What makes the most sense is developing new video AF technology.  The current implementation is not much better than a drunkard trying to focus at 3a.m. as seen on the SL1 and T4i and later.  Canon has introduced a bunch of STM lenses that are not good for anything if the video AF does not work as well.  There is no benefit to STM technology if it cannot be implemented well with a decent video AF solution.  There is currently not a demanding need for picture AF as there is for video.  It makes no sense to introduce a mirrorless camera with the same crappy video AF technology.

My prediction is that in July this technology will be seen in the new mirrorless camera that is due around that time as well so they can move more of their STM lenses.  further reason not to buy a SL1 or Ti5 right now.

Those were not any regular rollerblades.  Those were special ones with extra smooth wheels, a $950 accessory. 

It is $7500 because of the tax to pay for our welfare economy with over-regulation.  I expect the chinese version to come out soon for $750 - just don't lick the paint.

I may need to revise my prior remarks that the T5 does not have improved video auto focus. I read the product announcement closely for the other smaller Canon and I would assume that this new technology would also be in the T5 so perhaps we will see improved video autofocus. If so, this is a reason for me to finally buy a camera from Canon. Here is the quote:

The new AF system also includes a new Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor, which provides a wider focus area when shooting photos or video in Live View mode, and a continuous AF speed that’s increased from previous EOS models.

I skipped the  t4i because of bad video autofocus ability.   It focuses slightly faster than a drunk man looking for the house key on his key ring according to,the reviews.

Canon is silent about this issue and pretends it does not exist.

The reason the T4i is not that good is beacuase of the video AF fail.  Can anyone tell from the leaked specs whether the video AF will be fixed?  If just this one very important feature is fixed, that is enough to justify a new model.  Otherwise, I sat on the fence with the t4I, will stay on the fence with the t5I, too. 

Still using a Rebel xsi.

For me, the next level needs to respond to the criticism of the prior model and that was mainly the problem with the video autofocus. If they fix that and keep the other parts the same spec then it is still a winner and will definitely make me pull the trigger on a purchase.  I found this website and joined this forum around the time I started looking for a new camera to replace my rebel t4i. I decided not to get the rebel T4i because of the autofocus problem. I may get this camera or the next mirror less Version if they improve the video autofocus. Once they do that They will find plenty of new buyers of their cameras because many people want to do both video and photos With the same device just like we do with our iPhone but at a better quality level.  I Like my old camera because the photos are better than the iPhone and I want my videos to be better than the iPhone as well. When I can get both of those features  in the same camera I will buy.

I really doubt Canon won't take the advantage of a firmware update to try to market it as an AF improvement and then leave it as an unquantifiable statement about improved AF.

It is funny how many people knew this would be a stinker before it saw the inside of a showroom.  1st gen is not an excuse  - I would have fired the people who let a subpar product see light of day.  We are too kind to these people and show way too much loyalty.

I have been on the sidelines with my Rebel Xsi because I am a casual photographer and don't need this equipment to earn my living.  I will continue to wait one more cycle to see if Canon can fix AF issues with the Rebel, M series or the 6D and not keep making silly mistakes (one point AF on 6D)  - if the next product does not deliver then I guess Sony or Nikon will be getting my money.

I was wondering if the new EOS 6D that is coming out next month will have video AF much like the Rebel T4i?

The poor handing of video AF is what is stopping me from getting the T4i so I wonder if the 6D will have it - if so I will want to see how that feature works as compared to the Rebel's implentation of it.   Thanks, Tom.

Does anyone have advice for me.  I have a rebel t4i budget but I found this site while determining whether to wait for the t4i and then was swayed by the critics of the autofocus not to pull the trigger.  I am trying to upgrade from a rebel xsi so this will be my first camera for video too.  I want a camera that does both well.  I don't know if I can wait for the t5 as I suspect I'd have to wait a year.  If I don't use the af feature is it hard to do manual focusing?  I am tempted to get the eos-m just to bide my time until something better shows up.  What should I do?

because people do not want to piss off Canon and still give an honest assessment.

This camera has been out for a month and if you search the youtube postings of various video you will see plenty of footage has been shot with many sorry attempts at tracking moving objects and babies with the autofocus.  The Autofocus feature focuses only slightly better than a drunk with blood alcholol of 1.0 and it leads one to wonder if the only news is bad news then the silence has to be interpreted as not wanting to give bad news for fear of Canon blacklisting.  What else could it be?

I am confused - some are speculating the cost will be $2500.  Mark III is now selling for $150 less than MSRP.  If you are already shelling out $2500 bucks, wouldn't the marginal dollar difference work towards just getting the Mark III now and not having to wait half a year for a stripped down full frame?

I have an old Rebal Xsi and happened on this site when I wanted to learn more about my upgrade options.  I have waited for several months and I prefer to stay under $1K.  I am not happy with the t4i but still waiting to see how the mirrorless camera shoots video. 

On the other hand, I am thinking of getting a man purse and just going with the EOS-M.

If this is the same as a Rebel T4i minus the viewfinder and other parts, I do not understand the benefits of mirror less.  I would be interested in seeing side by side comparison shots to see what provides better quality.  I was in the market for a rebel but hesitant given the lack of improvement of video quality with the t4i.   I am now more interested in this EOS M camera than the rebel.  I also like the compact and don't care about the loss of a viewfinder - we are all trained by now not to use one thanks to the iPhone.
