Great shot!  Which bridge were you on for the shot down the Allegheny?

I took some good shots from the West End Overlook a few years back.

Lenses / Re: Vignetting problem on 24-105mm
« on: April 30, 2012, 01:51:22 PM »
My copy exhibits a little bit more vignetting in the top left corner at 24 mm when it's wider than f5.6 or so, but nothing like this.  Looks like the hood is not clicked into the right position or you were using cokin filters and the filter holder was a little rotated.  If it's not the hood or a filter, I would definately send it in for repair.

EOS Bodies / 5D mk III Rate Button and Android
« on: April 26, 2012, 03:27:37 PM »
Does anyone have knowledge of an Android photo slideshow (or organization) app that will recognize photos that have been "rated" by the 5D III?

Here is the scenario...  Shooting weddings/events, I would like to be able to hit the rate button on the 5D to identify a limited number of good shots taken during the early parts of event.  At the reception, I would like to take the microSD card (in an adapter and recording JPEGs) out of the camera, insert it into my Transformer Prime Android tablet and quickly call up just those rated photos into a slideshow program to be displayed on the tablet for guests.  I have accomplished this in the past but it has required a laptop in the middle to sort the photos and write to a microSD card.  I would like to make this a seamless and quick move which should be able to be accomplished with the GREAT addition of the dual card slots!

I see a couple of ways to do this where the android photo app could read the rating and automatically sort the photos for view.  Another option would be an Android file browser that could recognize the rating and I could copy the files from the microSD card that have ratings to the tablet or a different directory and play from there.

Does anyone have experience trying to do this?

Thanks in advance!

EOS Bodies / Re: 5diii problem with touch wheel
« on: March 30, 2012, 01:16:46 PM »
I'm hoping that I'm just doing something wrong but I can't get the touch sensitive wheel to work in video mode. Silent control is turned on and I have tried in M and Av modes while recording video. I've tried touching every part of the wheel but nothing is changing. I'm really thinking there is a problem with the camera and wanted to see is anyone on here has any ideas????

Just called canon support. The manual is not very clear about this but you have to hit the Q button to get to the screen where the silent controls can be used during recording. I would feel stupid but the tech support guy said that they couldn't figure it out at the tech support enter either. Apparently they have gotten quite a few calls about this so hopefully this will help out a few folks!

BWT, my camera is supper sharp if I turn off all the in camera NR!!!

Tend to agree with the long term premise that Sony will be Canon's main competitor in the future.  Currently, they are second behind Canon in many markets.  They can't be too far off from overtaking Nikon in total camera sales.

But to say that the SLR will be gone within 12 months is a big call.  Then again, for 90%+ of photography, a mirrorless camera could perform as well as an SLR.  And most people that are buying their first DSLR would probably consider a mirrorless camera if they thought it was good enough.  My 12 month prediction is that we'll see a few more sub $1,000 DSLRs released this year. But after that, mirrorless cameras will own that market.  Canon will always have an entry level DSLR, but its sales and popularity will decrease over time.  However, DSLRs will own the over $1,000 category.

Agree with this.  DSLRs are here for a long time to come.  The low end market may move to mirrorless but you wont catch a serious sport photographer with a mirrorless camera and a 400mm lens anytime soon.  I certainly cant imagine shooting a wedding without the big viewfinder.  Sony has made strides in the electroic viewfinders but take one out in the cold for a winter shoot and you will quickly cry for your mirror back!

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Why 5DmkII file size varies so much....?

Check out wikipedia and the JPEG section.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG#JPEG_compression  you will get your math fill for a month!  Short story is that sharp and high contrast edges require a lot more space to render.

As a test, take a picture of a blank wall and another of a house plant.  The second should be much larger.  The more detail that is saved in the pic, the larger the file.

Exposure will also change the file size as parts of the image may blow out or be clipped in the dark regions and decrease the amount of overall detail in the image.

I'm in the same boat here with the desire to upgrade from a 50d to the 5diii.  I use my sigma 10-20 on a regular occasion and will really want something to replace that range at full frame.  Unfortunately, when you look at the comparesons, the image quality of the 16-35ii doesn't blow me away compared to the simga cropframer and the cost of the canon is nearly 4x!  Of course the f2.8 is nice ;-)

I've been looking at the sigma 12-24mm but the inability to use filters for landscape (particulary when including water) is a non-starter.  A polarizer and ND filter kit is an essential!

Ramon, I'm in the situation that is like your friend's. I am still planning to go 5d mkiii - it's the camera I will use for many years in the future, it's one hell of a camera (well, according to early reviews). The problem I face is that I'll have to adapt realizing that I will be carrying 4k$ worth of equipment around. I think that's the only trouble really. If he can afford it and feels comfortable carrying such expensive equipment around, he should definitely get it.

5d mk III >>> 30D

This is a very good point, but the recuring cost of an insurance policy should be considered as well.

Also, your friend should consider the potential cost of computer and storage upgrades that may be needed.  If he/she was processing 30d photos with a 3 or 4 year old computer, they aren't going to be very happy when it takes 30 seconds to load a single 5diii image!  Data storage/backup needs are going to go up by 3-4x too.
