EOS Bodies / 5D3 HDR photos handheld in NYC
« on: April 27, 2012, 12:48:12 PM »
Playing with the built in HDR feature.  All shots were handheld, but I was anchored to something solid.  Used the in-camera jpeg HDR +-3EV processing and mild touch ups in LR4.1

Another vote for "less is more".  On Disney visits, I ONLY take 5d/24-70 with a black rapid type sling strap.  I would love to use a telephoto and wide angle lens for some shots, but not enough to justify the added load (lens changing, storage, weight, etc..) to my already full plate of managing the kids.  Do you want a perfect photo shoot or a happy Disney experience with the family?  8)

jpeg are mostly fine, but there are times when RAWs are just better. Either way, I believe you are better off with 80% of your focus on composition, good lighting, good story, etc..   RAW vs jpeg, Nikon vs Canon, crop vs FF, 5d2 vs 5d3, etc.. is mostly irrelevant.  my $.02  8)

Since there are discrepancies between the various advisories, we should ask Canon for clarification.

So Canon USA: Is there a fix? Will/Did you do anything to correct this for newer units?

I am not a professional and haven't reached the skillset required to take photos with my lens cap on, so I am sitting on the sideline and watching with amuse.

I am surprised how fast this firmware update came from time the camera was released.  Typically, they wait a little longer untill more serious issues are uncovered/addressed and to give their firmware release QC dept more testing time.  The Soma Island guy must have been very convincing  ;D

I just tried it on the 60D and it still works. Comes out to 714.20USD after tax & shipping. I'm in NY.

also the code NEW412 gives free shipping.

pdirestajr, how did you find out about these deals?

This reminds me a story from the Kodak Customer service unit after they released the Weekender Disposable Camera.  One of the funny but reoccurring customer calls they received were customers that were inquiring if they can use the weekenders camera during the week??  TRUE STORY!!

A wedding camera:  Seriously??

I thought I read somewhere that you can trigger the shutter remotely with the new 600EX/STE3 combo. For instance, with the ST-E3 mounted on the body, I believe you can trigger the shutter on the camera via radio with a 600EX. Can anyone confirm or refute this? I really like the Odins, but this feature would be a nice perk.

Actually don't have the STE3, but I have tried this with multiple 600EX-RT units, it works very well.  Not only does the trigger work consistently at a very distant range but the slave unit you are triggering from can  also flash for the exposure if it's part of the groups you have configured to fire.

One question that I had that I wanted someone with an STE3 to confirm is, can you really set second curtain sync on a remote flash triggered from the STE3 or is that incorrect in the documentation?

I just got my ST-E3 and the 600EX and the only 2 sync options are first curtain and HSS - NO second curtain option.

I have to say it's kind funny that I couldn't take photos inside a Photo store.

Ha ha... I hope you don't take same attitude of trying to do "the stores type of thing" in other types of shops like gun shops or sex shops :-)

LOL.  Are you saying your local gun shop doesn't let you fire a couple of rounds before your buy your pistol?  That's just not right!!  :D

I have never been inside a sex shop, so I don't know ;)

EOS Bodies / I am done with B&H
« on: April 12, 2012, 10:24:21 AM »
I purhcased most of camera gear from B&H untill I placed my preorder for 5D3 a day after it appeared on their website.  Communication was slow with no real answers from customer service and I would still be waiting for my camera if I stuck with them.

After someone posted on this website that Kenmore Camera in Washington had some stock of the body only package, I called them and I liked the family/small feel I got.  I placed me order and received confirmation and tracking number within the hour and my camera was in my hand 2 days later.  When I called B&H to cancel my order, the rep had a rude tone and asked me which camera store had stock as if he did not believe me.

Yesterday, I decided to buy the new canon 600Ex plus the Canon ST-E3-RT wireless commander, so I gave Kenmore Camera a call and they had both items - I asked them to match B&H pricing and they did.  The rep told me they're not big enough to match the free shipping, but I did not mind paying an extra $20 for shipping.  Anyway, I received my shipping notice within the hour and my stuff is on a UPS truck for delivery today.  B&H has the Canon ST-E3-RT listed as pre-order item!

I guess I am just venting about B&H and sharing my positive experiance with my new found camera store.  I am not affiliated nor getting anything from Kenmore Camera to write this.

Last week I was visting NYC and decided to visit B&H store for the first time and while I was impressed of how busy the store was, I sensed an unwelcoming attitude and one dude told me I couldn't take photos inside the store.  Maybe its just the normal tone of New Yorkers, but I have to say it's kind funny that I couldn't take photos inside a Photo store.

While I never say never, B&H is no longer my primary source of Photography gear.

I've gotten nasty looks during events for the sound of my shutter.

Sorry dude - nasty ladies will continue to give you nasty looks even with a whisper quite shutter - they're just doing their job - nothing personal  ;D

is basically a DNG converter within LR4

How do you know this?  I am not sure i follow.  I downloaded the windows version and it works just fine.

I just upgraded to the new 5D3 from a 7D and love it.  I had 50D, 60D, 7D and loved all of them as they took phenomenal quality photos.  I seriously would have been turned off if the 5D3 had a higher MP.  Its already a data nightmare to deal with 22MP RAWs - little alone 36MP.   I still would have bought the 5D3 if it had just 18 MP.  Just look at the success of Nikon 3Ds with 12MP.  If you want a wall sized prints, buy a medium format and SHUT IT!

You never hear high-end professionals whine about who has better camera.  its just a tool dude.  i am certain if you trade cameras with Joe McNally, he would still kick your butt.
