Lenses / Re: A Brief Hands On: Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L II
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:42:15 PM »
But in any case: Looking at the real world 5d3 shots from users in the forum tells me that the 5d3 might be a little better than the 36mp d800 at higher iso, but the improvement from the 5d2 is really not so large and people are strangely shocked to find iso noise in 5d3 shots at all...

Maybe I am wrong about this, but I went from a 5D Mark II to a 5D Mark III and I shoot mainly in low light conditions (at night): When shooting a recent project (http://www.christianschmeer.com/filter/portfolio/The-Kray-Series-2012) I found the 5D Mark III noise to be way better than the noise on the 5D Mark II. It looks much more natural and is easier to deal with in Lightroom. All images were shot between 5000 and 8000 ISO. Once Lightroom got rid of the colour noise, the remaining luminance noise looked similar (not equal to, but definitely more natural) to a nice film grain. I actually reshot one of the photos with the 5DIII that I initially shot with the 5DII. Anyway, my point is that for me personally, the 5DIII noise seems way better than the 5DII noise.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon 5D Mark III Light Leak Resolution (Canon USA)

What's going on at Canon Europe? They've taken down the "advisory" note, but haven't written anything about THEIR resolution.

The URL where the advisory used to be now only states the DPP issue, not even the issue with lenses anymore either  :-\ (or was that taken care of with the firmware update?)

To be honest, I don't care about the light leak personally. However, I am a bit worried about Canon putting the blame on a specific batch of cameras because of resale value  :-\ Either way, I want the issue/non-issue looked at and fixed for this very reason.

I got a response from Canon Europe:
Quote
"Further to your enquiry, I can confirm that what you are experiencing has been recognized by Canon as a known issue and we would like to draw your attention to the following information.  We very recently (in April) became aware of this phenomenon in the EOS 5D Mark III model which means that the AE sensor in the camera detects the light from the LCD panel when it is turned on and the exposure value is altered. The change is not significant as it is only altered by approximately 1/3rd of a stop but this can be noticeable. You can continue to use your 5D Mark III and the LCD screen can be turned off to receive the correct exposure.

Canon is now examining the countermeasures and once the countermeasures are finalized we will post the information on our website. Until then please accept our apologies for the inconvenience caused."

Canon Europe has posted the same message :)

Waiting for a fix! :) Love the camera, but what I don't like so much about the Mark III is that the buttons feel kind of cheap when you press them in comparison to the Mark II and the large thumbwheel makes variating rattling noises when you turn it (the Mark II had a rock solid clicking thumbwheel). Maybe it's just my 5D Mark III that has this rattling thumbwheel?
