Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Canon 600EX/RT + Softbox question
« on: April 02, 2012, 10:38:38 AM »
I just received the 2 600EX's I ordered. Should be getting the new transmitter delivered today :).  I purchased 2 speedlight brackets that allow me to attach Bowen mount accessories to the speedlights and then mount them on a lightstand.  I'm just not sure what size softboxes I should get.  I want Octo style boxes. But how large do you think is acceptable?  The brackets I picked up are very well made and should hold larger boxes.

I want the larger boxes for full body portraits. Will also be using for head to shoulder portraits as well, both inside and outdoors.

Is there enough power in the 600EX's to use a softbox larger than 48" or is that size to large?
I've also seen both  a 32"+ 36" Octobox, which are  possibilities.

I dont want to have to sit on top of my subject to see the light.

Some might question why I purchased the 600's instead of full size studio strobes. Well, I love the portability I'm going to have with no power cords needed.  Plus I like the fact I'll be able to use the 600EX on my RRS flash bracket attached to my 5D3 and walk around and my wife can use the other on her camera when not doing portraits.

I agree - that gap is annoying. For other bodies, some RRS models have such a gap, whereas the Kirk equivalent does not. Worth a look...

I cant seem to find a photo of the Kirk L-plate. Have you seen one?  If so, where?  Thanks!

Not liking the look of the Really Right Stuff L-Plate for the 5D3. The large gap on the cable connection side doesnt look very good to me.  Anyone agree?   I'm sure its necessary but I still dont like the look.

I too am waiting for this grip!  I saw a website that stated April 30 as an availability date.

The biggest thing I took from the article is the D4 is a piece of junk.  Nikon should be ashamed for selling and overpriced d400 marked and sold as a D4.

Accordingly, the D3s also appears to be an over priced POS...

at least that is what the DxOMark score says...

So the bigger question... What does that say about the DxO scoring and testing...

D800 specs on paper look fantastic and make it  look like the best dslr ever to be made with a $3000 price tag but in reality its not as good as it seems. Nikon knows this, thus the $3000 sticker price.

I got tired of waiting for my order from adorama and amazon... so I ordered one yesterday around 11am CST from ephotocraft.....   they took the 24-105 lens out of the box and charged me only for the camera :)

Same a tip here yesterday about ephotocraft saying they had the 5D3 in stock so I called and ordered a body.  Just received it this morning.  On the phone they were very helpful + polite.
I think I just found a new dealer to buy my photo gear from!!

Now, if Amazon would ship my 5D3.....

EOS Bodies / Re: Hugely Disappointed In 5D III Price
« on: March 21, 2012, 11:46:20 AM »
I think the reason for the $3499 price tag is because if Canon had the msrp to match or beat the D800, people who are deciding to get or not to get the 5D III or the 5D MK II might be more tempted to get the 5D III, if it were priced lower. That would slow down alot of the sales of the remaining 5D MK II's. Yes it is still not officially discontinued yet, but will be.  How many people would buy a discontinued product for $2000 with the fear of no new firmware updates, decreasing replacement part supply, probably no new accessories announced?

When the stock of 5D MK II's starts to dwindle then we might see a small decrease in the 5D MK III price, to better compete with the D800.

Just looking at the 5D Mark III specs and read that the

"Working Humidity Range
85% or less"

Is this a normal range for DSLR's?

I live in South Florida and during the summer the humidity can exceded 85%.  Might there be problems?

website now reads:

Availability: Taking Orders -

Please Note: You can order this now and as soon as it arrives we will ship it to you.
We only charge your card when we actually ship.

So I guess their stock is now accounted for.   Placed my order with them 20 minutes ago, when website said     " In Stock" so hopefully I got one.

Do you know how many units they are receiving today?

Sorry, when he told me I would be covered with what they are getting today, I was so happy and never asked for the total they would be receiving today.

Availability: In Stock

Thanks just ordered a body from them now. They say they are getting them today both bodies and kits. If you look at their website they say you might get the body or a kit box with the lens removed. Either way I am happy. The customer service guy said I will be covered with the amount of cameras they are getting today.  :)

I just cancelled my Adorama order so whoever is on their pre-order list, just moved up a spot ;)

EOS Bodies / Re: 5D Mk. III Best Buy Pre-Order
« on: March 10, 2012, 10:20:22 PM »
Anyone pre-order their new 5D's through Best Buy?

They have excellent financing and it's something I'm considering.  I haven't pre-ordered yet so I know I probably missed the initial shipment.  I usually buy big ticket items from them and have had a good experience

I went to and considered a pre-order with them but quickly changed my mind when they were going to charge me $100.00 for shipping/ BTW I live in Miami not Africa, so why $100?????
