If you want my true answer I would say RTFM! It is explained in detail which possibilities you have for HDR and how to set them. Really only takes less then 5 minutes to find it using the index. That's what manuals are for!

But to help you a bit:
1) You can set the picture style to HDR, in which case your camera will merge the pictures for you and create a jpg
2) You can use standard bracket shots. In any mode press the Q button on the right of your screen to bring up the quick settings menu of your camera (must not be in auto mode). Use the small dial or joystick to navigate to the EV settings slider. Now turn the big dial on the back of your camera e voila! Now you have 3 indicators instead of one! If you turn the dial more they more further apart. This way you can set the exposure values for the 3 shots your camera is going to take. If you press your shutter button now, your camera should take the 3 pictures automatically. This way it will just save 3 separate images. One under exposed, one normal and one over exposed. You can use these with photomatrix.

Just read the manual and experiment. Easy to find, easy to do. Good luck!
Hi folks,

I would like to pay with HDR, but not sure where to start.

For instance, how do you set the camera to do this?  I found how to set it to shoot HDR, it brackets 3 images and spits out a jpg.  Is there a way to do this without it spitting out the jpg it puts together?

How do ya'll set the camera to take your HDR series of images?  Any links to a tutorial on this for the Canon 5D3?

Also, for PP....do most of ya'll use Photomatix? Anyone use the open source Luminance (http://qtpfsgui.sourceforge.net/) program I've found.

Or, so most of you do it with Photoshop or GIMP?  I'd seen one youtube video that seemed to get the most out of an HDR shot...using Photoshop where they could use masks to paint in/out the best parts of each images exposure with layers.

I don't know how to use layers much yet, but sure did look interesting. Anyone know of any good links to tutorials on trying this?

Anyway, just wanting to find solid info on how most of you shoot your bracketed exposures...and your workflows for processing using plugins or real image manipulator applications....

Thanks in advance,

cayenne

Lenses / Re: Which extender is best
« on: November 13, 2012, 08:11:12 AM »
At this moment I will probably only be using it on my 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM.
Well since Canon doubled their prices, it's not interesting anymore to stick to that.
The Kenko ones on the other hand are much cheaper! And if they deliver the same results, I can do the math...

In my country (Netherlands) I get these TC's for these prices (converted to USD):
Canon EF 1.4x III Extender for 607,00 USD
Kenko PRO 300 DGX 1.4x for 290,00 USD

Canon EF 2.0x III Extender for 619,00 USD
Kenko PRO 300 DGX 2.0x for 315,00 USD

In both cases it would save me 300+ USD if I would buy the Kenko TC's....

Lenses / Which extender is best
« on: November 13, 2012, 03:19:29 AM »
Hi all,

When I am fotographing, I sometimes need a focal lenght beyond the focal length of the lenses that I own.
Because the lenses nowadays are not getting much cheaper, buying for example a 400mm lens is not funny!
Therefor, as I am usually shooting during daytime in well lit environments, I would like to buy a zoom extender (TC). That way, I can keep using the lenses I already own without having to buy new ones for those rare occassions where I need them.

It so happens that both Canon, Sigma and Kenko sell teleconverters, but I find it hard to pick one.
Therefor my question "Which one would you pick and why?".
Shooting all kinds of subjects, so no particular purpose for the TC other then  "just extending" :).
I am curious about the results!

EOS Bodies / Re: Shot wedding with 5DIII, dissapointed in AF
« on: June 21, 2012, 06:04:01 PM »
I got mixed results as well, but in think that has more to do with me struggling with the settings.
Compared to my old camera (400D) the 5d3 has lots and lots of options that can be altered to adjust the AF system. Still figuring out how everything works.
I am not up for doing wedding photography yet, but working hard on improving my skills. Practicing on concert photography mostly at the moment.
What I do miss though is the AF point being visible in the VF after focussing, but it depends on the program you are using.
Anyone got some tips for the AF settings? Like whether to use the full 61 AF points, or just go for center with expanding points etc.
Would love to hear what the pro's have to say about this :)

Technical Support / Re: Eos Utility camera not recognized
« on: June 16, 2012, 03:30:21 AM »
Have you installed the EOS Utility BEFORE you connected your camera to you computer?
If you did not, then it's your own fault. With USB devices, ALWAYS install software first, then connect devices.
When you connected your camera to your computer before you actually installed the software, Windows could not find a driver and probably marked your camera as Unknown Device in the Windows Device manager.
Google a bit to find out how to remove the Unknown Devices from the Device Manager, if applicable...
Also, you didn't actually try to connect your camera to a USB 1.1 port did you? Only USB2.0 and upwards is supported. See the system requirements of the utility for that.

Got a 5D3 for some time now. Only thing I can say WOW! Never had such good pictures with any other camera I had.

[little off-topic mode]
I love to browse this forum for information and other things. But what starts to bother me a bit is the amount of people who start a new topic, with the intention to let other people (yet again) say the 5D3 is not as good as they say. Why not join the 1001 other topics asking the same??? You don't even need the search function to find them...

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Rebates & BG-E11 Shipping Updates
« on: June 05, 2012, 07:28:24 AM »
Unfortunatly they don't seem to have this rebate program here in the Netherlands. Bought my 5D3 like 1,5 month ago, together with the 24-105 f/4 lens.
I wonder when Dutch companies will have the BG-E11 on stock and start shipping...who knows..

Try using a pre-flash to determine exposure when using your 580's in a dark(er) environment. If you have the 5D3 it can be triggered using the M.fn button (next to you firing button). It causes your flash to fire while your camera records over- or underexposure when actually flashing. It adjusts it's settings and fixes them for the upcomming shot (indicated by the * you see in your viewfinder's display).

Edit: Small question. You flashing straight towards your "object", or have you tilted/rotated your flash aiming somewhat towards the ceiling? If tilted upwards, you using the flash's white bounce card?

I am looking for a good ettl wireless trigger system foor my 5d3 too. It appears that not all of them are as reliable as they say they are.
From what I have heard is that the "Pixel E-TTL Trigger Set Knight TR-332 for Canon" does a nice job, and it supports HSS for shutter speeds < 1/200.
I have no hands-on experience with it though....

These XO skins do look nice. I have been looking for some decent protectors myself, but ended up with a protector that doesn't fight. Website says it's compatible with the Mk3, but the product package says 5D/5D-II. When holding the protector next to the LCD you can clearly see it's way too small.
Unfortunatly I do not have a creditcard and can't buy XO skins as they do not sell them in my country. Seems they are the only one with a screenprotector for the Mk3.... :(

Lighting / Re: Pixel Knight TR-332TX issues on the 5D Mark III
« on: April 06, 2012, 10:16:55 AM »
The quick flashing you described happend to me as well when I pressed the AF button on the back of the camera while the 580 was mounted directly on the hotshoe of the body.

Is it possible to turn it off by changing to AF-assist off?
I am not shure if it is the AF assist. For as far as I know that's the red light coming from the camera when AF'ing. When using the normal trigger button to take a picture the quick flashing doesn't happen, only when pressing the AF button on the back of the camera.
I don't have a flash yet so I can't try...

It's not your trigger system, it's the 5D3. This happens with a 580EX II directly on the body as well!

Really? Has anybody else encountered issues with their 580EX and 580EX II with 5D3?
It just happens to be that I tested my 5d3 with a 580exII at a friends house last tuesday. I don't have my own flash yet, as I need to save a bit more money to buy one!

Lighting / Re: 600EX-RT
« on: April 04, 2012, 11:01:20 AM »
If I am not mistaking the EOS 5D3 has an integrated wireless module to trigger remote 600EX-RT flashes.
Can anyone confirm this and is there someone who has tested this functionality?

Sorry, but you are mistaken - the 5DIII does not have the ability to directly trigger flashes wirelessly.
Ok lol, seriously thought it had :)
I read on this forum that some people report incompatibility for some wireless trigger systems. When I am a bit more experienced I would like to buy myself a brand new flash unit and a RF remote trigger system. At first I was thinking about the 580EX II, but on the other hand why take an older model is a newer more ruggedized and better model is available in the form of the 600EX-RT!
Does anyone have compatibility experience with a 5D3 and the 600EX-RT flash using a remote RF trigger system? I know there are lots of brands who sell these systems, but I would like to buy a systems that works well with the 5d3 and 600ex and fits within my limited budget :D
