EOS Bodies / Re: Official DXOMark Sensor Score for the EOS-1D X
« on: October 31, 2012, 04:49:05 PM »
Sorry to get such a rise out of you guys.  ;)

It's strange to me how different stills people are vs. video people. Many video people are company agnostic for the most part. They tend to just go with what is the best camera out (probably because many use manual lenses so the investment in one company isn't quite as heavy). Stills people are ardent defenders of the faith. You are either Canon or Nikon, and you guys will defend your company to death. Saying something bad about Canon (or Nikon on the "other" site) is like insulting your mother, or probably worse.

I'm sure the people at Nikonrumors are saying DXO is the greatest and most accurate tests ever.

If the tables were turned and the 1DX was the camera scoring a 95 instead of the D800, people at Canonrumors would revere DXO.

No one likes to be on the losing end, and if anything, this should be a wake up to Canon to step their game up since Sony sensors are kicking their Butt, on both the stills and the video end. Since I'm more on the video end, not sure if you guys heard about the new Sony F5, close in price to the Canon C300, but about 5x the camera. The C300 is not even remotely in the same league.

The story line has been repeating over and over this year, Canon needs to step up on all fronts. Fortunately, they can ride on their name for a while, but soon, people will expect results.

3
The funniest thing is that if they did the 5D3 right, it would have probably been the biggest selling large sensor video hybrid camera in history. For every C300 they sold, they would have sold 100 5D3s if it was done right.

But now as it stands, nobody really cares about their cameras for video and the 5D3 has very lukewarm sales for the video crowd (not even close to the 5D2 or the 7D). Not only did they lose huge amounts of sales, they lost a huge amount of respect from their video customers and once people leave, it's hard to get them back.

For me, I bought a Sony FS700 and I absolutely LOVE it. Great camera for the price. It's been about 1 1/2 years since I've bought anything Canon, and that's not going to change until they make something worth buying.

4
The writing is on the wall for Canon, as it has been for some time now. But now, many people (including myself) have gone to greener and much better pastures for video (Sony, BMC, Panny, Nikon, etc....)

Canon needs to start competing in video instead of riding on their fast fading name. Cut prices and start making competitive products. Even in stills, Nikon has the better bodies now. That's really sad for a company that accidentally started a revolution with the 5D2, but failed to follow up on it because of greed.

Canon had to do so little to own the video market, but the way they played their cards was like going into the NBA finals with a 30 point lead in the fourth quarter and somehow losing. Seemed almost impossible to do, but they lost the video market they should have owned.

Someone mentioned they'd be surprised if they sold 100 of these things. I'd be surprised if they sold more than 5. Nobody I know who works in video and TV are excited about it. It's was announced days ago and nobody really even cares at this point, probably because of the ridiculous price.

Now Black Magic and Sony, they are making some serious waves in video. Could have been Canon, but they let it all slip away with their greed.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon Rebel T4i Review With Video Samples
« on: June 15, 2012, 02:00:16 PM »
It's strange that they fixed the moire and aliasing in the 5D3, but not in this camera. It's the same video quality as 4 years ago. :(

I was hoping to pick one up as a cheap B-Cam to the Sony FS, but the Aliasing and Moire make it a no go. I'm still a bit baffled by all the crippling that Canon is doing to their products. I would have gladly bought a 5D3 and the new Rebel if it just had a few more basic, yet essential 2012 video features (true HD resolution, no moire/aliasing, 1080p 60fps)  :(

Well, these videos should make the stills people happy, as it just further drives us video folks away from Canon as there is no viable mid-level video option (btw $4K to $8K). Soon enough, Canon will be back to just being a Stills camera company.

not crazy about the touch screen idea. Why would I want finger smudges while I'm trying just focus and exposure? Plus I use a Z-Finder so I would have to take it off inorder to use the touch screen.

Are you they going to have an option to disable it?

Probably going to pick up a Rebel as a cheap video B-Cam to my soon-to-be Sony FS since I have too many canon lenses.

I just hope that the Rebel actually has true HD (not the soft up-res'd stuff). That and 1080p 60fps slow motion is all I ask for. But since the 5D3 doesn't have either of those, I'm not holding my breath.
Sounds like you want a hacked GH2. You'll get your resolution (comparable with your FS, etc), and you'll get 1080/60. Not to mention it will open up the ability to use FD lenses as well

edit: some examples, http://www.eoshd.com/content/6681/shootout-reveals-panasonic-gh2-resolution-at-canon-c300-level

The GH2 would be cool, except I have too many Canon lenses. Plus, I'm not crazy about GH2 color and the 2x crop. Canon has much better Color science and aesthetic IMO, but that's entirely subjective.

EOS Bodies - For Video / Re: Magic Lantern on the 5D Mark III
« on: April 27, 2012, 01:37:19 PM »
This is great, except I'm not really sure that ML can fix the really soft resolution of the 5D3.

Even though the $8K that I have saved up is probably going to the soon to be released Sony FS700 since it's far superior to anything Canon video is offering, especially for the price; I will probably donate to ML just because they are doing great things.

If Magic Lantern can 1) Increase the resolution on the video 2) offer clean HDMI out 3) Can over-crank to at least 60fps at 1080p (hopefully 120fps at 1080p since Sony has raised the bar so high at 480 fps at 1080p); then Canon might retain me as a customer, otherwise, Sony it is.

It's kind of sad that Canon video has fallen to such a low that they have to depend on a group hackers to save their dwindling customer base who are flocking to the much better alternatives offered by Sony, Black Magic and even the Nikon D800 has some huge advantages over the 5D3 like higher resolution, clean HDMI and crop modes; and that camera is $400 less. WTF Canon.

Anyways, go Magic Lantern. You guys rule.

EOS Bodies / Re: Next Canon step in the matter of their sensors
« on: April 21, 2012, 09:50:22 AM »
My impression is they're spending all their time and effort in video, and have neglected any major development on the stills performance side of the sensors.

That's a huge misstatement. Their current video products are consider so overpriced and underspec'd that they're getting destroyed on the video forums. Nikon D800 video is even shining over the 5D3.

Canon has just slacked too hard the last few years. They lost the hunger after the success of the 5D2 on all fronts.

EOS Bodies / Re: NEW CANON 5D-CINEMA!!! POSSIBLE LEAK!!!
« on: April 19, 2012, 10:50:09 PM »
This is a total hoax.

Canon video is like a bad re-run that keeps repeating itself and letting all their loyal video customers down again and again.

So guess what? Nikon added clean HDMI and higher resolution to their D800 video, Sony is coming out with the FS700 which is truly mind blowing for $8K or so and Black Magic just came out with their 2.5K Raw camera.

So where is Canon? Catering to large studios with absurdly expensive and under-spec'd gear that is not going to sell well.

The result? Canon lost this Full Frame round to Nikon. And they also lost this round of video to Sony, Nikon and Black Magic.

They need to listen and make something worthwhile, at least on the video front. But somehow... I think it's going to be a long time from now.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon is getting owned in sensor technology
« on: April 19, 2012, 05:06:33 PM »

With either camera, I'm sure you can tell exceptional photos. But I must say the d800 score really shocked me since they even beat some of the medium format cameras. Nikon made a big improvement. Perhaps Canon has been working more on their cinema products.

Actually, Canon is getting OWNED in the cinema world by Sony because of their outrageous prices and under-spec'd video cameras. Canon is getting bashed to death on the video forums.

The upcoming Sony FS700 is going to destroy Canon video. I've have not seen this much excitement over a video camera since the 5D2. Video geeks are going nuts over this truly amazing camera for the price.

Meanwhile, Canon is charging 4x as much as Sony, for something that is remotely similar. I had $8K for a Canon video camera, but now that money is going to Sony.

I also find it strange that Canon has very few people testing their pre-production models. It's like, even for very high profile pros, they only use Canon video cameras after they come out. There are many Sony FS700s in the field and it's getting tested to death by many people before it's release in 2 months.

Canon should follow suit, and not hide all their footage until the release of the camera. It shows no confidence.

I also find it strange that the D800 has clean HDMI and a much sharper video image than the 5D3. Depressing.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon releases are getting expensive!
« on: April 16, 2012, 01:41:41 PM »
Even for the Pro market, Canon is pricing themselves out of consideration.

Joe Marine, who writes a popular blog at nofilmschool.com wrote his observation at NAB this past weekend on the Pro video market. When it came to Canon at NAB, he was very un-enthusiastic. He wrote:

"What’s Canon doing? I’m not really sure, but they are certainly pricing themselves out of the market in features alone. Both of their new cameras are going to produce amazing images, but their top-of-the-line camera should really be much more comparable to the F65 or the Epic. If you’re going to make a camera that expensive, it makes sense to me that you would go all out and put the biggest sensor and the highest bit depth and frame rates that you can into it. The C500 fits much, much better as a $15,000 camera, and the 1DC should be half that price at around $7,500 (closer to the FS700). If they released those new cameras at those prices it would make a lot more sense. Sony’s offerings are cheaper and more fully featured. This is not a statement for Sony and against Canon, it’s merely an observation that on price alone, the specs just don’t add up."

Of course Sony, who is about to release the ground breaking FS700 at an amazingly affordable price has received heaps of praise on the internet forums from video people, while Canon has been bashed to death for their outrageous pricing and lackluster specs. Just goes to show that YES, consumers and professionals alike appreciate good value and can spot overpriced, under-spec'd products very quickly.

I really wanted to stay with Canon and I had about $8K or so to spend on a video camera, but I'm going to have to jump ship to the Sony FS700. I just can't wait any longer for Canon to release something in the $5K to $9K range that is worth buying. Thank God for electronic lens adaptors, so I can use EOS lenses on the sony.

I find it strange that so many are defending Canon on their outrageous video pricing.

If you look at the upcoming Sony FS-700 being offered at $10K with all the video bells and whistles, future proof 4K resolution and shoots up to 960 fps. Now that's INNOVATION. And the results? Video people are singing Sony's praises for offering such cutting edge tech at a good price. Sony is going to sell a LOT of cameras.

Now Canon on the other hand, very over-priced, underspec'd video offerings and the results? Luke warm to very negative reactions across with board with very, very few people singing their praises.

Moral of the story, consumers, no matter if they are amateurs or professionals all want the same thing. Value for their money. Canon is not doing it, at least with video. Sony is, and the video sales will be reflected accordingly.

The strangest thing is the the C-500 has extremely amazing Specs. and is cheap at $35K. That's a camera that is about half of what the camera's is competing against RED and Alexa around $60K to $70K.

It's like Canon video has decided that they want to undercut the high end, but way over-charge on the low to mid end where their core customers are. Strange strategy since High end products make little money and it's the low to mid end is where all the profit is. They have really lost their direction.

But it's a tough decision to jump ship because I have all L lenses so Canon basically owns me and my future children and grand children.
