I wonder if I calculate the magnification right. Now I'm taking 71% of the total sensor surface. If I try to take 71% of each side of the sensor and then calculate the surface I end up with a tad smaller rectangle.

Ok I found a flaw. I assumed my Dell U2410 had 72 dpi, which I guess is from the old analog days, but it actually has 94 dpi. But I'm still not sure if the calculations are correct at all. Anyone?

Hi,

I am trying to make a little tool for myself to compare viewfinder sizes. I do get some results but the rectangles seem to be a bit small I think. Probably interpreting some values wrong. Can someone please have a look?

The colors in red are the 6D's sensor size, magnification, viewfinder coverage and aspect ratio respectively.

magni = ((35,8 mm * 23,9 mm) = 855,62 mm2) * .71x = 607,4902 mm2
surface = (magni * 97%) = 589,265494 mm2
edge = sqrt(surface) = 24,274791327630398396804364790437 mm) * 2 = 48,549582655260796793608729580875 mm
aspec_part = edge / (3 + 2) = 9,7099165310521593587217459161749 mm

Sorry for being unclear. By "wheel" I actually meant the D pad. And currently I change AF point using the top right button and then turning the wheel behind shutter just like you said.

I have some questions.

The sample images Canon released don't look exactly sharp, I don't know if it's due to the lack of sharpening or if it's just me, but can anybody comment on that or perhaps post a full-res jpg?

Any noticeable improvements in Dynamic Range?

Can you still change the AF point using the top right button like I can on my 500D, or do you have to use the wheel?

Thank you very much for your initial thoughts. I was kind of waiting for this information. I am in the same boat as you were, I have a 500D and use it for travel/nature. I went to a local photo store and held one in my hands. It feels absolutely amazing and the large viewfinder is a great improvement.

Thanks for answering my questions about focus, ISO and operation! I think I'm going to buy myself a nice Christmas present this year.

I use the 15-85 as my main lens on a 500D for more than 2 years now.

The range is great and the IS and USM are really good.

IQ is quite good at 24mm and up, even wide open, but my EF 50mm 1.4 is definitely noticeably sharper.

It has quite a bit CA, vignetting and distortion at 15mm, but thats correctable.

The colors and contrast are also a step up from the kitlens.

Flare is also very well handled.

The corners at 15mm are quite soft, which bothers me.

The bokeh it renders (if any...) is round and really creamy, much better than my 50 1.4 @5.6.

But god I wish it was a stop faster...
