I think it's perfect. I'm not fond of those overly misted out Big Stopper shots (even though I have a Big Stopper)

LR keeps choking on video files. They've always had bad support of video but this goes beyond. I'm frequently getting errors importing video now. My method is to import via LR - change the file name to an extended date, convert to DNG and backup original file to secondary location. Then I run a script which backs up the imported files to a server.

Guess what? It choked a video file, and messed up the backup copy. The backup copy should just be a copy, right? No, somehow Adobe managed to actually screw up the backup version. The file is clipped and messed up.

Fair warning, I've about had it with Adobe and all their products. LR is slow and now I'm sure I can't trust it. I'm even wondering if I made a mistake converting all my pictures to DNG - how many applications other than LR support it?

Anyhow I've rewritten my script to run the command line Adobe DNG converter for importing - keep LR out of the picture entirely. I rarely do a much editing on the computer, I'd rather be shooting.

Any other pure import options?

Puzzling, this S200 looks the same as the S100, yet it jumped by a full 100 model numbers from 100 to 200. Previously we went 90, 100, 110 ... something doesn't add up. What is this camera?

Third Party Manufacturers / Re: Fuji x100(s) to Supplement an SLR
« on: May 12, 2013, 07:14:36 AM »
I have the X100. The S is supposed to be faster but otherwise they are the same.

There are many goofy things about the camera, hardware and software. As others have said the mechanical dials, of which there are way too many (I only use two or three) get changed accidentally all the time. The battery compartments on the flash accessory are wrong, you have insert one of the batteries against opposite the way you would as indicated by the spring (which normally goes against the tail, not the head). This one is amazing, only on really cheap Chinese toys have I ever seen a lazy mistake like that.

Oftentimes the firmware gets into a state I have a hard time pulling it out. Like the flash mode, some times it's "commander mode" (what the hell is that) where it seems to have a mind of it's own, and not, but often I can't turn off commander mode. The camera actually locks up not too infrequently.

On and on, of course with my generation the AF sucks. However it may work out great for you. Ultimately it taught me to stick with Canon. Maybe a little more boring, but eminently sensible and it works. If they come out with a large format compact for $700 I'll be really happy.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Do you trust your camera?

5DmII.

I trust it to get a detailed image with good colors, because I force the colors on it by doing on location WB and post process camera color calibration. I partially trust its metering because it does a pretty OK job here usually, but I'll often shoot manual. I don't trust AF as half the time it will get it either wrong, or will just hunt for focus.

I think so, that is just for final packaging at the factor before they put it in a pouch. There's no way you can keep wrapping it up, the tissue wouldn't last.

I just put them back into the original soft lined cases they came with, or you can get one of the other suggestions here. I have the Lowepro which I like, but it is too bulky unfortunately for transport. Nice for field use however.

Digital rot is much faster on OS X than Windows. Apple gleefully obsoletes API's and releases code that breaks old applications. On the flip side PS is probably the most stable application on OS X as Apple probably tests it before release, and also tacitly supports is going forward.

PowerShot / Re: A New Large Sensor PowerShot Coming [CR1]
« on: May 08, 2013, 04:25:09 PM »
Well it's certainly not going to have interchangeable lenses (that would be the M series). This is their answer to the Sony large sensor compact. I'd buy one in a second probably, assuming it's got some AF speed like the S100.

CR1 so eh ... but it would fit their lineup pretty well. Of course Canon seems a little stretched right now with all their cameras but what do I know.

May have been mentioned already but Acorn for OS X might be adequate for photographers

I think most people on here are getting carried away and running with the sheep...

.. blah blah ..

PS is a pro application with pro prices... people seem to forget that, its not the go to app for any old john doe, it never has been its just been made available by piracy.

The definitions are meaningless, all that matters here is a company that has a business model and consumers that vote with their dollars. As I said earlier I'm the type of user that upgrades every other year, or every third year. Works fine for me with my usage, and Adobe got a nice little revenue stream from that. Then they went to a model where you have to upgrade every year. OK I stopped upgrading and considered next steps as they don't support my use case anymore. Now they even disallow using legacy software, you have to pay for use.

Fine, whatever, their call. Note that the only reason for doing this however is their own convienance in not having to maintain two code bases. It's certainly not a customer request because those who need CC had it, and those who didn't, don't. This will cut off the occasional users like me and open the door for competition. Might be a good strategy or might not.

I should mention, the point about piracy is also meaningless. I work on the other end of that which is preventing software piracy, and I can say that adding Cloud support doesn't magically make it harder to pirate.

OK so I determined that either Image Mechanic will do what I want, or it is possible to do it with some hand built stuff. Who knows maybe I'll write a nice little software around it and sell it.

Wouldn't have gone this far if Adobe hadn't pushed me. And this is the key, they're forcing customers to decide who is serious and who isn't, and I suspect they'll lose revenue from the not serious crowd.

They'll probably lose some amateurs at least. Under their old model I upgraded LR every year and PS every few years. Then they did the one time thing to PS6 which I missed out on, so I'm staying on PS5 (or 4?). Still works. But now with this I'm annoyed enough at LR that I'm ready to boot that too to find something faster. All I really care about is DNG, custom renaming on import and calibrations. Otherwise LR stinks - it's so slow I can't stand it sometimes. I wouldn't have bothered if it wasn't for this.

Actually what I'd really like now is a FW800 SD Card reader.

Why buy this old one when there is a new available for half the price? Metal and smaller too ...

"Delock" brand

I forgot where I bought mine (last year), but it was around $50 and I got two.

Edit: Oh yeah, here's where I got it

Works great. I have thunderbolt but this is a small handy one for when I'm traveling too.

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Re: Where is this new flash?
« on: May 06, 2013, 06:40:24 AM »
I'd Skip the PW.  Too many issues with a third party unit.  ...  Some have been waiting 7 years for a new 100-400L.  However, it currently had no real competition, its the best of its kind.

Agree with the 3rd party flash. I waited a few years hoping for the RT's and they did deliver, so I plunked down for three units plus the ST.

I'm one of those still waiting for the 100-400 though :) It's OK, no rush.
