Lenses / Re: Why do fast primes not have IS?
« on: June 25, 2014, 07:27:58 AM »
yes, agreed.  :)

I've sold my 2 "fast" primes [50/1.4, 100/2.0] recently and rely solely on my f/2.8 workhorse Zooms [17-55, 70-22 II].  Occasionally I do like the capability for shallow(er) DOF (on APS-C), but got sick and tired of the very high amounts of loCA (bokeh fringing; purple/green) of these old lens designs ... and am not prepared to shell out a grand or more for optically better fast primes [L].

Looks like Sigma will have to deal with AF reports first and check this before release of the 85mm f/1.4 Art. This is not good advertisement for Sigma and their products.
My 50mm f/1.4 Art does not have AF problems. I am extremely happy with my copy.

no one has problems with AF of this lens except the one that has a 1D series, like me

got my 50 Art two days ago...perfect with 50D a a pronunced FF with 1dmk3....solution....fine tune with the dock, now the focus is good with 1dmk3 and with in body regulation with 50D, now i get good results with both bodies

Yes, so was Eldar's and mine also, shoot another 4000 images in and out and see if it changes .

4k? too much  ;)

the focus is consistent tough

I have three batteries, just run through three batteries and you have shot 4000 images. Do half and you still be able to see the drift is there..

i will try with focal, but the beaviour of the lens seems normal with autofocus system of 1D series....also in lenstip.com review the lens was has pronunced FF with 1d series + inconsistency

dwhich kind of problems had with your 50 Art?

Adjusted with FoCal and plotted the numbers into the lens via the docking. It was flawless, absolutely spot on, FoCal showed 99,4% consistency with 30 shots, or better/same as the 24-70 and 200 f2. I loved it. But after a week it started to miss, a little or very badly, like 10 meters from subject. And it could be 5 metes behind, spot on and ten meters in front within three consecutive shots. Calibrated and adjusted new values, worked perfect again, for a while. And eventually I did t have more afma range to go to and it was all over, completely unstable and random.

seems a very bad problem...i will take more shots, for now i taken just 2 hundreds

Here's what I've been waiting for - a 50L to 50A comparison from SLR Lounge

I think it's enough to convince me to cancel my pre-order.  The Sigma is sharper, but not shockingly so, and the Canon's bokeh is slightly better (IMHO).  The Canon also appears to have ever-so-slightly better contrast, while the Sigma has better CA control, but again, only by a hair.

The other thing I've learned is that you'll have buy the USB dock to enable full time manual focus (which I guess isn't standard for Sigmas).  That's crappy.

The 50L has killer build quality and USM in a much smaller package and I don't think the Sigma is worth 950 of my dollars for such subtle differences at f/1.4 in what for me, is a portrait lens.

I guess I can't cancel it till the 24th, so I'll keep my mind open until then, but I think I'm going to cancel and resume the 50L II vigil ;)

This is exactly what I expected.  Sigma very slightly sharper, Canon better bokeh.

IMO no comparison if price not an issue, the Canon f/1.2L is the better lens.  Although I got my Canon for $1200 during the rebate season.

Reasons:

* Minimal difference in sharpness/CA
* Canon has better bokeh
* My bet is on Canon for faster autofocus
* Canon does f/1.2, sigma does not
* Canon is much smaller, and probably built better

you can take a look to a more scientific review

http://slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/1677/cat/30

the canon 1.2L is destroied on sharpness in the corners

Quote
The Sigma 50/1.4 Art's sharpness holds up very well against the sub-$2,000 competition, as well. At ƒ/1.4 and on a full-frame camera, it pretty well blows all of the others out of the water. The Canon 50/1.2L is pretty sharp in the center, but the corners are extremely soft.

there is no match between 50A and the rest of the bunch except the Zeiss Otus

slrgear consusions of the review:
The Sigma 50mm ƒ/1.4 Art is the most exciting lens we're likely to review this year. All competing lenses from Canon and Nikon fell short when compared to the resolving power of the 50mm Art. Compared to the mighty Zeiss 55mm ƒ/1.4 Otus, the Sigma holds its own, displaying nearly identical results! Even though it has a higher price than the standard 50/14 offerings from Canon and Nikon, this lens is easy to recommend. Put simply: it trounces any similar model available for less than $4,000. And since it comes in significantly cheaper than the best of Canon and Nikon, Sigma has made a friend of every full-frame shooter in the land.

for anyone interested in resolution at large apertures it's a must buy

the nexus 5 is worst than my lumia 1020 taking shots at any iso and the lumia 1020 is good considering it's a phone, but it isnt any better than a dslr like a canon 60D; post some samples

Am I the only one who is impressed (read: terrified) by the 2460 focusing points?

the 70d has 15 millions focus point more or less, so i am not impressed....2.4k looks ancient to me  ;)

the canon is a little better at 105@4, in the rest fo focal length/apertures is worst; midframe and corners sigma is overall better

Software & Accessories / Re: Photoshop CC & Lightroom 5 for $9.99/mth
« on: November 22, 2013, 11:43:17 AM »
it's a promotional price for the first year only.

in the terms of use conditions they say, that the renew will be automatical at the actual price of the Subscription.

i dont understand if you can cancel the Subscription at the end of the first year without incorring in penality
