save Your Money
« on: November 17, 2014, 12:13:40 PM »
I use an ee-s screen in my 5dmk1, and i can't say that i noticed much of a difference. I don't have any lenses slower than 2.8, but i bet they would show a dimmer view. I actually find manual focusing easier with my 5dmk3 and the stock screen -vs- modded 5dmk1.

So the battery life isn't exactly where you'd want it? Would you say it's worse than the 7d?

I turn it off when i set it on the shelf when i'm done for the day, and when changing lenses. it's just what i do.
As for opening the battery door and letting the camera switch off, it used to be that you would lose your images doing that with canon cameras. I bet you still would if the camera ram isn't flushed. It was something that some reviewers harped on for years.

were you on top of that deer when you gave him a lower back shot. with a crossbow? damn dude.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 7Dii vs Nikon D750 Dynamic Range Test
« on: November 13, 2014, 09:19:49 PM »
when this was first posted i was a bit confused because that step wedge didn't look at all like what i am used to seeing. Honestly i wanted to grab a remote and work with the white/black levels. I believe Jrista is pointing you in the correct direction. I'm ISF cert and with i used to calibrate monitors the step wedge was an important pattern, esp with digital gear. Its amazing what happens to a step pattern when you start cranking on the white/black levels with digital equipment. Not so much with analog gear, but i suppose i may as well forget anything i might know about CRT projectors... ah well.

EOS Bodies / Re: I killed my brand new 7D MK2 today

recently out of some fear of going this very thing, i started using a USB cable to dump images into my computer. Of course that won't help me in the field when i've reached a cards capacity, but what can you do? well, i guess one could buy a really huge card...
