Canon General / Re: Canon 60D or 7D
« on: March 16, 2011, 03:13:14 AM »
I'm very new to this "real" photography stuff and have only had my 7D for two weeks, but I can say it's the best thing ever. I can capture pretty much anything with it, at amazing quality at that.
I haven't used the 60D, but if I had gotten that, I think I might have ended up thinking "why didn't I shell out the few hundred more for the 7D?".
Canon 7D with a 70-200mm either the f/4L or the f2.8L II would pretty much do anything you like. :)

PS. bvukich: Yes, I think she's beautiful too. :) She's very easy to photograph as she has the patience to actually be still. Which the two other ones don't really do...

I really enjoy the 7D, just wish I'd thrown out the SuperZoom compacts earlier..  :)
I now have the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM lens and currently waiting for the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II to arrive.
I think that together with my kit lens, these three will tide me over for quite a while.
I'll post some more pics later today that I took with the 50mm lens and the 430EX II flash unit.
That flash unit is...well... WOW.... is the only word I can think of to describe. Never did I think it would make such a difference.
More to come.  ;)

I posted a couple of pictures from the fist day in the Animal Kingdom area. I think they came out nice even If I had no clue as to what I was doing..  :D

I took the camera with me to the bowling alley last night too. Amazing speed and sharpness. Even with the Kit lens.

The 50mm f/1.4 USM lens arrived yesterday as well so I will be giving that a go too.

I am really enjoying this. There's so much to learn it's unbelievable.. :)

Here I was sitting in my living room going through the settings of the camera when my dog decided I should play with her instead. Modifications done: Crop and RAW to JPEG conversion.
Comments appreciated.

First day playing around with the 7D and the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens. Nothing more than RAW to JPEG conversion done. The RAW image looks so much better. Suggestions and comments appreciated. (Dog is a 5 year old Great Pyrenean).

EOS Bodies / I have it!! The 7D!!
« on: March 07, 2011, 02:52:54 AM »
Got it last Friday. I've been playing around with it all weekend. I'm one happy puppy. Now I'm just waiting for the rest of the gear to arrive and I can make some serious tests between lenses etc.
The local shop had a brilliant offer I could pass up on anymore. It included the 18-135mm lens, a Small bag, an 8GB CF card, a book about the 7D and some other small accessories.
I'll be posting some pictures later on for you guys to comment. Being new to it I'm still getting my head around the menu structure and trying to setup an Custom auto-bracketing function to try my hand at HDR stuff.. :)
I'll get there.... eventually...

It seems at least here in Finland all the local shops are in bed together. I found one that was willing to give me a nice package deal, unfortunately they couldn't match the mix 'n' match price I set up. I am now getting the stuff from three different suppliers and managed to get an excellent deal.
Total came to 3850eur (roughly 5000USD).
But I got ALOT of stuff for that.
1 Backpack
1 Canon 7D Body
1 Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM
1 Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L USM II
1 Hoya UV-filter
1 Extra battery
1 Speedlite 430EX II
3 Books on photography and the 7D
1 Diffuser / Bouncer for the Flash
1 32GB Kingston Ultimate 600x CompactFlash card
1 Lexerd TrueVue Screen Protector set

I think I'm good to go with this.. :)

I tried the local store. Never have I've been met with such disinterest. I asked them to put together a nice package deal for the whole set, and they took off a whopping 7USD (5eur) from the list price.
Needless to say. I won't be spending my money there.
The 5eur they did give me discount was off a _used_ 70-200mm lens. Everything else was list price.
I know that (legit) dealers don't have much maneuvering space with the prices, but surely 5eur can be beaten.

I then went shopping around and found some very nice deals from Amazon for example.

All in all the set will cost me around 3850eur. (Almost a 1000eur less than what the local dealer gave me). I would have settled for a smaller discount and gotten it from them but they just did not want to play ball, so... bye bye...

I have now ordered the gear and I am anxiously awaiting it's arrival. I suspect all parts will be with me in the next 3-4 weeks. (I'm in no hurry.. :))

Yet again I am amazed by this community. Thank you (yes, even the moderator that removed the links. :))! I didn't know I shouldn't have posted those. I stand corrected.
From my research I've found, like other people already said, that there is very little variation in price between the real dealers and I am going to go with a good reputable source. It might cost me a few extra bucks, but I think the service and peace of mind is worth it.
I perused the resellerratings.com website and found it to be useful.
But now the decision is made, here's what I am getting:
Canon EOS 7D Digital SLR Camera Body Only
Replacement Battery for Canon EOS 7D / 5D Mark II (LP-E6)
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens
Lowepro Fastpack 200 (Black) DSLR Camera Backpack
Canon Speedlite 430EX II with Flash Diffuser

I think those should get me off to a nice start. Suggestions always accepted.. :)

My previous post about getting a 7D or not had excellent response and I have decided to go ahead and take the plunge as if it were.

However, after scouring through the vastness that is the internets I found a worrying number of scam sites and other problems. I'd like to see a new forum for posting about dealer experiences. Maybe some sort of rating system + comments. Possibly divided into regions (i.e. EMEA, APAC, LAC etc).

What do you guys think?

Many times the old: "If it seems too good to be true, it probably is." holds true. I mean a 7D for 805eur (920USD), is an amazing deal. BUT.....

Thanks to everyone for your excellent input and advice.
Nice to see people actually giving useful comments. I have booked an appointment at a local Photo specialist and we'll be going through and comparing the 7D and the 60D to find the best fit.

I have, as many others it seems, been unable to find any negative press/product returns regarding the 7D. All response have been overwhelmingly positive.

I will probably get one of the two, pending the outcome of this comparison session. I don't expect to go Full Frame anytime soon as I don't really see any massive improvement for my specific use. As I said, I'm not a professional, just an eager enthusiast.

I fully agree with the person who made the comment about: get what you want and don't skimp, you'll just feel disappointed afterwards. This is something I go by in my HiFi hobby as well. Some people say I'm nuts for spending so much on HiFi gear, but I feel I like to have the best tools for the job.  :D

Here's what I got an offer for earlier this week:
Canon 7D Body
Tamron 17-50/2.8 OS
Canon EF 70-200/4L IS
Canon Speedlight 430EXII

Plus a bag and some accessories, mem cards etc...

To everyone, thanks a million!

EOS Bodies / 7D - buy now or hold off?
« on: February 03, 2011, 10:55:00 AM »

New to this forum, and generally DSLRs in general. I've been coveting the 7D for some time now however, I noticed that that particular model has been released in September of 2009.
Now the question is, if I get it now, will there be a new model in two weeks (making a point, could be 3-6 months) or is it a safe bet?
Also some comments from people that have and use the 7D would be appreciated.
I'll be mostly taking pictures of my dogs outdoors, and they go really fast, ideas on setup (lenses etc)? I guess the 430 flash would suffice for the regular indoor photography as that's something I only do for the occasional party what have you not...
Nature and landscapes are also something I plan on shooting.

Thanks to everyone in advance.
