I do the same thing for the newspaper in the small town that I work in. Since my day job is a teacher at the high school it makes it very easy to cover sports. My usual set up for basketball is a 7d with a 16-35 f2.8 and a 1d mk2n with a 70-200 f2.8 non is. Obviously one is for when the action is on my side of the court an one for the far side.

Taking into consideration your budgetary canstraints I would recommend looking at getting the 70-200 F2.8 L (non IS). I use it with great results and you can pick one up in your price range. I know how the lighting in these gyms can suck as our gym is imo, one of the very worst when it comes to lighting. That being said, I can still shoot at 1/320, iso 800(on the mk2n), f2.8 and get shots that are more than good enough for print in the paper.

I've shot a number of times at San Francisco Giants games with no issues at all. In fact the last time I went I had a fairly good sized kit in my pack (2 bodies and 3 lenses). The security didn't bat an eye at me, all they wanted to make sure of is that I didn't have a weapon or alcohol in my bag.

I was also looking into going to the 49ers playoff game this weekend and the stadium information for Candlestick Park says cameras, still and video are ok as long as you don't bring in mono pods or tripods. It didn't say anything about specific types of cameras(interchangeable glass).

However, I did run into problems trying to get into a college football game (Fresno State) with my 7d+70-200mm. Seems like as soon as the security guard saw the white lens I was deemed a "no go". Even though the stadium rules that I checked prior said camera's were ok.

It's tough to say what's allowed and whats not. I'm starting to think that it may boil down to who the security guard is when you enter the stadium.

I recently picked up a refurb 5d mkII from Canon USA and upon opening the box I could not tell it from a brand new one. There wasn't a scratch or nick that I could find. Needless to say I was very pleased saving $500

As for shutter count, the file numbers were in the 4000's. I'm guessing they don't reset the file numbers when they do the repair so take that for what it's worth.

Always format your memory card before putting it into a new camera.  Otherwise the camera will pick the next sequential image number from what was on the card.  I formatted mine, and the first image was number one.

No I did, I always reformat each time I put a card into a body especially since I rotate between 3 bodies depending on what I'm photographing. But thanks for the tip nonetheless.

I love Yosemite, it's about the only thing that makes living in Fresno tolerable  ;)

Have you tried tonemapping this shot? With all the vibrant colors you can get some pretty cool results.

You do know that you can change the AI Servo speed on the 7D, right?

Yeah I know, and I didn't mean it to sound like it was light years faster but it's a noticeable "tick" quicker for me on moving subjects.

In many situations I couldnt agree more about the 1d. However my main stuff is sports and I couldnt imagine shooting it with anything else. I bought a 7d to replace my 1d mkIIn thinking that it would do the trick but I find myself still using the 1d to shoot the live action stuff like baseball. Even being a couple generations old I find the 1d in servo mode to be quicker and more accurate than my 7d with the same glass. Unfortunatly I see the market for the 1d shrinking down to guys like me who need the high frame rate. Other than that you can get by nicely with the 5d mkII.

Very nice shots of the subway! I own the mkII of this lense and to be honest I wasn't so sure I would use it as much as I have. Now it seems whenever I'm not shooting sports, this is the lense that's on my camera.

Again, well done.

My day job is a high school teacher, part of that job allows me to coach the golf teams. One of my former golfers is playing in college on scholarship and asked me to come shoot one of his matches.
