Now will one do the same with the $2300 14L II f2.8 prime if the f/2.8 zoom existed... I don't really know.

Well yes ... that's a fair question and I didn't think of that. Given a choice, unless the IQ was way short, I would go for the zoom.

The only lens cap that you can take pictures with ;) very friendly to carry around with DSLR

Yeah ... I hope the images with the lens cap doesn't have a light leak issue ;D

Canon may not be in any rush to introduce 14-24mm quickly in spite of all the hype in the rumor circuit...if it comes at all, it would be a pleasant surprise for those who are waiting....and not an expected obligatory move from Canon. In fact, some sober thought would suggest the wait is likely to be longer.

Why?

1) A minor issue is that there is no such thing as a "perfect" UWA zoom; the UWA designs are typically a jumble of compromises... and there *will be* no such perfection in the new Canon designs over and above the current UWA offerings. They may get it to be marginally better but they will face the same corner issues and will have to make compromises on distortion and vignetting and perhaps curved focal planes. So they won't be in a hurry to introduce yet another UWA zoom that comes up short…as it invariably will be given the high expectations.

2) Second problem is Canon's current line up on the WA and UWA end and its marketing strategy. The existence of a patent does not mean a product will be forthcoming soon.  They introduced relatively in quick succession  (not including the 17 TSE, and the 17-40L), the 16-35 II, and 14L II, and 24L II...and note all these are version II “updates”!  A high quality 14-24 zoom that goes across all these will be an issue. Especially with the 17-40 and relatively young 16-35II already in the lineup.

So yeah... sorry to rain on the parade, but I am just not convinced that 14-24 zoom is coming anytime soon. If it does, I will genuinely be happy for ya. :)

While I agree that the 14-24 may take some time to materialize, your first and second argument are contradictory. As per your own argument the 14-24 will be a compromise of sorts so the IQ of the primes will be better. Prime shooters will still go for the primes regardless of the existence of the 14-24.

If this were the case, the 24-70 II would cannibalize the sales of the 24, 35 and 50 Ls. Don't see that happening.

Thanks to everyone!

Given the +ve reaction to the 40mm, I'm tempted. Will try it out.

Did you apply any luminance noise correction in the lightroom shot? I'd like to know your post processing changes in each program. I'm also intrigued at the prospect of DPP possibly correcting noise better than LR.

Yes, the luminance noise reduction was applied in the LR shot (from the 7D). I mention the 7D because the the 5D3 shot of the ducks were also processed through LR (with NR applied).

I wanted to check out the 40mm (primarily because of its "chic" looks) but already have the 50mm f/1.4. Just wondering whether the 40mm does anything that the 50mm does not with respect to IQ?

What were the shooting conditions and what was the AF mode turned on in the camera? Check the settings for the Al Servo and whether it is on Focus priority. The shutter might not release till the AF locks on if that is the case.

Software & Accessories / Re: Manfrotto 055 vs 190, 498 vs 496
« on: January 10, 2013, 05:57:11 AM »
Hey folks, I'm in the market for a decent tripod without breaking the bank. Since I made the switch to full frame, everything is heavier and my old Manfrotto compact just doesn't cut it anymore. Now I have a few options in front of me: the 055XPROB vs the 190XPROB and the 498RC2 vs the 496RC2.

I am 5'10 and using a 5D Mark II with the 24-105mm being my heaviest lens. My biggest concern is how the heads will perform at 90 degrees sideways in portrait orientation. Are the extra 2kg of support of the 498 going to be beneficial for me and my 5D2 + 24-105 combo?

Both will be fine for 5D2 and the 24-105. The 190 will be almost half a kg less in weight and will be shorter (when folded) which will make a big difference if you need to go hiking with it.

Regarding the angle shift of almost 5 degrees on the 498 ball head, it will certainly be an issue. I didn't like the 5 degrees shift so I got a geared head.

This and many other features always get left on accidentally.  I always do it with the damn self timer.  Need it, set it camera goes into bag. An hour/day later bigfoot appears in front of you, you grab the camera and shoot! Damn it whats it doing?

That's why my C1 setting is always a tripod setup - timer, MLU, etc.

Good idea ... I think I'll do that too! Thanks Neuro

I checked out the RX100, and while it would seem that the image quality is great out of this thing, I wasn't too fond of the handling (felt very likely to slip out of my hands)

That's very true, the overall build is quite good but it feels extremely unsafe in the hands ... I never use it without the wrist strap.

I got myself the Sony RX100. A bit of a squeeze for the trouser pocket but then ... it shoots RAW and the IQ is pretty good
