EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Thinking of downgrading my 5d3 system
« on: January 06, 2013, 05:29:16 AM »
My old kit was the 7D with 17-55 and then my wife got me the 5D3 with the 24-105. I also have a G12 as my "point & shoot" for things like dinner parties and other times I don't want to lug the SLR. Well since getting the 5D3 I never want to go back to the 7D af again. I also don't know exactly where my G12 is anymore. The 5D3 with either the 40mm pancake or my nifty fifty is my new point and shoot.

Don't get rid of the 5D3 you will always regret this. Take some of the other advice here, especially with regards to the telephoto end. Get yourself one of the smaller primes, they are not expensive and more versatile than you think.

Don't know what I did to deserve my wife but I would so do it again and again (and again)! I hope you have as much fun with yours as I have had with mine.  8)

I assume you mean the 5D!  ;)

Erm, no. Both are a lot of fun.  ;D

Happy holidays everybody!!

My wife came home last week with a wrapped pressie, handed it to me and said you better learn how to use this before we leave for India (we're in India at the moment for a friend's wedding). I had been lusting over the 5D mkIII since it came out but refrained from buying. I unwrapped the box and it was a brand new 5D3 kit.  ;D ;D ;D

B&H are already offering a $200 "instant discount" on the MAP prices. Crisis averted. Well, almost.

Lenses / Re: Canon EF 24-70 f/4L IS Coming [CR3]

I think this will be the new FF kit lens. Probably even for the 5Diii. Everybody keeps saying that nobody would buy it as a stand alone lens but that's exactly the poiint. When last did you hear of somebody with a Rebel or xxD camera actually go and buy a 18-55 IS lens? That's just the kit lens. If you want something better you go and buy the 15-85 (24-105 for FF) or the 17-55 f2.8 (24-70 f2.8 for FF). this lens will be cheapish and it will be small and in every FF kit as standard.

Just my 2c worth.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 70D & 700D in 2013? [CR1]
« on: September 24, 2012, 08:11:59 AM »
You're failing to frame things in the right context. 4 years ago all people wanted was a better AF in the 5D2, now things have changed as technology matured and new performance standards were defined.

Also, the improvement in AF (supposedly) boasted by the 6D over the 5D2 is quite undersized for today's standards and for the price of that camera with respect to other missing features compared to its older sibling.

Some years ago a Blu-Ray player was 800€, now you can have one for 80€. Selling old technology for a brand-new price tag is unacceptable. But I guess Apple fans and stockholders would probably disagree with me.

Your blu-ray comparison is BS. There is nothing new in todays blu-ray player that wasn't in one from 4 years ago. So if you want to use that as an example then compare the price of the mkii from 4 years ago to now. Big difference right? The mkiii has a new sensor, new AF, new processor. i.e. it is NOT 4 year old tech. Anybody who thinks it is is just plain daft. It might not be the tech you wanted in the mkiii but it IS what people asked for.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 70D & 700D in 2013? [CR1]

I can't help but chuckle at the state of affairs on this forum now. For years I coveted a 5Dmkii but couldn't justify getting rid of my 7D to do it. After all the 7D AF system is "light years" ahead of the antiquated 5dmkii AF system. I read hundreds of threads and posts dedicated to how bad the mkii AF system was/is. The general consensus was just giv us a 22mp (who needs more, right) 5D with a better AF system. Well Canon delivered exactly that. What's the old saying? Watch out, you might get what you asked for. I'm still amazed at the pictures a lot of you have gotten with your 5D mkii and it's antiquated AF system.

So what exactly is needed on the 7Dmkii ? Just better DR? More MP? WiFi? Espresso maker? Remember the warning (it's in bold above).

P.S. I'm busy saving for a 5D mkiii and I am soooo loking forward to getting my hands on it, even if it doesn't have enough DR/MP/WiFi/whotsits/thinga-mabobs.  ;)

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 6D Official Specs
« on: September 17, 2012, 06:09:47 AM »
I haven't read all 16 pages so I'm not sure if this has already been posted. I checked the Canon (US) site and found some interesting things that are not quite the same as the CR "official specs" (or just missing).

Shutter Speeds 1/4000 to 30 sec., X-sync at 1/180 sec. (Total shutter speed range. Available range varies by shooting mode.)

AF Points
11 points

Center: cross-type at f/5.6; vertical line-sensitive at f/2.8.

Upper and lower AF points: vertical line-sensitive AF at f/5.6.

Other AF points: Horizontal line-sensitive AF at f/5.6.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 6D Specs Leaked?
« on: September 14, 2012, 11:23:27 AM »
I think this was leaked by Canon so they could sell more of their 5D mkii's that they have already made. I do have a question for everybody saying Canon should just put the 7D's AF system on a full fram sensor. Surely the AF system would only cover a very small portion (center only) of the bigger sensor? So essentially a 19 point AF system for a FF sensor would be a completely new AF system?
