I have a Nikon Coolscan V that I've had for 10-12 years. Excellent piece of equipment for slides and negatives. They no longer make them; however, you may be able to locate a good used one for a good price.  Mine was about $600 new, 10-12 years ago.

I wish they were red.  I just got home from Washington, D.C., where I spent several nights out and about shooting monuments and buildings. The black point made it more difficult in certain situations.

I've shot a couple of low light concerts in an amphitheater with my 5d Mk 3 and used manual set shutter and aperture with auto ISO. This helped immensely because of the changing lighting conditions.

From shooting some indoor sports, i.e. volleyball and basketball, I found that f/2.8 wasn't enough. I bought a 135 f/2 and that full stop made a lot of difference.  I am now able to keep the ISO no higher than 6400 and keep the shutter speed I need to stop the action.  It is really dependent on the noise you can tolerate and what you will be photographing.

I hope that the new sensor is really innovative to be that size.  I can't see much in the way of noise improvement with a sensor that size in APS-C format. I will be buying one if these specs are close, along with an improvement in noise reduction at higher ISO.

I have a 70-200 f2.8L II which I bought to primarily shoot indoor sports, ie volleyball, basketball, wrestling, etc..  While it is ok in some situations, it is not fast enough in most.  I recently purchased the 135 f/2 and wow, what a difference that extra full stop makes. I am shooting on a full frame body; however, in your case you will have a little more reach. That is easily solved by moving around until you find the best shot to shoot from. I take shots from various locations in the gym every time I shoot.

Leaving for Washington, DC for two weeks, never been there before Most of my photo opportunities will be at night. I'll be taking a 5d III, 24-105, 135, and a 70-200 2.8 II. Plus tripod, remote release, no flash. Any suggestions for good spots to shoot on the National Mall or any other areas?  Thanks

I had the exact situation about 3 months ago. Had a 40d and wanted to upgrade. I ended up going with the 5D III. I couldn't even pick up my 40d after that and ended up selling it.  I'm now waiting for the next hi level crop body to complement the 5d; however, I don't know if it will be able to. I shoot wildlife as well and the low light ability of the III alone, in my opinion, far outweighs the loss in reach with the crop body, not to mention other great attributes such as the focusing.

You just have to keep an eye out for deals. I bought it about this time last year from B&H on a deal that lasted only one or two days. I got it for $1,974.

I have the 70-200 2.8. II and just bought the 135 about 3 weeks ago. They both serve specific purposes for me. The 135 is great for indoor sports, ie basketball and volleyball where the action is not too spread out. Get some great net shots in volleyball. The 70-200 works better outside on the sidelines of football and soccer games.  The bokeh on the 135 is amazing, even on some if my indoor sports shots. I am glad I bought it.

I also like the low-light ability.  Have gotten keepers that I could not have dreamed of with the old 40d.

I really like the Lowepro toploaders. Get the Lowepro belt and build the system you need. You can add to it or take away from it depending on the shooting situation you are planning to do.

Doesn't really matter. It will be months before you ever see one. What happened to the 200-400 that was all over the place at the Olympics? Pictures of it in the wild emerged a long, long time ago and nothing to be said.

It still doesn't matter, months pass even after they are announced.  How long ago was the 500 and 600 II's announced?  They have only recently started becoming available.  Don't hold your breath with Canon, it will drive you crazy.

Glad I grabbed a 135 f/2 a couple of days ago for $879.  It's $989 now.
