Maybe Canon hired the same visually impaired person that stencils the names on the Nikon D800?

The 100L isn't a bad lens, but as far as being Canon's sharpest, it wouldn't make the top 5, and maybe not even the top 10...

I've had my D800E since the beginning of July, and here are a few unscientific observations I've made...

Dynamic Range - the 5D Mark III has a bit more dynamic range straight out of the camera, but the D800E files give you a whole lot more dynamic range to work with if you want to spend the extra time in post-processing.

Image Sharpness/Acuity - it's close, but I would give this one to the 5D Mark III if it were not for the lower pixel count;  the amount of fine detail sharpness and resolution is better in the Canon files, but the Nikon file has 28% more real estate which helps it when you make larger prints (24 x 36").  I really expected to see better sharpness with no AA filter in the D800E, and Canon seems to be getting better performance out of their lenses with the new lens correction profiles loaded into the 5D mark III, so this comparison might surprise a lot of people.

Focusing - the 5D mark III is vastly superior in AF speed and, more importantly, in accuracy.  The D800E isn't bad - it's about the same as the D700, but the Canon is in a different league altogether.

Metering - I would call it a draw... both cameras are pretty good, but neither one is perfect.

High ISO Noise - I have no idea - I normally shoot at ISO 100.

I just saw that Amazon has the 5D III selling for $3399 which is about $100 less than most reputable dealers.

Amazon is a reputable dealer.

Just make sure you're buying from Amazon, and not one of the grey-market dealers that sells through Amazon.

Nonsense. The best black frame / back of cap photographers do not need any lens to produce outstanding images with full 14 stops of DR.

Why would anyone be jealous of a camera that's not available to purchase because the manufacturer is scrambling to fix a list of defects as long as your arm?

Nikon is probably pushing to get the D600 to market as quickly as possible, since they can probably do that a lot quicker than they can fix all the QC defects and design flaws in the D800...

The variable aperture doesn't bother me, since I have a modern camera that maintains the set f/stop when I zoom, except of course for the rare times I'm shooting wide open.

I agree...

The current setup is a huge improvement over the old cameras - I hated the AF sensor marks that obscured the subject.

I know Canon has a bunch of lens deals going on right now, but to get the best bang you gotta buy a Mark II with them.  I'm getting the Mark III : /

Is there a time of year when the deals are the best and Canon lenses are at their least expensive?

Correction - had a bunch of lens deals.  The rebates ended yesterday.
