Sending this eval lens back a few weeks ago was difficult.  That said, I ordered my own today.

The Cam Ranger is what you need.  I use it on the sidelines of football games to get the pics instantly to my iPad.  I also use it with live view to shoot macro.  You can also adjust the camera settings remotely and choose focus points. It's a very useful to tool and I have not yet used it to it's full potential.   And no, you do not need a network.  The Cam Ranger uses is own generated ad hoc network to connect to my iPad or iPhone.

I'd head out to the garage and fire up the acetylene torch.

Technical Support / Re: What kind of photo printer do you use?
« on: December 09, 2014, 11:19:10 PM »
I for one can't justify the cost.  I have everything I want printed by MPIX.  Very good prints, fast turnaround, and great service.  I recently had an order with 3 prints that just didn't look right to me. A quick e-mail discussing what I needed with the print, they re-printed them and they were on the way to me the same day, no charge.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: EOS 7D Mark II Body In Stock at B&H Photo

I got my "body only" from Crutchfield 3 weeks ago.  I looked at B&H first, but no stock.  Same thing happened when I bought my 5d Mk III body, it came from Crutchfield as well. Crutchfield is a very overlooked dealer for bodies and lenses.  They don't carry all of them, but they have a decent selection.

If you are attracted to the 300 2.8ii and plan to use it with converters most of the time, the 400 2.8 is to heavy and to expensive for you, then maybe you should try the 500 4.0. This one is not so much more expensive and will have better AF and better IQ at 500 than the 300 at 420 and 600. It will be a better 700mm with extender than the 300mm with 2x and a compromised 1000mm with no or poor AF

My two main uses for this lens will be sideline football and birds/wildlife.  From experience with others I know, a 500 is too long for football. I can believe this as I found that I rarely used my prior 100-400 at 400 on the sidelines. Also, that extra stop of light is critical to me for night games.  So, a 500 would limit its use to just birds/wildlife for now.  I'm thinking about buying the 300 and a couple years down the road adding a 600.  Extenders will give me reach on the 5d, and I an gain even more reach with my 7d II for birds. I haven't shot anything yet with the 300 and 7d II.

I'm really glad I borrowed one of these before committing to the 400mm.  This one fits the bill just fine and will save me some cash and be lighter to pack around.

Lenses / Really bad GAS
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:23:24 PM »
The GAS is so bad today that I thought I needed to call a gastroenterologist!  The pain started when I received my Canon evaluation loan today, a 300mm f/2.8L II.  The attached x-rays, I mean pictures, summarize the pain.  The image, in both full and cropped version, was shot right out of the shipping box on a 5d III with a 1.4x teleconverter.  I have been looking hard at a 400mm f/2.8 II, but I do believe this prescription, I mean lens, may take care of my GAS for a while.  A lot of money, probably more than it would cost to check out normal gas symptoms by the gastroenterologist.  But, this lens will be a lot more fun than a colonoscopy, so well worth the $$.

Software & Accessories / Re: BG-E16 an ergonomic disaster?

Anyone have any idea/opinion whether an L plate (RRS) for a Gripped 5D3 would fit on a Gripped 7D2? The grips look pretty close. I don't use it all that much. It would be nice if I could use it for both.

Call RRS and ask, but it's pretty doubtful.  There are almost always subtle shape changes, and the RRS plates are custom fit.

Yes, I suppose it's a long-shot. Guess I'll wait until RRS does their thing and then I'll see. Given the weight I guess it has to fit pretty snug on the grip side. Great, another gadget to keep track of. Just what I need.

Nope, it won't work.  I was hoping to be able to use it on both as well.  I have the RRS L plate for my 5d Mk III and it will not work on my new gripped 7d Mk II.  I think they plan those slight changes to help the aftermarket sales!

You'll get used to the ergonomics. I have the grip on my 5d Mk III and the new 7d Mk II.  They both feel very much the same and the newly added 7d II was very easy.  It took me a little while when I got the grip on the 5d III, but now it's all just second nature.

Lovely shot nonac. It's beautiful with the snow.

Thanks.  I really like shooting birds in the snow.  Adds something magical to the photo.

7D MK II Sample Images / Re: Anything Shot with a 7D MII
« on: November 11, 2014, 01:47:54 AM »
A couple football pics from Friday night on a poorly lit field.  JPEGs from the camera with slight editing and minor cropping in Lightroom (be glad when the raw converter is updated since that is what I shoot most of the time).  Happy with the result.  Shot these with a 70-200 2.8L II.

A couple bird pics from today.  JPEGs from the camera with slight editing and major cropping in Lightroom.  Happy with the result.  Going to test the focus and adjust tomorrow for all of my glass.  Shot these with a 70-200 2.8L II with a 1.4x III extender.
