Another option instead of using Adobe DNG Converter - try  Import to Lightroom as DNG.

When you import to Lightroom you can just choose 'Copy as DNG'.  Lightroom converts to DNG as it imports your photos.

Then you can easily open, edit, merge, etc your images straight from Lightroom to Photoshop CS5 without the ACR problems.

Just remember to check the Lightroom prefs for DNG Conversion compatibility so, it matches whichever version of Camera Raw you have - i.e. Camera Raw 6.6 for CS5.

Also, look at the 'Embed Original Raw' option. Embedding keeps another copy of the raw file inside the DNG so, there'd be basically two copies of your photo in each DNG - which of course, means huge DNG files. I'd leave this off and just keep my original CR2s in an archive backup somewhere safe and just use normal non-embedded DNGs as my working image files.

Thanks everyone!  I have not used the DNG format in the past, but now you have me thinking.  If I just convert from CR2 to DNG, do I lose anything?

Don't Export it. Select your image to be edited in PS in the Lightroom Library module, on the top menu bar go Photo:Edit In:Edit in Photoshop CS5.5, you will then get the dialogue box pictured below. Click the "Render using Lightroom" box and the Lightroom RAW engine will render the image, not ACR for PS.
That's what I have been doing.  I should have been more clear.  I can't open as smart object, merge to panorama, merge to HDR or open as layers from Lightroom to PS.

I bought a 6D a couple weeks ago and am having trouble with the Lightroom (version 4.4) and Photoshop (CS5 Extended) working together.  Lightroom works fine with my CR2 files from the 6D, but I can't export the 6D's CR2 files from Lightroom into Photoshop.  I've never had this problem with CR2 files from my 7D.

I'm an amateur and can't afford to update my version of Photoshop every time Adobe adds a few features.  Am I out of luck?

Help!

HDR - High Dynamic Range / Re: Post your HDR images:
« on: April 25, 2013, 06:02:10 PM »
I recently moved into a new apartment, here's an HDR panorama of one of the new bedrooms, shot with a 5DIII + 24L II.  I believe there were a total of 12 frames - 4 sets of 3 frames (-2.3, 0, +2.3) converted into 4 32-bit tiff files, then reprocessed in ACR and photomerged via PSCS6:

Very nice. Great use of HDR, not looking like something produced by Looney Tunes.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: 7D - Worth Buying ???
« on: April 24, 2013, 04:54:42 PM »
I upgraded from the 7D to the 6D. The 7D is still great, but I needed high ISO performance for events, and the 6D does not disappoint.  In low light, it basically becomes a 1 point AF DSLR, but that one point grabs focus like a tractor beam  ;D. For my style, FF is the way to go.

What about the AF ???

I have both a 7D and 6D.  The 7D autofocus is of course better, but I find the 6D AF good enough for 95% of the things I shoot.   That said, I don't do much wildlife or sports photography, mostly kids/family, landscapes and event photography.  The 6D AF is fine for almost everything except for fast and erratically moving subjects.

I just bought a 6D, keeping my 7D which I've used for a couple years.  I still love my 7D and will use it for rapid focus and extra reach.  I also think at 800 and under ISO the images are fine.  What I've found with the 6D (only a couple weeks use) is that the ISO performance is amazing.  At 6400 the noise is probably equivalent to 800 on the 7D, but the noise is not as unattractive - not sure what the difference is...

The 6D seems to produce a richer image color wise as well.

I love both cameras!

Canon General / Re: the rebate program... what a sham!
« on: April 24, 2013, 04:48:11 PM »
It's a stupid program.  Promotions should stimulate purchases, rather than anger customers.  I bought a 6D from B&H a week before the most recent rebates were announced...paid $1779 for the body, SDHC card, and camera case package.  I was not happy to hear a rebate program was coming.   But...under the new rebate program, the rest of you can buy the same package with Canon rebate for $1899 today.

I guess I'll try to buy when no rebate program is offered in the future.

Agree with the above.

HDR is simply a method to obtain more detail in shadow and highlight areas than a standard single exposure would allow.

For some reason, along the way, it's been hijacked to create hideous cartoon-like pictures that bear no resemblance to a photo.

Wow, John, you nailed that one.  What's the megadata for that photo?
Thanks.  7D, 70-300f/4-5.6 L lens, 1/640th sec, f/5.6, ISO 100

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Just bought a 6D
« on: April 04, 2013, 04:36:05 PM »
I've been using my 7D for a couple years, but have been dying to get a full frame for a while.  I debated selling the 7D and getting a 5DIII, but decided to keep the 7D and pick up a 6D.  I can use them both with my 24-105L and 70-300L lenses.  I love the reach and speed of the 7D for birds/sports.

On my 7D I've used auto ISO with a maximum of 800.  What would you suggest is a comparable maximum ISO for the 6D?

Thanks.

At least it appears the confusion of the T3 and T3i combo of a couple years ago is no longer in Canon's marketing arsenal.  Unless someone has heard of the brand new T5 about to be introduced?
