EOS Bodies / First real shoot with 5D MK iii
« on: April 08, 2012, 02:53:27 PM »
A few days back I got the opportunity to take the 5D MK iii out on a real shoot. This made a great change compared to my pixel peeping and wandering about shots trying to assess the performance.

In summary I found the camera absolutely fantastic besides for it not supporting Pocket Wizards. I actually thought it did support them as I did a quick test at home but out in the field discovered that the flash emits the same low power regardless of settings. So hopefully PW come up with a FW update soon.

The focussing of the camera is the biggest bonus in m opinion. Each and every shot is dead on. No more doubt like there is with the 5D Mk ii. Of course the low light performance wasn't tested during this shoot but from other earlier shots I know it is excellent. The dual memory card slots gave me that added bit of peace of mind.

Looking forward to shooting my next wedding with this new machine!

Here are some shots from the shoot:

An update to my original post: they DO NOT work properly. I was mislead by the quick test I did inside my home. It was only later that I realised that the flash is pumping out the same low power regardless (manual flash). Range was no more than about 6 meters. I tried them on my Mk ii today and achieved a range of around 25 meters.

Let's hope PW come up with the goods, and soon!

Just thought I would share a quick test done this morning to confirm that the 5D MK iii works just fine with the Mini-TT1 and Flex-TT5 Pocket Wizards. High speed sync works perfectly fine as well. Not sure what FW version my PW's have loaded but it hasnlt been updated in probably 18 months.

One annoying feature is that when you change shutter speed in the HSS range, the shutter speed diaplay momentarily shows 1/200th before flipping back and showing the correct (higher) shutter speed. Not a big deal, as it all works just as before on the 5D Mk ii.

Thanks everyone! I can't believe I misssed that setting. A severe case of RTFM...  ;)

EOS Bodies / 5D MK iii focus confirmation grrrrrr.....
« on: March 31, 2012, 02:20:56 PM »
I am struggling a little bit to adapt to the lack of the visial focus confirmation on the 5D Mk iii. Okay, it does exist - in the bottom right corner of the viewfinder but it isn;t obvious and requires a very deliberate movement of the eye to look at it. This wasts time and slows things down, IMO.

I pretty much use the centre focus point for 99% of the time. On the Mk i and Mk ii, regardless of the ambient light levels, the focus point always momentarily flashes the instant focus is achieved. Since I shoot wedding I turn the audible focus confirmation off. This little flash of the focus point gives me the confidence to know that focus has been achieved. No more wondering.

But on the Mk iii this only happens in low light. In medium to brighter conditions, unless you waste half to one second to take your eye off your composition and check the tiny focus confirmation icon on the bottom right corner, you do not know that the camera has achieved focus on the subject.

I wish they would make a firmware update to add this to a menu item and make it an optional visual focus confirmation - either as it is (low light only), or to always give the little blip of the focus point.

HI all,

Today myself and a fellow photographer took our 5D MK iii's on a tour of a couple of fantastic (dark) certal London churches. Amongst other things we tried out the HDR meature. I thought I would share my experiences:

Very useful feature in my opinion, and not just for landscapes.

HI all. First post after being an avid reader for a long time.

I have posted my own review of the high ISO performance of the 5D Mkiii versus the Mkii, after spening most of today running the tests getting this all done.

Feel free to review it here:

Also, any comments as to the setup or validity are most welcome.
