Lenses / Looking for travel zoom
« on: June 05, 2012, 08:53:59 PM »
I am going on vacation with my new canon 5d3 with kit lens. I was considering the 70-300 is non l for a lightweight zoom. Anyone have any success with it or should I consider only the 70-200 f4 is l which is larger and heavier. I want to travel light. Any help is appreciated.

Hello,
I am going to San Diego and disneyland soon and want to carry my gear on my trip. I have the following:
Canon 5d3
24-105 with hood
50mm 1.4 hood
70-200 f4 is with hood (buying soon)
extra battery
430 ex ii
270 ex ii

I was used to the lowe pro sling shot 102AW but since going full frame now everything is bigger. I need to be able to stash the camera and grab it when a photo op comes up quickly so I would need to be able to stow the worst case scenario 5d3 with 70-200. The only ones I have found are the lowe pro 302aw which seems so big for a sling or the fastpack 350 but does not seem so well received. I have looked at the flipside but it seems so hard to spin the bag around just to take out the camera.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I have the Canon 5d3 with kit 24-105 and a 50 1.4. I want to tape their short graduation. Any suggestions on a less manual approach so I can get a decent video and not screw it up. Like what fstop would be good for a small 10 person class and ipb vs all-i, etc. It will be sunny but under a tent so I was thinking of some sort of auto iso or sticking with 1000. Any help would be appreciated plus should I do live, face det, for modes. Does IS enabled help or hurt? Sorry about the questions but I am under the gun and could use some guidance.

I just got a canon 5d3 and would like a little sharper images and I applied 45, .9, 48 and 5 to some indoor portraits and there's more detail but when I converted them to jpgs they look grainy. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I purchased the 5d3 a month ago and love it but sometimes the images can be soft and the focus system tricky. I was curious how dpreview can still say that the noise is even better controlled than the 5d3. Basically they do not say in anyway the 5d3 is better except the focus system and fps but really thats not much. Any thoughts?

Lenses / Going to Disneyland and San Diego and need lens help
« on: April 25, 2012, 08:41:41 AM »
I just bought the canon 5d3 with 24-105 and came from a 60d. I am having a hard time looking thru old pictures finding affordable lens choices for my upcoming trip. I have twins and will be taking shots of about 4-6 people during group shots and then the scenery shots.

I only have a $1500 budget.
I considered the following but can only afford one option
24mm mkii
35mm 1.4
70-200mm f4is

I have placed a few posts talking about which lenses I wanted to get with my new Canon 5d mk iii. I just found out that in order to get it I would have to sell my current Canon 60d with 17-55 2.8, 15-85mm variable aperature. I would also have to put in $500 more out of pocket than I can afford right now. I have had it for three weeks with a 30 day return option and I love it. It is the kit. I am just not sure if its worth the extra $500 beyond the already sizeable investment. I have an upcoming trip to San Diego, CA and I really wanted to learn this camera so I could be comfortable with it buy August.

My first question is should I just go for it with the added expense?

Keep my setup and sell the 15-85 and buy the 70-200 f4IS & maybe the 50mm 1.4?

Or a third suggestion?

I am just trying not to make an emotional decision since I love the 5d3. I know a lot of you suggested invest in glass so now is the time I am seriously considering that over the full frame option.

My main gripe is the iso performance above 800 on the 60d which is why I was looking at it.

Technical Support / Digital Media Backup
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:12:00 PM »
I current use an on site server and SOS online backup but I find my collection growing to large for what they want to charge for the next tier. What are you using out there to backup your digital collection of stills and video?

Technical Support / Where do you print your picture's?
« on: April 05, 2012, 11:10:37 PM »
I have for the longest time used 6 ink Canon printers on good glossy stock or used walgreens but the pictures look like they where taken with a $100 p&s. I was curious what you guys are using for printing? Who has the best high resolution prints?

I am having a hard time comparing photos at various iso's between the two in real life around the house shots any suggestions that anyone has would be great on how to test this during my return period. So far it has better color saturation and lower noise but it's still there. Maybe it's the kit lens but if so that's all I can afford right now. Ohh yeah and I do like the auto shutter speed you can set. Those who said it does not work just don't realize if the camera cannot shoot at your max set iso it will lower the shutter speed. That is a good thing. It's like people would want it not to work. Either way any good testing suggestions would be great. Also it seems like the 24-105 is really not that far of a zoom. I think if I keep it I will have to invest in a zoom before a prime.

Lenses / Have a canon 60d whats my next lens?
« on: March 29, 2012, 08:23:12 PM »
I have the 17-55 2.8 and 15-85mm and not sure if i should add a tele photo or a prime or wide angle. If my dreams of getting a ff camera right now are unachievable then justvtrying to figure out my next lens. I shoot family photography and lifestyle. Also considering the canon g1x for when my dslr will not be plausible. Any thoughts of what your doing out there?

I ordered this camera thinking of getting better iso performance and cleaner images but I am not sure now if the money is worth it since I own a Canon 60d and there seems to be a cheaper FF coming later this year. Finally there seems to be a lot of people stating that the 5d2 is just as good and there are not many improvements but I would never buy the 5d2 for just the metering and focus alone. One cannot live on center focus alone with two little ones running around. Someone please help comfort me or suggest I return it before I open it and get hooked in features that may not give me the financial results I am looking for. I know a pro will make it up but an enthusiast will only make it up by joy in his work. I enjoy photography and look forward to this but is it worth paying payments for the next 12 months for the iso and other gains from the 60d? I would also have to live with the kit lens for at least a year. The only good news is I got it for $4,199 out the door but its still expensive.

I would like to know if the 5d3 is worth it right now coming from aps-c or should I get the aging 5d2? I would like to know from real owners is it better and why?
