EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Second body for safari
« on: July 20, 2013, 12:19:05 PM »
I am an enthousiastic hobby-photograher. I am going on safari in September and am looking for a second body.
I  have a 5Dm3 as primary camera and plan to take with me my 24-70 f2.8 ii, 70-200 f 2.8 ii and 300 f4. In addition to that, a 1.4 converter (iii). A large oart of the photography will be in low light and I understood from the camp that 300mm with 1.4 converter should offer enough reach (the latter of course especially on a crop body).
I was hoping that  the 7Dm2 would be available on time, but this is not the case.

I have been thinking about the following options:
- 7D, crop, eventually sell afterwards, eventually buy used
-70D, crop, newest technology, less weather/dust resistant, might be useful after the safari as well as relatively simple and small camera with fill-in flash and wifi
- 1Dm4, 1.3 crop, better image quality in low light, weather sealed

- or, the most expensive and probably most worryfree option, buy a 1Dx and eventually sell the 5Dm3 afterwards???

I would appreciate you advice.
Ben
And why exactly are you getting a 24-70 for a safari? Get a prime for landscapes. Choose the focal length of the prime appropriately.

If you have a FF, (as you do) get a crop camera to get you reach.

Animal Kingdom / Re: Show your Bird Portraits

Very nice Serendipity!  I wish we had some bulbuls here!  They almost seem like a cross between a cardinal and a wax wing..  Beautiful!
Red-whiskered Bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus) that visited our garden yesterday for just a few seconds, luckily I had the camera in hand.

Really nice shot of a beautiful bird. We have bulbuls here but they look somewhat different. Thanks for sharing. :)

edit: Here is what they look like in Hawaii.
Huh! Never thought of them like that! So when the rain abates and the clouds part (not the sea!!!) hopefully they will return to my garden...
Unless I move, I fear they will never be in my garden!   Looking again, perhaps they are even a Cardinal, Waxwing, Small Woodpeckerish looking creature... I do like them...  :)
Nope, bulbuls. Very different. Look at the beak.

From Wikipedia
Yes, agreed about the beak.  I almost didn't comment on it because of the beak but the facial markings are somewhat woodpeckerish, no?  It's a great bird, I wish we had them here!
True, but they don't peck wood here in India. I guess their food is in abundance outside tree trunks. They need to pick the worms out of the dirt. Hence long beaks. Cardinals seem to have beaks that are used to break seeds. Think about it - if you were a worm and the climate was dry, where would you go? To a place that was damp. So inside a trunk makes sense. Now somebody posted a picture of a woodpecker listening to sounds in a tree trunk. Sure, that is human imagination, but I am sure the bird could hear the worms.

 :)

OK, so replace "I am sure" with "I believe" :)

;D

And I thought I could boast of my FD lenses - but U da man!
No, you da man!
No! U da man!
OK, I da man ;)

i just popped in to see how this was going, and from what i can see the most entertaining aspect of this thread are the sweet "princess bride" lines. neuro, you are the man.

Agreed!
neuro is the man. As are so many others on this forum.

Why am I on this thread? Never mind!

I would not upgrade to a 5DIV. My second body will be a crop camera - possibly after 2 to 3 years. Replacement of the 5DIII will be much later. Even if the 5DIV had all those listed, I'd stay with my 5DIII.

I believe we are in the same boat.  It's a nice boat though.
My perspective is that I got myself a professional camera (now some of these 1D folks may object but I am "standing my ground" ;) technically I am sitting but wth!) and I am going to need that time to use all the features including the ones that ML unlocks! Dual ISO! Wow! Hmmmmm back to the topic - yes, it will take me time to accumulate the moolah to get to the next FF.  :)

Chuck Alaimo and captainkanji...really nice work guys! :)

Chuck, what lens and settings did you use to smooth out the water?
+1

Yes Chuck, captain, great pictures.

serendipity, I checked the EXIF. f/18 and 406.

How do you check the EXIF on that photo?

Installed it on chrome which is my default browser...

If you want to keep your EF-S lenses due to budget issues, you have the 700D, the 70D and even the 650D. I think we will hear about the 7D in a few months. Look at the specs and decide.

If you are ok to sell your current lenses, you do have the 6D and 5D3 options too. I waited for the 7D2 and gave up about 15 months back and got the 5D3. No regrets.

Actually I think if I had held off until now, I might have been tempted by the 70D and would have lined up for it...

« on: July 19, 2013, 10:59:04 PM »
Not shot with a 1dx but a war wound lol slipped and i fell knocking the 1dx into a rock my st-e3 took some scrapes too.

Mmmm, very suspicious Bornshooter, coming so soon after the Black Underwear shoot, in the Dark Back Streets of Glasgow, on the Slippery Rocks, with two Ladies in nothing but Black Underwear, plus there's the Black Underwear to consider, and other stuff, did I mention the Underwear ????.

Also the first Image of yours I've seen that's out of focus, poorly Lit, and doesn't have a Body to die for.

And before someone says it, I'm not dying for a 1Dx Body.
The problem was that there was just one set of underwear ;)

another attempt

I am guessing the image you wanted to share is this one:

To get it to show, click the insert image icon (the mona lisa - under the Bold button). It places img and /img tags surrounded with '[' and ']' and places the cursor in between them. Simply paste your flickr url there... Your URL is http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5344/9276643608_cb9e23f2b1_c.jpg.

BTW, nice picture.
