EOS Bodies / Re: High Megapixel Camera Coming in 2015 [CR3]
« on: December 19, 2014, 07:33:49 AM »

You have made a good point about the 5DIII birthday.  I was surprised when Canon came up with the 7D2 without a significant sensor jump.  However with Lexar making their 2000X SD cards UH3, perhaps in the next year (or 2), Canon may feel that it is time to have a high MP sensor with dual processors to give a 6FPS rate.

Highly doubt you'll see much more than 4 FPS from any cameras wielding the next gen of high MP sensors in the near future.  The Sony rumor is a 46 MP sensor is coming, and their folks aren't expecting a high frame rate at first either.

I think the cadence would be:

2015 -- High MP FF rig with modest frame rate, say 4 FPS
2016 -- Same sensor with a souped up processor / buffer / card throughput and (what) 6-8 fps?

The missing bit for me is what Canon will do with another FF rig due for an upgrade -- the 1DX.  It was supposed to be the merging of the studio 1Ds line and the sports/wildlife 1D4 line, and it was decent at that task.  I say decent in that it's a stellar camera, but each camp had one hand behind it's back -- studio/landscape wanted more resolution and sports wanted APS-H reach.

But now, a new 50 MP FF rig cannot possibly push out anything near the 12-14 fps the 1DX can now (not at full res at least).  So Canon is stuck with a difficult choice here:

  • Split the 1DX back into its two camps and offer two new 1D bodies: one that is high res / low FPS for studio or landscape work and another with a different lower-res sensor that maintains a high burst for sports/wildlife
  • Only offer a studio/landscape high MP body and tell sports/wildlife guys to keep using their 1DX's (or possibly their 7D2's) until throughput improves down the road
  • Pull a 'sort-of-Nikon' and offer one body that is full res for studio/landscape but at the flick of a switch is a some-sort-of-crop high FPS beast.  APS-H fanboys can stop spooning with their 1D4's at night and move on with their lives.

All of those decisions have tradeoffs.  Not sure which is best.

+1 Great points ahsanford!!! I think spitting the 1 DX into two camps is the way to go.... A 6-8 fps in a 50 mp body would be outstanding but I'll settle for 4 fps.  :) :) :) :) :) :)

The 5DIII will be 3 years old in March next year. A move to 50MP will pretty much follow Moor´s law. That same law should indicate just over a doubling of its computing power and given the speed of new memory cards, we should a least expect a camera that could chew 50MP at a slightly higher speed than the 5DIII and thus see at least 6, probably 8 fps.

As for AF system, there is no reason not to expect something beyond what the 7DII have. And I don´t see why we should´t expect more intelligence and speed in the processing part of it. More AF points, better tracking, better coverage of the image area etc.

The big questions for me though are what we will see in terms of DR, noise and ISO performance. A 5DIII just ramped up to 50MP and the rest same same ... Not tempting enough.

EOS Bodies / Re: Sony Sensors Coming to Canon DSLRs? [CR1]
« on: December 16, 2014, 06:22:38 AM »
no just no i rather Canon make their own Sony equivalent sensor and then Sony will have to make something better and so on competition will make a better sensor then even what Sony has now. I can not see why Canon one of the companies with the most patents can't come up with something better then their current sensors, only thing i can think of is the cost of development/production.

Would i buy a 5D4 with a Sony sensor? hell yea i don't give a crap about brands, product has to be good that's all that matters.

PowerShot Cameras / Re: Canon to Target The GH4 With New DSLR Type? [CR2]

wake me up when there is an innovative 5D4, or 1DXII.  Please make it mainly for stills with only a few more mp's.  News from Canon has been a sleeper for so long now, it is like a drought.

I am guessing this will be priced to match the $70,000 cinema 50-1000 lens.  Or in other words, not for us mere mortals.

Oooo ooooh a CR2 rumor for the 100-400L MkII.  Where have I seen one of those before?  Oh, yes...it was way back in October, 2010

In the meantime, I've missed so many shots like this:

Cute :)

EOS Bodies / Re: 4K Products Coming From Canon [CR2]
« on: October 24, 2014, 11:48:03 AM »
Well, the frequency with which Canon customers or potential customers complain about Canon "crippling" or otherwise shortchanging their products is a clear indication that they want more for every dollar. Canon hasn't thus far been willing to respond to all those demands for more/dollar...until they do, your going to keep hearing people complain.

It's become a simple fact that you can often get a LOT more value with other brands than with Canon. That's not to say that Canon doesn't make a good product...but their products are increasingly not providing what their customers demand. Some simply jump to another brand or add another brand to their kit. Others complain. Hopefully Canon will change in 2015 and actually start delivering.

Those are the ones Canon will actually listen to.  Canon listens to dollars, no vents :-)

Which is why I'll be spending money on Sony next year and not Canon. Voting with my feet and/or wallet. Had enough of being jerked around by Canon.

Well if you're already waiting for next year anyway, why not afford Canon the chance to show their cards if this CR2 pans out?  Ya never know. They won't stay behind forever. I'm not saying it will deliver everything per se, but if you're already heavily invested in Canon glass, why not sit tight on making a decision for something you don't plan to do til next year anyway?

And that's exactly the outcome the planned release of rumors like this aim to achieve. (Which is to say that I don't believe that all rumors are leaked and that a good portion of them are marketing, sometimes even defensive marketing.)

The real point here is I don't need to wait for Canon to show their cards - I know what Canon will do simply by looking at what they've done in the past: the minimum required so that they can entice me into buying the next model with a fuller feature set. I'm sick of being treated like a dumb and ignorant consumer by Canon.

I'm sure that Sony will bring newer models to market in 2015 and that they'll be streets ahead of whatever Canon debuts with. Canon is playing catch up. Why would I want to continue buying into a company that believes that "catch up" is "good enough"?

To answer your question, with another question: Is this rumor enough to stop me from buying Sony? Nope.
Dilbert I bought some great glass from a gentleman who jumped ship and went to Sony a few years ago ... I may be following him this Canon catch up game is getting old... You can fool some of the people some of the time but you can't fool all the people all of the time :)

Street & City / Re: State Fairs
« on: October 22, 2014, 05:21:39 PM »
I went to the NC State Fair last night to get some photos of the rides and sights.  I was able to go alone this year, the rest of the family would rather be going on the rides, rather than stand by the side and wait for one to start moving to get a neat picture.  Silly people.

All of the ride shots were made with an old Vivitar 17mm f/3.5 lens on a Canon 5D3.

Anyway, here were some of my favorites:

I do not thing it will be easy to resolve.  There are a few issues that will keep this alive until Canon beats all other sensors or joins them.  I do not think that Canon will go out of business.  They will swallow their pride and put a Sony Sensor in a DSLR before Canon will go bankrupt.

  • Human Nature people hate admitting their wrong.
  • Pig headed stubbornness of people that cannot see another point of view.
  • The people that are never satisfied no matter how good their gear is.
  • Trolls Trolls TROLLS will you stop feeding the TROLLS ALREADY.
The above list will be complaining about something until the end of all internet forums.

I wish that DR did not bleed into other discussion and ruin them. The 7D II discussions for example.

I am pragmatically in the more DR camp.   The real issue is the read noise.  DR was not something I ever noticed until I bought my Nex6 but the read noise is much more noticeable.

I cannot use my Sony for what I do with my Canon cameras.  I cannot use my 6D or 60D for what I do with my Nex6.  I am not going to drop all my Canon gear and buy a Nikon the ergonomics are a crime against humanity.

Lets face it a Sony Camera  + Meta-bones adapters really means who needs auto focus.  Because it is so slow you will be manual focusing most of the time.  That is what I like about the Nex6 it forces my to slow down and compose my shot.  But that is not for everyone.
