Technical Support / Re: Used gear in CPS?

I know I have some equipment that I have sold, but I have not found a way to remove it from my list of equipment on CPS.

The first thing you should buy is a book called "Photography" by Barbara London. You can find it on Amazon. This is  the book for learning photography. Read it, study it, live it. Practice everything in the book. It will teach you how to measure light and how to control your camera and is a primer for lighting basics.

Lighting / Re: 600EX-RT and third party gels
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:08:29 AM »
This year I switched from Nikon to Canon and have done over 20 weddings on the Canon system. I have two 5D3's and four 600-ex-rt's. I am finding the auto color balance of both systems to be about the same. I shoot most of the day in auto color, then when I get to the reception and put the gels on I find I have to manually set the color to get anywhere close. I normally choose something between 2600 and 3000 for color temp.

I started with the Canon orange filters and had good results but had minor problems with removing the gel holders from my belt with the Canon filers in them. The filters would slip out of the gel holder when I was handling them (think fast moving wedding photographer with four gels to install quickly). I ended up buying a couple of large sheets of filter material from amazon. I cut out filter pieces that were a little smaller than the Canon ones and taped them into the gel holders. With the smaller ones tapped in I no longer have issues with the filter slipping out of the gel when I am retrieving or putting the filers away on my belt. My cut out filters are a bit shorter than the canon and do not reach up to the sensor and clip area of the gel holder so the camera can't read the color of the filters but with manual settings of the color balance the results are the same. I shoot raw, so I just want the color close enough to get good exposures. I adjust the final color later in post.

I only ever use just one filter color so I don't need to change filters.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Going to my first wedding the the new 5d3

I see You shot auto. Everything worked great for the first shot of your son. But in the second shot the iso was droped from 6400 to 2500. When the camera saw the direct light from the windows and thought it had too much light and closed down. It would have better to blow out the window light so your daughters face was properly exposed.

I would have set your camera (in manual) for the position your son was at. Keep the camera in manual, and shoot each person as they pass that point.

If you and the paid photographer are that close, maybe you should sit down or shoot somewhere else? You were invited as a guest. The paid photographer is there to shoot the wedding.

There are many ways to handle sun coming through the glass. Often it is setting your camera for the light or the shadow. Sometimes I will set one body for the sun coming through the windows and the other body for the rest of the walk. Other times I may skip part of the walk. Most of the time I find using the auto settings will comprimise one or both lighting enviorments. It is better to get one outstanding photos of her walking down the isle than 10 so-so images. I always shoot the whole walk but I think ahead and setup each camera body for one part of the walk. I use the 70-200 when she starts out and the 24-70 as she gets closer.

I often shoot without looking through the view finder. I do both ground shots and overhead shots this way. The shot below was taken this weekend with the camera sitting on the floor. I set the focus point using liveview and then pressed the shutter release.

The 5D3 works very well at iso 6400. Just shoot raw and process the noise out later in photoshop or lightroom. Direct flash will kill most photos you get and it will disable the auto iso fuction in the camera (setting it at iso 400 if the flash is pointed forward). I normally shoot full manual in churches. For dark churches go with 6400 iso, and a speed of 100. If you shoot off angle you will see more blur but if you shoot strait on you see very little, maybe a bit in the hands. Fast glass like an 85 1.4 would help a lot.

Get away from the auto settings and learn to shoot in manual. Get to the church early and shoot and adjust settings until you get a good look in camera.

Lenses / Re: 85 mm Lens

I just purchased the Sigma 85 1.4 and used it at a wedding over the weekend. The results were fantastic. The images are sharper than my 50L at 1.4. I love the results and look forward to Sigma's release of a 35 1.4 very soon.

My only income is from wedding video and photography, it's full time gig for me.

Single card slot, 180 sync speed, 4000 shutter speed are all huge limits for me. I am looking for a backup body for my 2 5D3's but this is not it. I think I will be getting another 5D3.

I tried to work with the Tammy at the camera store. It seemed to focus ok for me (just looking at the back of the screen). I really liked the idea of IS in the lens. I could not get over having the zoom ring go the opposite direction. I often work with a 24-70 on my right side and a 70-200 on the left. Having two different zoom directions would drive me nuts and I know it would slow me down.

Here is my first shot of something other than my cat. This was shot handheld @ 70mm f/2.8 1/160 ISO 800, 5D3. Light on camera flash + off camera flash to camera left. Image was imported to lightroom and exported with all default settings. Other than resizing the image has not been changed. Temp was 100 degrees today so there is some sweat on the skin.

I only took a few photos with this lens today and most of the shoot was done with the 70-200. Really happy with the results and it will be replacing my 24-105 at this weekends wedding.

Lenses / Re: Anyone heard when BH, Adorama or Amazon will ship 24-70 II?
« on: September 12, 2012, 11:24:42 AM »
I received mine yesterday from my local camera dealer Horn Photo in Fresno. I have had much better luck getting new releases from the local dealer than I have BH or Amazon. I no longer preorder from the big stores as the local dealers get their shipments first. I have my 5D3's a week before most folks.

Help with what? I don't ever use P mode, I use Manual and Aperture modes. Most of the settings stay the same as you switch between modes but you will have to set some things with the different modes.
