Technical Support / 24mm adapter ring
« on: February 07, 2015, 11:15:29 PM »
I discovered today that my Lee Filters 77mm adapter ring will not screw onto my Canon 24mm f/1.4.  Neither will my 77mm B&W circular polarizer.  Both work fine on my 24-105 and 70-200 and thread in quickly and easily.  Has anyone else had this issue with the 24mm?  I guess I need to send it in to Canon because I sure don't want to force something that could lead to greater problems. The lens is still under warranty and it's never been dropped.

Technical Support / Grand Canyon panoramas
« on: December 28, 2014, 09:42:16 PM »
I will be shooting some single row, and possibly multiple row panoramas in a couple of months during a 3 day visit to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.  I am looking ahead as to what lenses I might use for this.  Has anyone used the 100mm f/2.8L macro or the 135mm f/2L for stitched panoramas, and if so how well did they work for that? Thanks.

Lenses / Really bad GAS
« on: November 19, 2014, 08:23:24 PM »
The GAS is so bad today that I thought I needed to call a gastroenterologist!  The pain started when I received my Canon evaluation loan today, a 300mm f/2.8L II.  The attached x-rays, I mean pictures, summarize the pain.  The image, in both full and cropped version, was shot right out of the shipping box on a 5d III with a 1.4x teleconverter.  I have been looking hard at a 400mm f/2.8 II, but I do believe this prescription, I mean lens, may take care of my GAS for a while.  A lot of money, probably more than it would cost to check out normal gas symptoms by the gastroenterologist.  But, this lens will be a lot more fun than a colonoscopy, so well worth the $$.

Canon General / CPS loan returns
« on: October 31, 2014, 09:06:28 PM »
For those of you that have borrowed equipment from CPS for evaluation, I have a question.  I have a loaner scheduled in a couple weeks and today I noticed the return date is Thanksging Day (U.S. Holiday so no FedEx, UPS, etc deliveries).  I have borrowed from CPS before, but I've never had a return date fall on a holiday.  Will CPS be ok with it arriving on the day after or do I need to ship it sooner so that it gets there the day before?  Thanks.

Sports / 2014 High School Sports
« on: August 31, 2014, 05:24:53 PM »
Its that time of year when High School sports here in the U.S. really start to get busy.  Here are a few pics from a football game last night.  All shot with a 5d Mk III and 70-200 f/2.8L II.

Sports / Dirt car racing
« on: August 12, 2014, 06:13:47 PM »
Last weekend I was at the Knoxville (IA) Nationals 410 Sprint Car races.  Four days of the best sprint cars in the world after the $150,000 to the overall winner.  1200 pound cars with 900hp on a 1/2 mile dirt track with average lap speeds of approximately 125mph.  These were shots from the infield during time trials.  The air was so humid that it was creating contrails from the wings of the cars when they were at top speed which you can see in some of these shots.  All of these were shot with my 135mm f/2 on a 5d MkIII.  ISO was 3200-6400, apertures f/2-2.8, and shutter speeds were 500-640.

Photography Technique / Myrtle Beach, SC
« on: June 28, 2014, 03:41:29 PM »
Since there has been a few travel questions of late, I thought I would throw mine in there.  I'm headed to Myrtle Beach, SC in a couple weeks.  Suggestions on photo opportunities in the area that I should not miss?  I like shooting landscape, macro, and wildlife. Thanks.

Technical Support / Lightboxes, umbrellas, stands, etc.........
« on: March 03, 2014, 05:37:31 PM »
I haven't done much flash photography at all and this is the year I've decided to delve into it.  I recently acquired 3-600EX-RT flashes and the ST-E3-RT transmitter.  I've been playing around with them and will be taking a Canon Sponsored class on their use in my area in May.  The thing I need now is flash stands, umbrellas and/or light boxes, etc. to use with them.  I plan to use my flashes primarily for fill for indoor and outdoor portraits.  I will also use them to add light to macro shots that I take, indoor and outdoor as well.  I have no idea where to begin with the purchase of the aforementioned items.  Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Lenses / Big whites
« on: November 14, 2013, 07:02:20 PM »
Why doesn't Canon ever offer rebates on the big whites as they do other lenses? There is most likely as much if not more of a profit margin in them making it very feasible to do. I guess it may be because they figure if you can afford that much, a $500 or more rebate won't stop you from buying it? I've often wondered about this because I don't think I've ever seen rebates on big whites.

5D MK III Sample Images / NHRA
« on: September 27, 2013, 10:45:48 PM »
I'm at an NHRA event for the very first time.  Rather challenging.  The car in this pic was probably doing 250+ mph when it passed me as it accelerated to around 312 within a couple hundred more yards.  Tough to pan and get tack sharp images, especially after dark.  Shot with a 5d Mk3, 70-200 2.8L II, 70mm, ISO 10,000, 1/1250 sec, f4.5. I normally shoot RAW, but I forgot that I had shot some images in JPEG yesterday and forgot to set it back to RAW. this image was straight from the camera with minor cropping.

Software & Accessories / Cam Ranger
« on: June 20, 2013, 10:06:15 PM »
I am seriously considering the purchase of a CamRanger with the primary purpose for macro photography so I'm not crawling around on the ground so much (tough to do with rhuematoid arthritis sometimes). For those of you that have a CamRanger and have used it for macro shots, give me your thoughts on it (pros and cons).  My secondary use would be for some time lapse shots ( up to as many as 500 or so) using the intervalometer.  I've read some comments regarding a short battery life for time lapse work.   I'm having a tough time pulling the trigger for $300 unless its real worth it.

5D MK III Sample Images / Aerial photos, balloons, planes, and others
« on: February 15, 2013, 05:10:42 PM »
Had not seen a topic with a subject such as this so I thought I would start one with a couple of images I snapped today.  These are two pics of a USAF A-10 "Warthog" as it was doing practice bombing and strafing runs on ground targets.  I only had a few minutes to snap shots (it was very cold and windy and I wasn't at all dressed for it) and I'm looking forward to going back at some point in the future to shoot some more.

Software & Accessories / CamRanger?

Has anyone used one of these, and if so, what to you think of it?  You can view a short video of its use on their website,
