For when Adorama runs out, or people that prefer NewEgg.

I just placed my order and will be cancelling my order from B&H in the morning.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Firmware Available

The "lazy" was more referring to QC on the firmware by obviously not testing the update on enough different body/scenarios to ensure it would work.  I do realize they can't test every scenario though, but a body with registered batteries seems like a fairly common one.

But, yes... I see new body firmwares coming soon! ;)
I don't think it's happening to every body with battery information registered; my 5d3 has battery info registered and the STM upgrade went through first try. But it is clearly happening to some combination of battery, body and battery information registration. I wouldn't rule out an unforeseen interaction between some custom setting and the battery registration.

I haven't been following this closely enough, but I wonder if maybe the issue is with battery information registered from counterfeit or third party batteries? Maybe the people who had the issue and then succeeded after deleting the battery registration information can chime in on that.

3 legit batteries, and a pre-order version of the lens from Amazon here.

Same result here with the battery registration delete after a failed update.

<snip>

Canon... really... REALLY?  That's just lazy.
I would guess less "lazy" and more "we have a bug with battery info registration we didn't know about and didn't see (on the new cameras) in our testing lab".

Same result here with the battery registration delete after a failed update.

1st attempt fail was 2768% with camera halt (firmware listed as 1.1.0 initially)
2nd attempt fail was 64% with shutter and shutdown (firmware listed as 0.0.0 initially)
Visit CR Forums, kill reg info
3rd attempt success without issue.

BTW... battery that succeed was at 77%, so full charge doesn't appear relevant.  Espescially considering the first two failures were with a 100% battery.

Canon... really... REALLY?  That's just lazy.

EOS Bodies / Re: The Techradar Test of the 5D MK3

I'm curious why people aren't more intrigued by this review seeing as it doesn't exactly put the DxO test on it's ear, but it certainly shows that in RAW (with TIFF conversion) the results are rather different.

or they will just post a link to the techradar test with a big question mark ?

and ask how two DxO test can have different results.

http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=5868.0

none of the techradar results make much sense at all

Why don't TechRadar's results make sense?

The one thing I walk away from those graphs with is the fact that Canon is obviously doing something pretty nasty during the in-body JPG conversion to have that large a discrepancy in the results.

Maybe it's because I want to believe those results, but they just feel more feasible.  Especially with the D4 having higher scores then the 800.

Couple of question I have from that review... which overall seems very well written and fair...

1) Wouldn't interpolating re-sizing the canon image from 22MP to 36MP potentially destroy some of the original data and increase the SNR in an unfavorable direction when trying to recover data from the shadows?  Could any additional color noise or banding been introduced as a result of the resize?

2) Would shooting with a Canon Mount Zeiss have made any difference over using the Nikon Mount version with the EOS adapter?  Could this have introduced any unwanted characteristics?

While I don't believe he should have reduced the D800 file, as I don't think that would be a fair comparison either, I would like to have seen a recovery performed on the original image, not interpolated.  Just for comparison.

It appears normalization is the bane of any comparison between these two bodies because the MP gap is just so large.

I'm asking these questions, because I honestly don't know the answers.  I'm making an assumption based only on my experience with reworking images.

3/3 4pm PST Order
3/27 6pm email confirmation for delivery
3/28 UPS Status: Out for Delivery!

My Location: SF, CA
Amazon Warehouse location: NV

Little frustrating... I ordered on 3/2 with next day delivery and yesterday the email said delivery date was estimated at the 29th.

I've had Amazon pull the shipping date game more than a few times in the past though where they say it's not shipping till later and the package ends up arriving before I get the actual shipping email.

Guess time will tell... still time left today for fedex to show up.   :)

I just got an email from Amazon... delivery date is 3/29.

Just cancelled the Best Buy order.

From the other thread about this... someone with an order date on the 5th just got a delivery date as well. So looks like Amazon is sending a whole bunch of them very soon.

I JUST got an email from Amazon... it's set to be delivered on 3/29.

Looks like they finally got off their collective asses over there.

I am an Amazon Prime member... I did order it with next day shipping for $3.99.

Otherwise... if there was any special treatment... I'm not seeing it.

My order was placed 3/2 at 10:30pm EST (def not in on the super early orders) and my order is still showing 'not yet shipped'

How people who ordered after a lot of us have better order statuses at this point is beyond me.

I'm baffled by all this and it's pretty obvious there is no rhyme or reason to what Amazon is doing on this one.

I've been a long time Amazon customer... since way back when they started only with text books in my college years.

I've been a prime member for as long as they've had the program.  And I make the majority of my purchases through Amazon... from groceries, to electronics and everything in between.   Spending a significant amount of money every year with them.

I have bought numerous things on pre-order from them in the past and never had a single issue...

BUT THIS is the biggest slap in the face from them I've ever dealt with.

It won't stop me from ordering from them in the future... but I simply don't understand why they have handled this pre-order so poorly.  I understand it's been confusing with both bodies coming out at the same time... but this has been plain ridiculous.

That all said... I saw Best Buy said they had the bodies in stock and available for shipping or in store pick up.  So I placed an order for one... said it won't be available for pickup until 4/2... so we'll see which arrives first.

« on: March 27, 2012, 12:10:52 PM »
I have a 3/2 pre-order for the body with Amazon (who doesn't? ;))

I JUST went to Best Buy's website this morning and they are listing the body as "add to cart" not pre-order.

So I placed the order for in store pickup.  I'll post back if the order goes back-order or something weird.  They are saying I'll be able to pick it up on 4/2.  Good news is it's from a local store in NH, so no sales tax.

*fingers crossed*
