Lenses / 35mm f1.4 -vs- 50mm 1.2
« on: October 31, 2012, 08:51:45 PM »
I've read all the reviews, I know all the stats, but i'd like to ask the collective.
                35mm f 1.4 -vs- 50mm f1.2
wide open to f5.6 or so, who's the sharpest in the center, and corners on FF.
Is the 35mm sharper at f1.4 and f2 than the 50 at the same f-stops?

Lighting / phottix odin, thanks

just wanted to thank you guys who've spoken so highly of these flash triggers. i bought a set last week and I'm happy, and impressed. Even the firmware update went smoother than i could have hoped for. I've got a wedding in two weeks that i'll be soloing and these are going to be very handy. Thanks.

Video & Movie / fun movie shot with 7d/5d.
« on: October 07, 2012, 08:23:28 PM »
not shot by me, but a friend of my brothers is either in this movie, or helped make it, or both... yeah, i haven't gotten that figured out yet, but i was told it was shot on 7d and 5dmk2 equipment, with nikon glass.

Lenses / another 24-70mmv2 review
« on: September 24, 2012, 09:47:03 AM »

complete with comparisons to the 24-105. a lens i just bought, and now i'm wondering if that was such a great idea. well, i think i'm still good. with the money saved over the 24-70v2 i could still add the 35mm1.4 or 50mm1.2, or 24mm1.4, or...  so yeah, still okay i think. It's just i like to keep my amount of gear to a minimum. so I'd rather have one super lens than two very good lenses, but they all have different strengths, so what's a guy to do?

anyway, another review.

Lenses / new ziess 55mm, redefining?
« on: September 06, 2012, 09:12:09 PM »

"A must-see attraction is a high-performance, full-format SLR camera lens with manual focus. With a focal length of 55 mm and aperture of f/1.4, this lens is the first model of a new product family designed for demanding users. Thanks to a newly developed optical design, this lens is superior to conventional full-frame lenses, and it achieves with powerful full-frame, full-format cameras an image performance that until now has only been seen with medium-format systems."

real deal of fluff?  cost estimates? Am i reading the lens correctly? 82mm filter on a 55mm 1.4?

I've only recently had this happen but now that i'm doing more of this thing it's bound to happen all the time. I was really surprised to see it on my images. I didn't see a thing on the LCD out in the field, but i'll be looking closely in the future. I've added an image that most clearly shows the problem. thanks

Lenses / quess how many lenses, ebay foolishness.
« on: August 19, 2012, 09:41:08 PM »
Now i could be wrong, but how many different lenses are photographed in this ebay ad, and what exactly is this guy trying to sell?
 i swear i see a listing for a 2.8, then a photo of an f4IS, then a 2.8IS v2 box, then...? And i thought I had crummy ebay ads.

I've read that with the d800 you need the best lenses to really reap the rewards of all those megapickles. I guess that's probably true. I've read and seen tests showing it's very good noise performance. Cool. But I've also read that you need to go over the 1x focal length "rule". Something like 2x or i even read 3x somewhere. wow. Is this proving true? It just seems to me that if those new "rules" are correct, i would think that many times i would have to bump up my ISO settings to deal with that. So i could possibly be running a stop or 2 higher than i would using something else. like a 5dmk3 or whatever camera of less resolution. That would really change things. Now that could be wrong and everything is just peachy at 1x focal length. That's fine too. No agenda here. I'm mostly a Canon shooter and I've never thought about swapping. I'm just curious about this stuff.
BTW- I didn't know where to post this. i hope this is a suitable place.

EOS Bodies - For Video / "video has been automatically stopped" ?
« on: May 01, 2012, 01:54:05 PM »
That's the message I've twice gotten seconds after starting to record some video. I believe both times I was shooting 1080/30fps all-i. Anyone else have this happen? Any thoughts of what gives?

Lenses / Is anyone interested in the 24mm2.8IS?
« on: April 22, 2012, 09:05:06 PM »
I'm wondering what I should expect from this lens, IQ wise. Where will it place in the canon lineup? i know the older nonIS isn't highly regarded, i know the 1.4 is a pretty awesome 1.4, and this will have the distinction of having IS. I even like the idea of sharing filters with my 85 1.8.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / FoCal likes the mk3 AF

looks like i shouldn't bother to spring for the faster SD cards...

EOS Bodies / Anyone else wish Canon would ditch the 3x2 format?
« on: March 12, 2012, 10:30:17 AM »
Well, I don't know if i want it to be ditched, but what about a giving us something else? Sure with modern high mp cameras we can just crop whatever, but i still think i'd rather have a different shape. Or maybe a sensor with a 3x2 and maybe a 4x5 option, and i'm not referring to inbody cropping. i haven't done the math to see what the mp would work out to with the pixel density of say the 5dmk3, but wouldn't a 4x4 format offer the most sensor real estate anyway? If you were interested in such things... I don't know if it's even technically possible for this arrangement, but i think it could be advantageous.  Or is it just me that finds 3x2 to not usually be the best arrangement?
