Lenses / Re: Thinking about a 17-40 f4L USM. Thoughts?
« on: November 04, 2012, 07:25:00 AM »
I have owned the 17-40L, 16-35L and EFS10-22.

On a 60D or Rebel, I think the EFS10-22 is the best landscape lens. Great build quality, very good perfrmance and gives you an effective focal length of 16-35; excellent for landscape or tight interior shots.

The 17-40L was my first L series lens, I used it exclusively for two years with very good results. I changed I the 16-35L for the extra stop. At one point I purchased the EFS10-22 and did a lot of outdoor landscape with it. Images were very sharp, color and contrast were very good.

I have the 24L and 50L, no zoom can touch them IMO, plus the bokeh of each is wonderful.

You should consider replacing the 60D with a body that has AFMA before investing much in high speed glass.

Agree

The 60D is the main thing holding you back at this point. Consider the 5D3 with the 24-105 kit lens; you will not be disappointed.

I am a fan of this lens as well. So much so that I have now moved to the 300 F2.8 L IS. Doh! now I have to sell my F4!

Same!

The 300 f4 IS was a useful focal length for me as well; I upgraded to the 300 f2.8 IS earlier this year.

Buy the 5D3 with the 24-105 f4 kit lens.

Keep your 50 1.4 and your 200 2.8, enjoy.

The 300 f4 is very good, and works well with the 1.4x II. It is much more affordable than the 70-200 II, new or used.

I have both.

Love the 135 f2, sold my 70-200 as a result. But agree with others, not necessarily the right choice for video.

I would suggest you look at the 24 f1.4 or 35 f1.4 before making your final decision.

shoot tight: head & shoulder (use 70-200).. use couple angle from top down (get a ladder).

Agree.

Camera angle is important; make sure the camera is a few inches above her nose, nostrils are not attractive and this makes your subject look up at the lens, which is more appealing. This type of angle will also help thin out their face slightly.

I have very recently been faced with a similar lens quandary after getting my 5D3. Also coming from a crop body, the advantages of the FF and AF of the 5D3 made my 40D much less fun/useful to use.

Before the 5D3 I had a 70-200 f2.8L, 50 f1.2L and a 16-35 f2.8L. After using the 5D3 for about a month I sold the 2 zooms and replaced them with a 135 f2L, 300 f4L and 24 f1.4 L. The primes are beautiful. The 135 in particular is my favorite with the 5D3. I do not miss the zooms. Especially when I review the results from the primes.

As for the 5D2, I have not used one, but from reading here and other blogs, I would caution you that performance will be different in the 5D2.

Also, if weddings are a significant rt of your work, losing the zoom may result in you losing shots. Th ability to quickly adapt to once in a lifetime scenarios that often unfold at a wedding could be more difficult (though more beautifully) to capture with the 135 prime.

With the 24-105L you have a great travel lens. If you like L glass then rent or buy the 14L for your trip. It is effectively a 22mm on the 7D.

The EFS10-22 is very good, not L, but solid and excellent as an ultra wide on a crop sensor body.

I have the...
24-105 f/4 L
17-40 f/4 L
Sigma 85mm 1.4

Based on the lenses you have and budget consciousness, consider the 70-200 f4 or 70-200 f2.8 (non IS).

If you are not shooting macro, your 85 is fine in place of the 100 2.8. The 135 f2 is amazing, but the reach is too close to your 105. The 200 f2.8 would b a better choice. But your preference for zooms, get one of the more economical 70-200

We know you are using a FF camera, but it would be helpful to know what lens you are using now and how satisfied you are with the results it provides.

Lenses / Re: Lens suggestions for 3 weeks trip to Egypt and Jordan
« on: October 21, 2012, 08:14:08 AM »
Egypt will offer a variety of venues both wide and narrow. The 24-105 is a great all purpose lens, the kind of lens, if you only carry one, its the one to have.

I am surprised by your comments that the 15-85 on the Rebel performed better than the 24-105 on the 5DII. Technically speaking, this shouldn't be the case as the 24-105 is sharper. Focus adjust or lens adjust may be needed.

That being said, the 17-40 performs similarly to the 24-105, but with quite a bit more vingeting on a FF body. Remember, the 18-85mm on your Rebel gave you an effective focal length of 28-135mm; the 24 should be plenty wide for what you are use to.

If you prefer to travel light and focus time with your family, take just the 24-105 and leave it on your camera (no dust). You could include the 50 1.4 for low light situations (interior/evening) as needed! but, the 50 1.4 is not weather sealed like the zoom. A good clear filter (like the B&W with MRC) for the 24-105 is worthwhile for added protection from the elements.

What a great opportunity you have. As you consider your future equipment, do not discount your current equipment too quickly.

From your, “what I have now” and “dispose of” lists, I suggest keeping everything except the 28-135 and 35; a second body is often useful, keep it.

From your, “lust” and “end up with” lists, the 24-70 coupled with the 5DIII makes an excellent base to build on. If you really find yourself wanting to control perspective then add a Tilt/Shift lens, otherwise, your 17-40 should suit you just fine. Rather than adding a telephoto zoom, I suggest adding the 135 f2L (keeping the 200 f2.8 as well). This will complement your mid range zoom very well and each of these lenses will give you stunning sharpness and bokeh that the f4 zoom cannot touch.

So what would you do with the extra $1,000?

Consider the 100 f2.8L Macro
