Software & Accessories / Re: Good Camera Backpack for 5D Mark 2 &...
« on: August 21, 2012, 11:05:24 PM »
Hi All, thanks for all your helpful responses...I actually just made a purpose last week...before most of your recommendations.  I wished I saw/read some of ur posts (especially w/the f-stop backpacks) before I went with the Lowepro Flipside Sport 15L AW Camera Backpack.  I just got it today and haven't used it yet.  I did put my gears in there:

1) griped 5D mark II w/the 70-200 2.8 attached
2) 24-105
3) 50 1.8 II
4) speedlite 430EX
5) space for one more lens
6) batteries
7) battery charger
8) tripod on the side

Although I wished it would have a few more small pockets in there for small personal items, I think I'll enjoy this backpack...for now.  I'll probably look for another bigger one in a year.  Thanks again everyone!!!

Lenses / NEED HELP!!! 70-200 F/2.8L IS II USM vs. 70-200 F/4L IS USM
« on: August 18, 2012, 10:37:18 AM »
Ok fellow Photogs,

I know someone just posted a very similar post but he was comparing the f/4 IS w/the f/2.8 non IS.
Canon's having another rebate and I just purchased the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II USM for $2200.  However reading some of the posts from the other similar question, I'm starting to think, should I return the 2.8 IS II & get the f/4 IS for a $1,000 less and use that to get my next desired lens, the 35mm f/1.4 selling for $1329 now at B & H. (total of these latter 2 options will be $2528, which is only $328 more than what I paid for the f/2.8 but at least w/this option, I have 2 lenses.

Now, I shoot w/the 5D Mark 2 w/grip and have the speedlite 430EX.  I also currently have the 24-105L and 50 f/1.8 II.  I do not shoot action, no sports, etc.  I do portraitures, scenery, vacations, indoors, and assist w/weddings here and there.  What's the better option for me:

1) stick w/the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II or
2) go w/the 70-200 f/4 IS & 35 mm f/1.4 (or something else/a prime you would recommend in this price range for what I'm shooting).

Please share you valuable insights
Thanks a lot!!

Hi All,

I know this is not the forum dedicated for this type of post (sorry), but I figured this is the forum with the most visits and posts, thus I'll likely get the most feed backs.  I'd like to know what's a good camera backpack you would recommend for light/semi-light travel (mostly walking around the city, & vacations) to fit these gears:

1) Canon 5D Mark II w/grip
2) 70-200 f/2.8 II
3) 24-105 f/4
4) 35 f/1.4
5) Speedlite 430EX II
6) spare batteries

Thanks again!

6) battery charger

So wait guys, is the
B+W 77 XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M Filter
"I am thinking about buying that lens in a few months. I always use b+w filters on everything. For the 70-200, I would think a regular F-Pro mount B+W wouldnt cause vignetting. I have never used that lens though. The F-pro mount is 5mm thick I believe."

the same?  Will I have vignetting problems w/the B+W 77 XS-Pro UV MRC-Nano 010M Filter?  Please advise...I'm about in put in an order.  Thanks!!

Sorry...purpose basically is for:  Front element protection & Polarizing the incoming light...but mainly for Front element protection w/o degrading much of the quality.  Thanks.

Hi folks,

I just wanted to know if it's me or B&H has started charging for their UPS ground method of delivery to NY/NJ area?  I could've sworn I recall my last two purchases back in March and April and shipping was for free, but now shipping is being charged.  Any thoughts/inputs?  Thanks.

Lenses / Your 70-200 f/2.8L IS II...
« on: July 28, 2012, 01:05:18 PM »
Hi All,

I'm looking to purchase the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II as my next lens within the next couple of months and want to do some research and get some insights/inputs from users of this lens.  This is rather a pricey lens, so I would like to know as much as possible (practical 1st-hand usage rather than charts) about it prior to purchase.  I use a 5D Mark II.

I'd like to know:

1) what you love about this lens?
2) what don't you like about this lens?
3) How many times did you return it before you get the right copy (I've heard the 24-70 is known to go through many returns before photogs are happy w/theirs, so I'd like to know if this is the case for the 70-200 f/2.8 as well)?
4) what price did you purchase your's for?  what's a good price to get in now as it seems prices of lenses have gone up lately?
5) anything else you'd like to add...?

Thank you so very much for all your help!!!
I'm so excited and looking forward to this lens.

Hi All,

I was wondering if any of you have any experiences or suggestions on which lenses to use for shooting bands while they perform mini performances (mostly indoors).  I never shot in this situation.  Quite frankly I really don't have much shooting experiences.  I've shot in baby showers, a couple of weddings (but not as the paid prof, rather as an 'unofficial' assistant as I'm the friend of the BG), and informal events.  But recently I've been approach to assist in shooting a friend's band (might not be a one time thing).  Thanks for your advice in advance.  Thanks!

MODIFIED:  I apologize for failing to state I have a 5D Mark II and have only 2 lenses: 24-105L & 50 1.8 II.  I am thinking on getting a new lens, thus asking for suggestions.

Dear All,

Thanks for all your helpful and very insightful input.  At the end of the day, I decided not to rent a lens.  The wedding was this past Saturday and I ended up assisting shooting the whole day.  I shot solo from 7:30 to 11:00 until the paid pro arrived.  When he did, I introduced myself and told him I was a friend that will assist in shooting; he was very kind and professional about it.  I made sure and did the best I can to stay out of his way.  I basically shot at angels and spots he was not shooting from.  The church as a bit dim for my 24-105 (my 430 flash wasn't too helpful for the a dim church with pointed high ceilings).  Looking back, I was happy with the overall experience given this was my first full shoot, albeit on the unofficial assisting level.  However, if I could I would probably wish I had at least 2 more lenses at my disposal: 35L & 85L or 70-200 2.8.  I did learn so much though, especially looking at my shots and realizing what I should've done and not done on some of them.  Thanks again for all your help!

Hi All,

I'll 'unofficially' assist in shooting a wedding for a friend.  They will have a paid-hired pro shooter at the wedding (from 1pm to end of reception, likely 11pm).   However, the pro will not be there from 8:30am  to 1:00
pm, so I will shoot, probably solo during this time (make ups, dress, getting ready period).  I've done this once before a couple years back with a Rebel & CF lens.  Currently I shoot w/a 5D Mark II and have 2 lenses: 24-105L & 50 f/1.8 II (just upgrade to the Mark II w/24-105 as kits lens 3 months ago).

My question is, SHOULD I RENT A LENS?  If so, WHICH LENS should I rent?

Your input is much appreciated.  Thanks!

Lenses / Is there a best time to buy new lenses...?
« on: June 30, 2012, 01:02:37 PM »
Hi All,

I'd like to know if there's a particular time of the year to buy lenses for the best price (aside from ocassional rebates)?  E.g.  Does lens prices normally stay the same throughout the year of dip during particular parts of the year, say Black Friday, around Christmas time, etc.?

I wanted to know if it's practical to time my next purchase, very likely the 70-200 f/2.8L IS II USM, or 35 f/1.4L.

Thanks for your input!
