I am very happy with my 7D, thanks to the guys on this site that told me to just get it now instead of holding out for a MK XXX that's out 'real soon now'.
Best thing ever. I got it on sale just before the earthquake too.
I am very insterested to see what the 5D MK 3 brings to the table and might even get one eventually and keep my 7D as a 2nd body.
Nevertheless, get what you need now, electronics are always a crappy investment, there's always going to be 'the next great thing' coming out as soon as you get yours. As someone else said, as soon as the MK 3 in announced/available speculations about MK 4 will start.

Just thought I'd chip in with some worthless information.
Hot-swapping lenses is mostly electrically ok, not the safest way but shouldn't be the culprit. The connectors are protected. What I would worry about is how does the camera react to the change in focal length vs AF motor drive current.
Some of the AF motors require a slightly different power level, if the camera does not detect this properly when hot-swapping you may indeed burn out the AF motor or associated control electronics.
Sometimes I forget too, but then I just switch the camera off with the lens off and when attached I switch it back on.
This may or may not be the issue but I have seen this same thing with other 'hot-swappable' electronics when the current requirement changes between components.

I got a Kingston Ultimate 32GB 600x CF card for my 7D and couldn't be happier. The price/performance ratio is spot on. Costs about the same (or less) than the 16GB SanDisk version. I paid 130eur for mine (around 150-160USD).
I'm gonna get me some more of these babies.
Whether I need the speed or not is another question. I just like knowing the card has the performance when I do need it + I'm a tech geek in general.
I'm not going to argue pros and cons, this card worked for me and might be worth looking in to in your case too.

OK. Show's over and I managed to get out alive. I took some nice shots. I mainly used the 70-200mm MK II lens and even if it was cumbersome everynow and then it did well. The first thing I did when I got to the venue I set a custom white balance using the ambient light and that worked really well. I mostly shot in Shutter priority mode, since the dogs are never quite still I needed a shutter speed of atleast 1/160.
I let the camera worry about the ISO and aperture. for a couple of more static shots I used aperture priority with ISO still set to auto.

Seems a bit of a waste to get rid of all your EF-S glass. I'm very happy with my 7D for most any application. My next purchase will be the X1 Brian tripod kit from 3leggedthing.com, does anything I can possibly want it to and comes with a good versatile ballhead too.
Waiting for the 5D MKIII seems like waiting for the next processor upgrade for your computer, ther's always going to be a faster, better, cheaper one just around the corner. Just go with what you need and don't wait too long, there's too many pictures waiting to be taken.

I tried out some of the settings last night (outdoor though) and noticed that spot metering will cause some problems when the dogs are really dark. It will cause the rest of the scene to severely overexpose when using spot metering so I guess I'll go with center-weighted as that seemed to work better with dark dogs as the subject. Spot metering worked really nice with our white dog.

Good stuff here. I do have the length-wise very appropriate 18-135mm lens, but I don't think the aperture on that will be good enough as it drops down to 5.6 at 135mm.. atleast the 70-200mm is able to keep 2.8 at all lengths.
I do have an EF 50mm/f1.4 I might be able to use. =80mm on the 7D.

I'm going to photograph an indoor dogshow this coming weekend and I was wondering if you guys had any good tips. The lighting is fluorescent, but since the exhibition hall has very high ceiling it is slightly "murky". Flash usage may be restricted along the rings so that puts some challenge on it.
My choice of action would be to use my 7D with the 70-200mm mkII set at Aperture 3.5 and shutter speed at 1/250 with auto-ISO.
Do you think that would do it? Any tips or tricks are welcome.

Another thing to test is to enable the full 19 AF points and shoot in Full Auto mode. Can you get any sharp images that way? It is probably a silly test but...

I can't comment on the "sexy" stuff, but I can say the new DIGIC 5 (code name "Whole Hand") will thrill you and meet all your needs. Recently I visited Canon's ultra-secret digital development center at an undisclosed location near the southern tip of South America. All I can say is "Whole Hand" is astonishing.
Obviously, I can't give you all the details. However, I can say they are using string theory to induce a dimensional flux that creates a 3-dimensional output unlike anything we've seen before. I mean it looks more real than real. I saw them take a picture of a hay bale, and when they showed it to a horse he actually tried to eat it. They assured me Nikon has no technology even close to this.
It's on the near horizon, and they tell me the first to know will be the in-the-street retail sales force. They believe no one else is closer to the customer and is equipped to give him the absolute truth with undiminished clarity. Check in frequently with your local camera store -- could be any day now.
