Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS Coming [CR3]
« on: October 30, 2012, 07:36:44 PM »
What if there was another loss in translation, and this will actually be a 17-70mm f/4L IS.  Now, that would be interesting...

Good idea: This is my favorite spin on the rumor so far!    8)

OK, a trip into the archives and I found this on page 50 of the EOS 3 user manual:

"(3) With the following lenses, if the maximum aperture is
anywhere from f/6.7 to f/8  when an Extender is
attached, the center focusing point will be sensitive to
horizontal lines only. The other focusing points cannot
be used for AF.
• With Extender EF 1.4x:
400/5.6L, 500/4.5L, 100-400/4.5-5.6L IS
• With Extender EF 2x:
300/4L, 300/4L IS, 500/4L IS, 600/4L,
600/4L IS, 70-200/4L"

So it is not unreasonable to expect a 5D mkIII to af at f8 with the central point (or points).   Not unreasonable to expect that of a 7D mk II either, I say.

Don't forget the part about ... at no charge...  Not as soon as one would like, but this is pretty good aftermarket support.  Kudos to Canon.

Meanwhile... at NR they are splashing a story about how a gap in the corner of the shutter curtain housing makes the D600 a dust bunny.   Folks are quippping about I AM NIKON / I AM SILENT on its failure to even acknowledge the issue (so far anyway).

I don't mean this as a C/N snipe (just think about tainted rubber for perspective) -- I'd like to make two points:

1) This pre-announcement of support shows Canon is serious and energized about competing.
2) As one considering what to do moving forward from Canon APS into FF sometime in the next several months, this does score some points with me for staying with Canon.

Oh, and speaking of tainted rubber and dust bunnies: the general rule still holds: never be an early adopter.   :o

No 70D?   Who knows?  don't lose heart yet -- it's just a CR1.    ;)

The performance of the new sensor:  that is the key to whether or not I'll be  interested.

The technology that gets announced in the large-MP FF later this month may give us an idea of what to expect in the new 7D mkII sensor.

EOS Bodies / My $.02 Canon 6D FUD [CR0]
« on: September 23, 2012, 05:32:46 PM »
I'm hoping that the 7dMkII and 70D enthusiast cameras are announced together in something like March.   That seems realistic to me.

imho, there is no way the 700D will be announced at the same time; Canon will almost certainly seek to reap the higher profit margins of the enthusiast cameras before bringing the new sensor to the 700D/T5i, probably in August.

A real sensor improvement and I may be able as an enthusiast to stay with APS-C for a while.  Also, by that time we'll have a clear idea of what the 6D performance really is, maybe even a special or two coming our way.  Or the 5DmkIII may have some attractive pricing or more deals coming along as well.

Bottom line is that the Canon FUD announcement with the 6D at Photokina worked on me.   OK: it's not really just FUD; there's a real working camera, just not yet a production camera and sensor for real testing.    But there's enough there and working now to string me along until next spring.   The summer hiking season is my main shooting season, so I need a new camera in my hands by next May.

Hopefully Canon will come through.  If not, the D600 will still be there.

I think what Canon did with the baobob series is kinda cool.   That equatorial vertical milky way rising out of the baobobs is really quite good.

If you look at the baobob branches of the daylight shot against the sky, the edges are not sharp -- similar to the model's facial details.   I agree with the opinion that not much sharpening was applied in cooking the jpeg compared to the Nikon.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Canon Announces the Canon EOS 6D DSLR

zheesh and only a 3.0 inch LCD...   and no headphone jack...

I was thinking that the scenario that would drive me to Nikon as I transition to FF would be Nikon producing a great intro FF camera, and Canon producing a dumbed down overpriced FF competitor.   Well, that scenario has happened.

I haven't made a final decision, but now I'm definitely leaning to switching over.   This from a Canonite since the Elan 7E!   Oh well... time marches on...

I totally agree!! unless they came up with a revolutionary sensor  8)

+1   That is the only thing that can save this spec, imho.

EOS Bodies / Re: Adorama is Taking Pre-Orders for EOS 6D
« on: September 16, 2012, 09:23:08 PM »
Maybe this will turn out to be better than we think.   There may be a reason Adorama decided to sell 818 5D mkIII bodies at $2750 on ebay yesterday.   Coincidence?    ...we'll know soon enough...

Is this true?  I look at price watch every day and didn't see this.  Any left?  How can I make sure I don't miss this again?

Yes, it is true.   It was on CanonPriceWatch yesterday on their home page in the Latest Hot Deals section.   Or you can navigate to the dslr section and look under other deals.   It was an ebay-only deal, but the vendor was Adorama and included USA warranty.   I followed the auction until it closed out with 818 sales (not views, sales).   Rather remarkable.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / A couple thoughts
« on: September 16, 2012, 01:52:18 PM »
meh -- thanks for the laugh!  :)

I'm hoping the 6D will be better than its rumored spec.   What could save it is a revolutionary new sensor.   If it does have such a sensor that could explain why Adorama decided to sell 818 5D mk III bodies on ebay yesterday for $2750 each (2 1/4 million in revenue).

Lens - bring on the 300 f4L mk II or the 100-400 L mkII with rotating focus ring, not push-pull.  Especially that latter.    If I wind up switching to N I guess it won't matter, but such an update would make it harder to leave!

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 6D Specs Leaked?
« on: September 15, 2012, 03:29:57 PM »
Is it possible that this is the Landscape shooters camera?

Well, I've chimed in with my observations like many ... but if this camera does have a new-technology sensor that has low read noise and a DR on a par (or better) to Nikon's -- and if these 11 af pts are new low-light points (closed loop?) that play a lot better than you might think 11 points would ... then ... this 6D may interest me after all.

If that is indeed what is coming ... well that would change things, eh?   8)

EOS Bodies / Canon security getting better?
« on: September 15, 2012, 01:12:37 AM »
Just time out to say: Canon will probably announce something next week and all we really have is a leaked G15 image.   Canon seems to be getting better at keeping a lid on things.

Who knows? -- maybe this CR1 leak is from Canon itself to see how the user base would react to a $2k dumbed down FF camera.  Ahem.   ::)    Not going over big.  Not at all.

So everyone, compared to what Nikon's D600 is offering and based on the recently released specs and pics (real or not) what is the most you would pay for this camera?  I'm going with $1600.

Agreed - I would consider 1500 the maximum "fair" price for a camera of this spec but I could stretch to 1600 maybe.     Just because I've already got some decent glass.   Beyond that, the D600 looks to be the better price/performance value.   Oh well, it is CR1, and if the "new" sensor is really lower read noise and higher DR that could change things a little.

If this spec turns out be true, and the price is really D600 less only ten percent or so, there will be a lot of people making the transition to FF who will be choosing Nikon.

I used to be a bit of a canonista, but I'm getting more brand agnostic every day.    ???
