The 5D3 is a joy. You will love it! Running searches on the Forum helped me enormously when crawling up the learning curve on this camera.

I had my 40D converted by LifePixel - they are great! One thing I ran up against pretty quickly, tho, is that a lot of lenses, in particular the 16-35 I was hoping to use for landscapes, have a nasty PITA "hot spot" of reduced exposure in the center of every shot [due to the way IR reflects inside the optics]. I'm currently looking at the Sigma 15mm to use on WA shots, since it is reportedly better. It would pay to research your current lenses before you commit to IR.

I stuck with Canon batterie$$ until the warranty ran out on my 5D3, now I use Wasabi also. Used them for years in my 40D w/o a problem.

24-105 works for me. Small + unobtrusive, IS, sharp, and versatile zoom range for the street. The 5D3 has plenty of high-iso chops to make up for the lens speed. Below are @ 12,800:

If you go to the Canon site for the 5D3: http://usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/slr_cameras/eos_5d_mark_iii#DriversAndSoftware you will see that you can select your OS. The latest Mac OS that they list for their 1.1.3 firmware is Lion, but I believe it should install fine with Mountain Lion.

Obviously we are having a transcription error here - Canon isn't merging with Nikon, they are merging with Nike! They will be announcing the world's first 22 fps basketball shoes.

I found that a lot depends on what you do with the SD card. I use the 1000X Lexar, too, but take my SD out completely for the fastest bursts. Writing to the SD slows everything down dramatically.

All good advice. I would add that maintaining a keen awareness of the presence of folks who may take a physical level of offense at your activities [as in gangsta types and wannabes, and big, mean drunks] is essential. And anything involving kids. I had a gun pulled on me many years ago, by a small-time punk, while I was unknowingly taking pictures of his kids, so it can get worse than a beating.
