EOS Bodies / Re: Up the game
« on: May 08, 2012, 11:49:20 PM »
Nevertheless, I can't wait to see (and get some of my own) all the beautiful images that WILL come out of this crappy sensor.  ;)

I'm not sure anyone (who isn't just being spiteful) would actually call the sensor "crappy". Its certainly not a crappy sensor...however it is LACKING for some types of photography. I don't think there is any question that Canon sensors, for quite some time now, have offered lackluster dynamic range relative to the competition. Nikon was even getting over 12 stops of DR with their own sensors before they moved to Sony's game-changing Exmor. I believe millions of photographers will produce great photos with the 5D III, but that doesn't change the fact that Canon's sensor technology IS rather lackluster relative to the competition.

A better tool in skilled hands will always create a better result.

yeah, my bad, poor choice of a word.

I just need the best "film". And by best I mean the sensor with the highest resolution, widest DR, widest color gamut and lowest noise in my primary shooting range - 100-800. More DR means I have more zones to work with before I clip. That's vital.

Oh, really..?

Care to let us see an example of your work? It must be extraordinarily demanding, if you can only accomplish it when all of those criteria are met - in fact I can hardly believe that you've been able to make a single image so far.

So let's see what it is that you simply couldn't do with a lowly 5D Mk III then - we obviously have much to learn here.

For the avoidance of any doubt, yes, I'm "calling" you on this.

Given the amount of 5d3 bashing that's going on in this forum i've come across quite a few regular posters lose their cool. So it's ok to be wrong at times.

Not that UrbanVoyeur's points are invalid, it's simply a matter of fact that canon hasn't improved every parameter that could have been improved. Will canon deliver "superior" DR  in their next generation of releases - i bet even canon might not know at this point of time. Some of us can wait it out /switch /complain and hope some of the reasonable demands find their way into the next generation of canon cameras. There are others who will buy the 5d3 FWIW and find ways to get the best out of what the camera can deliver.

Nevertheless, I can't wait to see (and get some of my own) all the beautiful images that WILL come out of this crappy sensor.  ;)

And - for the avoidance of any doubt, assuming output/print sizes both cameras can achieve natively - D800 for landscapes, especially in contrasty, high DR situations where I want easily to dig detail out of shadows (it can take a little more effort to get them out of a 5D Mk III file); and the 5D Mk III for absolutely everything else.

My thoughts precisely.

I am not a stupid customer and will not budge just because they have a new body! Screw them! I am going to wait until the price for the quality is worthwhile.

I think you will have to hang on to your 40D for few more years. Happy shooting with your 40D! <No sarcasm>

It is beyond pathetic how some people can find reasons to justify their purchase! It is a bad purchase at that price!

In my limited experience, at least i haven't come across people who've made purchase decision only based on DR. For many many other reasons that ARE important for photographers there is Canon. Thank you.
<Again zero sarcasm>

In-Camera HDR, Handheld, think i had the HDR set to vivid, +/- 2EV.  Zero Editing - i like the warmer tone of the building which matches the actual look.

Great thread!

Here's a favorite shot I did back in 2002 using a Canon Elan 7 (35mm) and Tamron 20-40mm f/2.7-3.5 lens.

And here it is again, a decade later, using the 5D Mark II and the same Tamron lens!  (Pulled out of the closet, for just this purpose.)
28mm, 60 seconds, f/16, ISO 50, with B+W 10-stop ND filter

Lovely!
Amazing thread. keep it coming people :)

I had a small problem with Win 7 this morning - do you think I should return it to Microsoft?

Don't, Microsoft forgot that Win 7 exists they are busy with Win 8. Apparently, Win 8 has bugs too - it won't boot.

I shot an email to Canon, India and below is the response i got. I think it's fair.

*********
As far as we know, this phenomenon does not affect the 5D Mark III in real world shooting conditions. This is a theoretical issue that was present in the 5D Mark II as well, it is just that no photographer shoots under such artich as shooting with a lens cap on, or shooting in total darkness with a long exposure. And with exposures longer than a minute, the 2 seconds of LCD illumination would not effect the exposure to any degree.

We feel that this has been highlighted with strong intent to undermine what is a strong product.

However, to calm the fears of persons who have purchased the 5D Mark III we are offering this service free of charge, and all models shipped after this problem was noticed do not have this problem.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 5D Mark III Light Leak Resolution (Canon USA)
« on: April 25, 2012, 01:28:07 AM »

Now to say that it only affects low light situations seems odd to me.  Some of the first images I took with the camera outdoors on auto exposure seemed to me to be darker than I would have expected.  Now, I'm wondering if that could have been bright light from the sky underexposing my shady location.  I'm calling Canon tomorrow.

Wouldn't the ambient light coming through the lens dominate whatever leaked light coming through the top lcd?
i could be wrong here though.

Have you found any instance in which it affects a photograph?  Have you, really?

Actually, if you shoot in fairly low light AND either in Av/Tv mode then you can see the camera 'correcting' the exposure when the top LCD is switched on. There could be very few occasions when this could be a potential problem.
Am i worried about this issue? - Hell No!
Am i unhappy about it? - i would have to say yes. Not because this problem could affect my photos (now that i know of the *issue* i should remind myself to review the photos in  those very few occasions or alternatively shoot in M mode) but because i don't want anyone opening up my brand new camera that is < 1 month old. If only this *issue* wasn't there at all to start with.

CANON ALL THE WAY. . .

http://fstoppers.com/video-canon-5dm3-5dm2-and-nikon-d800-low-light-video-test

BEST ALL ROUND camera this side of the universe. . . heck I can't see ANY 95 in the Nikon example . . . . only in the Canon.

That test demonstrates that a certain N camera got Destroyed 800 times over and over!
but yeah some would argue it's *just* the low light video part..
