check out the comparison tools @the-digital-picture.com

the 300/4 looks slightly sharper, but the 70-200+1.4 III combo is still better than for example a 70-300mm 4.5-5.6 IS USM

Canon EF Prime Lenses / Re: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM

My favourite lens. The close up images are simply stunning. However I also use it as a normal tele lens as well and last April I shot an evening soccer match with it. I think it was the worst combination you could use: a Rebel and a macro lens  ::) Anyway... it did the job and some results turned out nice.

I would be suspicious. Take a look at this post from the-digital-picture.com:

Nothing exciting - everyting as expected, but at least they start to announce products again. It will be interessting if they can deliver them at the time frame they mentioned (EF8-15 and Big Whites - BUMMER)

PowerShot Cameras / Re: Tonights Announcements [CR2]
« on: August 22, 2011, 06:04:59 PM »

For the moment, everything is pointing to new PowerShots being announced tonight.

An announcment tonight and no CR3?!

The next one is coming in October, more on that later.

Sounds good :P I hope there finally arrived some hints from known sources (any preproduction models around?) ;D

NO DIGIC V?

I can't find Canon putting it's latest innovation into a model where neither most users don't care about it nor it is neccessary. As far as I recall the 1D series where the ones to receive the new processor with (I think) the 50D beeing an exeption (1D III came shortly after)

TS-E 24mm @ f 3.5

nice shot do you have any pictures taken with this lens from eg. tunnel view or glacier point (a higher point of view)?

I just was in Yosemite last month again and I have to say... the valley was crowded as usual. However I did two hikes in the Toulumne Meadows area. The 12miles Clouds Rest trail and a shorter hike to Lambert Dome and Dog Lake. Hardly any other people and beautiful views.
Both were taken with a sigma 8-16 and then croped to a panorama :) amazing vistas captured with an amazing lens from lensrentals.com :D

So no G12 replacement?

Just because there's no rumor, it doesn't mean there's no replacement coming. But remember: Even if there's a rumor, there isn't necessarily a product coming.

Software & Accessories / Re: Neck strap alternatives

I have an RS-4 for almost two months now and used it alot during a three week-trip to the US. I carried it with a backpack on dayhikes in Yosemite and the FastenR-3 never worked itself loose.

How have you managed to get both a backpack and a black rapid strap on at the same time?

I actually have done the same thing. I put the BlackRapid on first, then my backpack. The straps to overlap on the left side but there is no conflict on the right. It was just like using a BR strap normally.

Yes.
Blackrapid first, then your backpack. you can even use the waist and breast straps of your backpack. simply close them under the Blackrapid and it works perfectly.
Keep in mind to take things like batteries and memory cards out of the small pocket. It's very annoying when your backpack's left shoulder strap has to be adjusted every ten minutes

Is this an unrealistic fear? I've thought about fastening some sort of a "safety loop" attaching the regular camera strap lugs to the Black Rapid strap. Anybody consider doing that, or do you all have complete confidence that the Black Rapid lug won't work itself look while the camera is dangling from it?

I have an RS-4 for almost two months now and used it alot during a three week-trip to the US. I carried it with a backpack on dayhikes in Yosemite and the FastenR-3 never worked itself loose. However my friends 400D almost fell down because his normal Neckstrap somehow got loose.

Making me even more paranoid is the fact that I use a battery grip, so in my mind there are two possible points of failure: the lug that attaches to the strap and the connection between the battery grip and the camera.

The standart strap also has two points to fail ;) but since it is what everyone uses and hardly anyone has problems with it people trust it 100%.
My advice is to order the BlackRapid and trust it 99%. It won't work itself loose in a single day so if you controll it every evening you're fine - I found myself playing around with it when I was bored on buses. Screed it off screed it in --> tight again

Lenses / Re: rumors about a new EF-S 10-22mm ??

Also keep in mind that the average consumer wants the latest tech-gear. If they hear the lens was anounced almost a decade ago but Nikon's just last year (ok I think I made that up) they probably prefer the Nikon. Same reason why they update Rebels and Powershots every year.

True, but the 'average consumer' is not the target market for the EF-S 10-22mm.  The average consumer would look at that lens and say, "Damn, that's expensive...why would I pay that much for just a lens when I can get a brand new T3i with a lens for the same price?!?"

Yes, of course. Forgot to mention that in the paragraph. It was more a reply on Gothmoth's post than on yours.

Can't see any reason why Canon should update the 10-22mm exept if they make it faster. Something like the Tokina 11-16 would be nice.

well canon has updated the 18-55mm IS and there was no reason either.
beside a few pennys they save on production cost.

The 18-55mm IS is the Rebel kit lens - as such, Canon sells more of that lens than any other, and possibly more than all others combined.  Saving a few pennies per lens is a very good reason for them to 'update' it.  It makes sense for them to update best-selling lenses - the sub-$300 lenses, they gave the EF-S 55-250mm lens the same profit-generating update.  The 10-22mm is a great lens, but not a real best-seller for Canon - most likely it would not be cost-effective to re-tool the production line for cosmetic changes.

Also keep in mind that the average consumer wants the latest tech-gear. If they hear the lens was anounced almost a decade ago but Nikon's just last year (ok I think I made that up) they probably prefer the Nikon. Same reason why they update Rebels and Powershots every year.

Addition:
I don't consider the EF-S 10-22mm to be an 'average-consumer-lens' :D
