Lenses / Re: Introducing the Canon EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS II

So this lens can use the 1.4 and 2.0 TC?

I hope so, but the 70-300 L does not. I was interested in that a couple of years ago, but ended up with the 70-200 f/2.8 L II. I purchased a 1.4 extender and they did not play well together. It was a long story, but I sent the extender back.

Hopefully they will be available from CPS soon to borrow and try.

If its about bag space and weight just get a teleconverter for the 70-200. Honestly for wildlife I would rather just use the 70-200 and crop than use the 100-400. The Tammy does well focusing in my experience.

I tried the 7D / 70-200 f2.8 IS II / 2X III combination. Intitial shots showed severe Front Focus Issues, so I exchanged that extender for another. I really wanted this combination to work for me, so I tackled lens Microadjustment. What I discovered was that at 400mm, the setup was fairly accurate, (although also somewhat inconsistant) with little or no adjustment needed, but at 200mm I needed to adjust focusing to +12 on the -20 to +20 scale. I decided this was not going to work for me, so I returned the second extender.

The reason I purchased the 70-200 in the first place over the 100-400, was I felt I could use the 2X extender to get to 400mm. Eventually I will probably end up getting a 100-400.

I use 1 1/8" I.D. Pipe Insulation around the legs of my Manfrotto tripod for cushioning while carrying on my shoulder.

This is probably a stupid question but I'll ask anyway - is this for photo, video, or both?

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 7D Replacement Coming for CP+? [CR1]

Long time lurker here, first time poster...
I'd add to jrista's observations that the implementation of CFast here is probably not for burst rates anymore, but more for video.  As a current 7D owner, and a user of MagicLantern (or whatever it is now... TragicLantern maybe?), the card write speeds are far too slow for RAW video and generally pretty iffy for higher-bitrate H.264, so any card write speed improvements would probably be for video, not photos.  Even the 1DX has a buffer that will eventually fill up, and if Canon would try to design any camera to be able to sustain a burst, I'd expect them to work on the 1D series.  I certainly wouldn't say no to a sustained burst on a new 7D though!

I think you need to start posting, as you seem to know what you are talking about.  We can all benefit from your knowledge.

I am hoping the 7D2 is to the 7D, as the 5D3 was to the 5D2 and is compelling enough to make me want to upgrade. I am specifically looking and hoping for a sizable improvements in DN, High ISO Performance and the 5D3 AF system or similar.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 5D Mark III & Third Party Batteries
« on: December 12, 2013, 09:52:12 PM »
If Im going to purchase a $2000-$3000 camera Im certainly not going to compromise it with a third party battery that Im not sure how it was made and to what standard. Ive seen what batteries can do if they have a thermal runaway (as poorly made Lithium Ion batteries can do) and its not pleasant.
I recently bought a Canon battery for my 6d (which I could have bought cheaper on-line) for £ 40.00 ($65) in my local camera store, on Amazon I could get third party as low as £ 10.00 ($16) but for such a vast difference you know corners have been cut.

A very good point. I'm sure third party batteries that damaged a camera under warranty would void the warranty.

The third party manufacturer's reverse engineer their stuff to work with Canon's equipment. IMO, it's not up to Canon keep the third party guys happy. I've got nothing someone trying to save a few dollars, but you're taking a chance.

After buying several tripods priced from the $200 to $800 range I find my go-to tripod is the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs. They are light weight very ridged and very versatile. I recommend you look at its features.

Agree on the 055CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber Tripod Legs. Also had the non-CF (055XPRO3) version for a while - both very sturdy and durable for a reasonable (relatively speeking) price. The drawback for me is it's too short (I'm almost 6'-2) and it's hard to justify buying a Gitzo being a hobbiest.
