EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mark II Replacement
« on: October 15, 2010, 01:26:11 PM »
Interesting points, but what would they put in the 1ds4 to make it worth 3-4x the price? It would need to come with e a wine cellar and an Aston Martin Vanquish.
If they go 28mp for the 5d3 (which sounds plausible) and upgrade the AF, weather sealing and add dual card slots, about all thats left to do is put in a higher res sensor which brings up potential quality issues and heading off towards 7d pixel size. Not saying you are wrong, but if they do that to a 5d3 I cannot wait to see the 1ds4! The d800 vs d3s is more analogous to the 5d3 and the 1d4 based on price positioning, the d700 doesn't look so great next to the d3x (apart from high iso). Its just how they chose to position their products relative to each other.

I was suprised at how close the 60d was to the t2i, you are right there is a big gap although 1600 is about 3-400 more than I paid for a 7d(canon rebate plus bing cashback).
It certainly seems like some divergent evolution has occured. I guess they wanted to keep 7d sales rolling so they had to move the xxd line closer to the txi line. By sharing the same sensor it makes it more interesting.
I was shocked to see the 5d2 so cheap on release, going to be fun seeing what happens next!

PowerShot Cameras / Re: Canon PowerShot SX30 IS & G12 Show Up
« on: October 08, 2010, 10:09:13 AM »
More is not better.  Better is better.

Thank you! Some sense in the world. Go work for canon. The 7d went some way to repair the damage done by the 50d to the argument that more mp isn't always bad as for a given print size pixels would be smaller and therefore noise would have less impact. However, there are some limits. This camera would be better with a larger sensor and a shorter zoom.

Mr canon sx30, you do make me chuckle. So my 24-105 with its 5x zoom range isnt professional, and my 70-200 2.8 must be less so then? My 300 2.8 must be my least professional lens by your logic! I wish someone told me before I got them! I should have gotten one of those awesome tamron superzoom 8-600mm f23 jobs I see in magazines. You try shooting weddings or commercial shoots with your 'more professional' sx30 lol.

Canon seem to have this more everything must be better rip going, if the sx30 had dslr like IQ then I'd be all over one but I doubt it. That lens has wayyy too much zoom to maintain quality and the sensor is just too small. The dof must be measured in AU, talk about 'to infinity and beyond!'.

Lenses / Re: 24-840mm zoom
« on: October 08, 2010, 09:31:16 AM »
wow great topic!
Firsly a couple of points :) a 28-300 with 2x tc to get to 600mm would be f11 no? and couldnt auto focus on any canon body? Its not the sharpest of lenses to begin with :) It would be bordering on pinhole photography like that ! Would be funny to see the results.
Also on dof / ap / sensor size. Not sure its exactly a marketing ploy, for a given resolution of sensor a 2.8 p&s lens will put the same number of photons on a given area of sensor as a 2.8 dslr lens. The dof would be much deeper but the actual light would be correct in relation to a 35mm or crop lens. Put simple we could both take the same picture at 2.8 and get the same shutter speeds for the same iso. I routinely use my 50 1.4 at 2.8 on a 5d2 to meter for my 110 2.8 mf lens / camera, but the mf lens at 2.8 gives about the same dof as the 50 1.4 at 1.4. Simples :(
As for a monster lens, it would be such a dog. Sigma make a 200-500 2.8, its quality wide open is suspect and it weights the same as a clydesdale horse that just ate a cow, but the horse is smaller. 2.8 zooms dont do well above 4x mag, f4's tend to top out at 5x mag and over that you tend to be in the realm of variable max apat like the 100-400 or 70-300. Not sure why, I hate physics and maths scares me. It also costs about 28k
Not sure as a photographer if Im anal about f2.8 lol I tend to use f4 zooms as canon make some great ones. I have primes for low light (50 1.4 and 300 2.8) and a 70-200 2.8. Why are they used? sometimes for thin dof to isolate a subject or for very dark conditions or when a fast shutter speed is needed. Trust me we dont buy them and lug them about for giggles or an ego boost. The 70-200 is a killer portrait lens as is the 300 , something I just cant get with something like a 70-300.
Nikon make a popular 200-400 which is a quality lens, but again its huge and expensive.
If the image quality was there I would go for a 24-500 f4 and live with the cost and weight but I just cant see them making a lens work at such a high magnification. The siggy 50-500 isnt known for prime like color / contrast and saturation. Its an amazing lens but only considering its versatility.
I settle for carrying two cams and a bunch of lenses, easiest way to do it :) Plus if canon made a single lens that negated the need for you to buy 5 other lenses you know it would cost a fortune for that alone. I just want a sharp 100-400, making it f4 would be even better, i'd be ok with a 200-400 f4 is for 1500-2000. i can dream!
As for a step up camera, dont discount film or an elderly dslr such as a 10d or 20d or some of the rebels. I shot a wedding with 20ds not too long ago due to loaning my primary cameras to a fellow tog whose cameras had busted and I got a call from a bride at the last minute desperate for a shooter. Its not that newer cams arent better, just that the older ones are as good as they were when they were new which was good enough to make money then. keh is a decent place in the us, mifsuds is for the uk for used gear.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 5D Mark ii rebates?
« on: October 08, 2010, 07:37:03 AM »
my earlier reply seems to have dissappeared. Dilbert, relax already and leave off the personal attacks, if you can't discuss based on logic you dont stand much chance of having your opinion respected, it smacks of tinfoil helmet brigade.

Why 3500, I could easily be wrong but my guess (and this is a rumours site and we are discussing for fun here) is based on several factors.
1- i expect the 5d3 to be released before the 1ds4 with a unique sensor which pushes up the cost
2- i expect canon will learn from the supply demand issues of the 5d2. Outside the united states of lard the 5d2 was tough to source, they priced it too cheaply and then couldn't increase the price.
3- the yen is very strong against the dollar and as we have seen with recent lenses this is affecting pricing, its easier to drastically increase the msrp of a new product than it is to do it to a product thats been rtm for years.
4- i think canon may move the 5d3 closer to the 1ds4, if they have different sensors than expect maybe better af and a higher price.
5- the 7d has cause the xxd line to drop down in spec, i expect it to move the 5d line up some.
6- the 7d now holds some ground against the 300/700's from nikon and the 1d4 isnt ff, so im thinking they may move the 5d3 into a position just under the d3, not alongside but close enough to interest people.
7- ff sensors cost money, it drops a little but not much. cpus may increase in power for the same cost but top of the line xeons still cost pretty much what they did 5 years ago. A wafer still costs a fortune to bake and etch. I can see gradual reductions in costs but sony allegedly want out of ff as it isnt making money so im not sure canon will go around 2k.

And no, i wont be selling my 5d2 :) Lesson over, you may return to watching the x files. Have a great day and relax, this is just for fun :) If im right then cool, if not I get a cheaper camera. Im laughing either way!

The 5d2 is a fine camera, i love mine to bits, but do you have a need for full frame? If you are doing predominantly low light work or need very shallow dof then its a fine choice, however a 7d or even 60d (i havent used it, just going on the sensor) may be a better choice and allow you to invest more in better glass. It really depends what you want to use it for!
Canon had decent rebates on the 5d2 in the last round of rebates, seems like its not included this time, possibly because its already cut close to the bone as its at the end of its product cycle and competing with the d700 which is in a similar situation. I will probably get roasted alive but the d700 is another camera worthy of consideration, you are trading megapixels for autofocus capability basically between the 5d2 and d700.
When a 5d3 comes out it should be in the 3500 range, the 5d2 will get a little cheaper but not much. Used the 5d classic after all this time routinely goes for 1100. Best of luck!
oh and the 24-105 is a great lens!

I remember when they released the 5d2 they said it had virtually the same af sensor as the 5d BUT that the chip that did the maths (as opposed to the sensing) was much faster. Its probably 50% marketing and 50% fact.

EOS Bodies / Re: Body forecast..?
« on: October 02, 2010, 03:32:35 AM »
Quite possibly :) There was one review site tdp maybe? that found the same issue. Given to some degree exposure is subjective it did occur to me that maybe somebody decided that if they labelled setting X as 640 instead of 400 then the noise would be more acceptable, rather than saying yeah iso 400 is actually a bit naff. Plus bumping the scale would be a way of getting to higher iso's. Sometimes its just fun to poke canon with sticks. It is the first time I've seen such issues found by review sites (although it probably has happened before).

Having the 5d2 which is pretty good with exposure once you understand how any metering system reacts to what you point it at (sand vs tux) its pretty darn accurate.I'm just glad the 7d is consistent. I leave it at +1 virtually all the time and the 5d2 at +1/3 assuming neutral targets.

I wouldn't have thought much of it if there weren't loads of people saying the same, its interesting yours does the opposite! The 7d is still an awesome camera, the AF is so darn quick and accurate. Not sure how much of an impact the icfl or whatever it is has had, I didn't have huge issues with the 5d2 in that respect.

It is interesting that the rumours point to a 5d3 with a unique (not shared with the 1ds4) sensor. I know they did this with the 5d original, but I thought canon was moving towards having as few sensor designs as possible.

Expect a 5d3 to debut at 3500 ish, at least thats my guess and drop by about 1200 across its production cycle. Exact amounts may vary. Expect a better FF sensor, dont expect much better AF, Canon arent stupid and fit only a decent AF to stop it hurting 1ds series sales. Seriously, why would they release a camera thats pretty much as good across the board for less than half the price :) They may be managers but even they arent that dumb. It it a bit funny when people say I want 7d af on a 5d sensor, it exists, it costs about 6500 and its a 1ds3 (or dare i mention a d3s :))
Speculating is fun and this site is brilliant and actually useful.
As a working (un)professional I would love to know when they are releasing stuff, even if its not what they are improving, so I can budget in advance. It really irks me that they have to be so secret squirrel about everything. Bottom line is i have to budget for capex a year in advance and use it within that year. They delay a 1ds4 to another fiscal year a lot of pros will be sat there going, well I have 20-30k of capex left now, screw the irs taxing it, hmmm those nikons / hassleblads / mamiyas / leicas look good!
TheRe is a lot of BS about the 5d2 and 7d, the AF on the 5d2 is very useable, the IQ on the 7d is suprisingly good for a crop, amazingly good for an 18mp crop. Once in lightroom with the right usm / profile / nr for both cams independantly applied ,  hand on heart if it wasnt that I use different focal lengths on each cam I couldn't tell them apart. Metering wise, the 5d2 is right 90% of the time and any errors are usually mine. The 7d is wrong 100% of the time, but mercifully it is predictably wrong, always need +2/3 ec. I am inclined to believe this is canon playing silly buggers with iso and that indicated 640 is infact actually 400 and they hoped it would give better noise results in tests and they could fudge the curves. Having said that noise is easily controlled on the 7d. Its a very capable camera!

EOS Bodies / Re: The Leica M9 Experience
« on: September 26, 2010, 08:10:23 AM »
I think I get what you mean about user experience.I feel the same way about medium format. Some of it is definitely just in my head, but some of it is real. Some cameras work in a different way forcing you to work in a different way, sometimes that way is better for some things. I spent a couple of years taking terrible landscape stuff, then I got a MF 6x7 and a big part of it was probably just being able to compose the shot on the ground glass and being forced to do it slowly and think about it. Others have possibly rightly said the same could be done via live view.
There is a dealer in the UK who does a lot of leica stuff and their slogan is something terribly poncy and elitist. There is a set of leica owners as you mention for whom it is about making up for their having very small willies, but that doesn;t detract that leica makes some very capable cameras. They are definitely more suited to street work than say  sports, but I would argue theyre more suited to street work than dslr's.
I have to admit when I looked at a rangefinder it was at bessa's not leicas :)

There's at least one big plus to own a MF-Cam as a studiophotographer. It just impresses your customers more than some "casual-dslr". Loads of customers which buy studioportraits, weddingportraits, etc. own one of the "beginners dslrs" which, you must admit this, look pretty the same compared to a 5D MKII/D700 in the eyes of someone whos not that interested in cameras. MF is just another "Level" to show of how pro you are.

For some reason people always ask me if my rz if a video camera?

Lenses / Re: Canon Announces 70-300 f/4-5.6L IS
« on: September 24, 2010, 07:41:06 AM »
Martijn, sigma make a decent 300 2.8 and 120-300 2.8, used they are bargains and offer really great quality for the price.

As for the 70-300L I am witholding judgement until I see results. With iso 1600 and 3200 being saleable settings these days I'm not worried about 5.6 so much (although not being able to use teles is a valid point). Im looking at this as a lense for when i dont want to carry the 300 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 about and be swapping lenses rather than as a direct replacement for any particular lens. I wouldnt be suprised if canon used this to delay or ditch a 100-400 upgrade. Other brands have managed to make good versions but canons was so/so. If its sharp at 300 @ 5.6 then it will probably sell. I was waiting on a 100-400 ii but this on a 7d is good enough if its sharp :)  I dont think canon are as crazy as it may seem. Now a 70-300 2.8 IS thats razor sharp would be worth some pennies !

I think I posted this here earlier. Canon are just deliberately teasing people, the picture looks alright but you cant judge anything by it really as its from a biased source and could have been shopped heavily. At least we are starting to get close to knowing something about it.  canon just need to release it already.
a 100-400 ii would be nice as well :)

Sorry just reread.

The goal of photography is instantaneous? Do you feel thats universal? Its an interesting statement and Im not questioning the validity of it. Its just totally different to how I view the goal.

Re tethering, it depends on the situation, it can be quite liberating knowing you can be seeing the work on a calibrated 30inch monitor as you are shooting, but primarily the benefits come down to making life easier. I love being a photographer, but i love it more when its easier!

Plus its optional tethering, you can when you want, or you can tether 'in the wild' to a laptop or you can shoot on the back. Its just added flexibility. I find myself tethering the dslrs more for landscape stuff these days.
