hmmm... boutique showrooms, raised prices.... Canon might want to look at JCPenney as a case study in how NOT to implement the Apple model.     8)

The only thing that holds this lens from being an excellent lens is price.  If price goes down to at least $900, then this will become one of the best lenses out there.  I'd buy this as a kit lens with 6D if Canon somehow finds a way to bundle it with 6D.  6D + 24-70 F4 IS for around $2500, I think everyone will be very happy.

+1.  Lower the price and this is perceived as a very good lens.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Shooting With the EOS 6D in Costa Rica

Thank you for sharing the image.  I don't see how much can be told of the fine focus from a 1024x683 resize to the web, but the child in the lower right looks in focus, as should be the case.   The range of tonality held in the clouds is pretty impressive -- is this an in-cam HDR?  Cute kid, too: but you knew that already.

I'm thinking about getting a 6D ... and yes I'm a Canon APS-c shooter looking to move to full frame.   I liked what I saw in the specs of the D600, but I was put off by the dim viewfinder when I tried it out.   And the oil splatter issue doesn't appeal, either.    I'm sure I could get used to the D600, but I've gone from leaning to switching to pretty much settled on staying with Canon.

This is the first of the Art series from Sigma, and a great start.   But I'm more interested in something like a 24mm.

This being a rumor site, any idea what comes next in the Sigma Art series, and when?

Remember the parody videos on youtube for Hitler learns that the 7D will be shipping late, etc.?

It would make a good parody to see him ranting and raving about the 11 point AF and the dxomark scores...  and then at the end telling his generals...  OK... just get me a 6D now!!!  At least it doesn't have all those oil spots...

My attitude toward the 6D has turned around since this was was first announced.   I like what I'm seeing in the early sample pictures that have been coming out.   And I don't like the dust bunny issue of the D600.    Plus I got to try the D600 with Nikkor 70-300.  Impressions: the D600 viewfinder is dim (had it side by side with a 7D in the store) and the Nikkor 70-300 feels kind of clunky compared to the 70-300L.

I'm sure the D600 is good, but just saying the spec sheet doesn't tell the whole story.

EOS Bodies / Re: February & March are Announcement Months for Canon [CR2]
« on: November 18, 2012, 11:40:43 PM »

The 180nm process should start making appearances in DSLRs soon.
It appears that parts of the 6D sensor are already made on 180nm process, as vaguely confirmed by Canon Japan:
  • The newly developed CMOS sensor, introducing a process miniaturization in semiconductor process CMOS

It's interesting that Canon USA/Europe do not mention anything about that.

Based on the available info, though, I'd say that the 6D will end up having better image quality than the 5DIII.
Note that the rumors floating around are saying that only parts of the 6D sensor are made on 180nm.
So, the 6D sensor is essentially a 180nm/500nm hybrid.

The question is, are the new APS-C sensors from Canon going to be fully made on 180nm?
If they are 180nm/500nm hybrids, performance might not be all that different from current sensors.

But if they are fully made on 180nm, they are certainly going to match/beat the current 16mp Sony sensors.

Thanks - great find  -- there is a little blurb on Adorama saying:  "the sensor, which contains a new photodiode structure" ...  which also indicates something new to the sensor design, but that's a little vague.   Just what do "process miniaturization" and "new photodiode structure" mean to the design, exactly, anyway?   ???

It sounds promising: I'm looking forward to seeing some production 6D performance data.   Hopefully within a few weeks now.

I believe the "major" announcement will be the 7D mkII.    It will be the first camera with Canon's new-technology sensor, is my guess.

Page down to this page on Northlight (sourced from Chipworks) on what is likely to be coming.   http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_rumours.html        Canon is finally moving its process below 500 nanometers.

We'll see it on the 7DmkII, then the 70D, then most likely the t5i before anything on full-frame.  No full frame applications until 2014 or so.   But my guess is the new sensor tech will move up the refresh for the 5DmkIII a bit earlier than might be expected based on time between previous refreshes.

The new technology is coming ... we'll see it on the 7D mkII early next year... but the zillion dollar question is how good will it be?

Naming convention: since the sensor tech will be new, a new naming convention would make sense, fitting in with that part of the rumor.   It could be the Canon Apple 1 or something.    Whatever.

30% off the $1500 MSRP will give you $1000 addition to the body only price to make it a kt, or if you use the $350 number it would be $1150 adder.

6D kits would either be $3099 or $3249 - MSRP

5Dmk3 kits would either be $4499 or $4649 - MSRP

...and it would probably mean that the 6D + 24-105 will be a no-show, so the 6D + 24-105 @ 2899 will turn out to not be an option.   It will probably be 6D + 24-70 f4 @ 3199 only.

...  the Nikon D600 sells at BH with 24-85 today for 2596.95.

... I decided to defer my gear upgrade to the spring, so I have time to mull it over and look at reviews.   I like my prosumer Canon L glass, but now it is clear that the "prosumer" lens types are moving into professional price brackets.   That kind of defeats the whole marketing niche idea of prosumer glass.

Just another random thought: with Canon sending prices to the stratosphere, Nikon has a real opportunity to drop a FX sensor into a D5200 style body and sell it with the 24-85 for $1999.   I'd like to get that rumor started right now.   :)

Is there any way to get the MTF charts for these lenses at the moment?

It's up on canon usa

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_24_70mm_f_4l_is_usm

And here is a quick link to the 24-105 for comparison:
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/ef_lens_lineup/ef_24_105mm_f_4l_is_usm

The new lens does look a bit better, although at the tele end the comparsion is between 105 and 70.

And if you care to take a peek at the competition: it appears to blow the nikkor kit lens out of the water:

http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Products/Product/Camera-Lenses/2204/AF-S-NIKKOR-24-85mm-f%252F3.5-4.5G-ED-VR.html#!

...just going by mtf's, anyway.  But at the price it should.

If the 50 IS comes - it will be 2.0 or slower. We seem to be getting slower with IS on new glass.

If the 50mm 1.4 IS is 1.4 it would sort of almost justify the $799 price tag.   Any slower and: no.

Lenses / Re: Two Lenses to be Announced Shortly..... *UPDATE*
« on: November 04, 2012, 08:26:05 PM »
24-105 L is 670 g (1.67 pound), the new rumored 24-70 f4L IS is 545 g (1.21 pound).   Nearly a half pound lighter.   That part would be good.

White box 24-105 can be gotten for maybe $950: a savings $100 (comparing apples to apples, savings of 200 over what the 24-105 USA is going for today at B&H).

If this new lens has better optical performance within its range, better IS, faster AF it might be of interest.   Otherwise, the 24-105 is still worth the extra money for the extra range, imho.    It all depends on how good the lens turns out to be.

Is this a replacement for the 24-105?  Is it going to be the kit lens for the 6D instead of the previously mentioned 6D + 24-105?  Or a different kit variant?  Will Canon offer the 6D + 24-70 ff4L IS at significantly less than the $2899 pre-order pre-announced for the 6D + 24-105 f4L IS?   The retail price difference of the lenses  suggests 6D + 24-70f4L IS@ $2699 as an initial retail price.
