Lenses / 100mm 2.8 vs 85mm 1.8

Okay guys... i'm about to pull the trigger on a new lens for my portrait work, the Canon 85 1.8.  Cheap, excellent sharpness, fast...  And then my boss (wife) asks me... what can this lens do that our 100 2.8 CANT do.  I've done a lot of self research and i'm sold.  While I would love to get the 85 1.2, that's just not in our cards and budget at this moment.  I often shoot in tight places and to be able to blur the background just a smidge more (less photoshop work for me) is very attractive as to reduce our downtime, plus it will give us more wiggle room with framing not being AS tight.  Now here is where I need your help guys... those who have both lenses, had both lenses, or similar lenses, what i'm looking for is kind of a side by side portrait showing the 85 at 1.8-2 and the 100 at 2.8...  a nearer background 2-3 feet is ideal for this purpose... help me sell this lens to my wife...  Yeah yeah i know the common answer will be to rent one and let her see, but to be honest, the nearest place i can rent a lens is a few hours away and to have one shipped out, well lets just say i'm hoping you guys can help first...  Ok... Ready... Go!

Canon General / PPA and Insurance

Ok.... So here's my conundrum...  I work with a large agency doing professional photography, as well as portrait photography on the side... I currently work around 60-80 hours a week and it's very taxing... i currently get my insurance and benefits from the agency i'm with.  I was approached by another individual to start our own agency...  potentially a lot more money, freedom, and get to do what i like to do when I want to do it, and no more 60-80 hours a week working... sounds great right?  Well while all the logistics is fairly reasonable and we are ironing everything out, the one thing that could be a big monkey wrench is healthcare, especially with the new obamacare rules and regs.  so... we were looking at options and from what we can see from the "marketplace" the insurances are outrageous in premiums, no where near what we are paying now, but what can we do.   We saw that as a benefit of the PPA, professional photographers of america, they have access to a broker who does insurance.  Has anyone used them?  Are they cheaper than other options?  Although i shoot professionally, i've never seen a need or a desire to join the PPA as i find that it's mostly pomp and circumstance and gladhanding and such.  I find selling a picture more rewarding than winning an award from some competition judged by people i dont know using rules that may be questionable with agendas up the wazoo... BUT... if their insurance is worth the cost of yearly membership and such, maybe it could be an option.  Have any of you guys tried this out?  I would be interested in hearing your opinions.  Thanks

Ok...  After consulting in getting my studio more efficient, I was recommended that we get a wireless transfer of images from my 5d3 to my computer to streamline that process.  We looked at the Canon Wifi module for the 5d3, it was nearly $900, too rich for my blood.  So next question is, how good are the eye-fi cards now after the last update Canon had to make them streamlined?  How stable are they?  Do they break/fail often?  Any other suggestions I'm missing or options or 3rd party wifi devices?

Third Party Manufacturers / radio poppers with a 5d3

Okay guys... Here's my question... I have studio strobes... I would like a cheap radio popper to trigger them... dont need TTL or focus assist or radio or anything like that as it doesn't matter with studio strobes... doesn't need anything fancy... but I do have a 5d3, which I have heard has caused problems with other triggers in certain situations... Any suggestions?

Ok, we have a slight issue here...  With my new 5d, I have noticed it attracts dust on the mirror/LCD almost every time I change lenses...  Never was an issue with my 7d or 5d2 or prior cameras.  Anywho today I took a canon brand rocket blower today to knock out the dust and looked into to viewfinder to find 2 small streaks in the scene. After looking around it was the plastic screen above the mirror assembly. I took a dry clean anti static cloth...  Nope...  Tried blowing warm air on it (like you would glasses) and wiping thoroughly, looked clean but streaks were still there. Ok, seriously annoyed now I get rubbing alcohol and qtips and lightly clean it...  That's when things started taking a turn for the worst...  I start getting a faint circle outline and more streaks, as if by doing so is removing some coating on the underside of the plastic. Anywho after trying to clean it as best as I could, looking through the VF has a large circle outline that extends from the top to the bottom of the screen perfectly around the center "spot" circle in the middle, and various imperfections in areas...  Basically the top plastic in front of the transmissive LCD is going to have to be fixed/replaced. Anyone had any issues like this with maybe the 7d or 5d3?  Looking through the VF is saddening, AF and the actual transmissive part appears perfectly fine, and photo is perfect as always...  Any suggestions before I prepare to get raped my canons repair services?

I'm sure these have been covered to death in other forums or blogs or whatever, but hopefully someone will find some use out of it...

#1  there is no more dedicated question for expandable ISO on or off...  The other day I was shooting a pro model to bolster her portfolio and mine, and I was outside, late afternoon, shooting with off-camera flash, with the sync speed stuck at 1/200...  I wanted shallow(er) DOF so I really didn't want to go beyond f8 if i could help it.  I didn't have any neutral density and I only needed to go down 1 stop from ISO 100... so ISO 50 fit the bill... Every camera with expandable ISO i've ever shot with had a simple yes or no, on or off expandable ISO and viola, all the extra ISO's magically unlock.  This camera in the ISO settings allow you to manually select which is the lowest ISO setting you wish to use and what is the highest.  For some reason my brain thought that was to do with AUTO iso settings, but that controls expandable ISO's as well.  Also to access min shutter speeds for auto ISO, it's in the ISO menu as well.

#2  Talking about menu's, it is totally different...  A lot is the same but a lot is different.  Same feel as the 7D and 5d2 menu's but a lot of reshuffling, a lot of options bundled together in submenu's and such... take time to get use to it.  If you really dont get used to it, it can get weird very quickly. 

#3  AF look, feel, and customization is a lot like the 7d.  I noticed there are a lot of 5d2 and 1d series guys picking up the 5d3 and having problems with the AF, black dots, etc... but coming from a 7D background, it's almost identical except more points and a 9 point cluster... Easy to pick up from in that case. 

#4  There is no mention in the top LCD for image save method (jpeg L or RAW)...  That was one of the only reasons I ever used the top LCD and to see how many approx shots I have left to a card.  The jpeg/raw/both setting is no longer present in the top LCD and you have to actually go into the menu to find it.  Also another quick access menu that was buried deep within the main menu is shooting styles.  99% of the time I never use it or set it and forget it, but the menu buttons in the back doesn't provide a quick one press access to it.  Of course I set it (for whatever jpegs I decide to shoot) so I likely will not touch that menu for the remainder of my days unless I need a saturation boost for whatever reason, but that's neither here nor there, but likely in that situation I may shoot raw..

#5 speaking of raw, developing in DPP with a 16bit tiff raw, you are getting around 110MB files give or take.  Developing in 8bit is smaller, but just to think, lets say you develop 10 of those puppies, that's over a gig of HD space right there... 100 of those is over 10 gigs...  600 (typical wedding photographer on average) and your looking around 60 gigs if not more.  Just something to chew on...  I can only imagine the damage the D800 would do to my HD plus extra workflow but that's another topic for another day.

#6  HDR  I love the idea of it...  I never really heard it really explained or saw videos of it but always hear that it does a good job handholding... I kinda thought they meant they handheld it and manually fired 3 consecutive shots... nope... set its perimeters, set the scene up, and click the shutter once and the camera rapid fires 3 shots back to back to back without you even thinking of it.  I've got to play around with it, but for those down and dirty quick HDR shots for lets say real estate shots, especially on tripods...  If done right and with a big enough bracket, it could be a time saver right there...  Still need to play around with it and i'm skeptical on how it would handle on a 180 or 360 pano head with HDR, but for a 1 shot application, it's promising. 

#7  body...  I've heard that it's like full frame version of the 7d.  The 7d when I first got it, I was slightly turned off because it was so sculpted.  It was very masculine on how sculpted the grip was, where the MFN button and dial wheel was, where the card door holder protruded in the palm of my hand.  The card door boobage is still there, but it feels more comfortable (either that or my hand is more used to it).  The camera doesn't look or feel as sculpted but more natural and curvaceous.  It just feels more comfortable in the hand overall.  The grip feels deeper albeit ever so slightly so my fingers when wrapped around touch the body ever so slightly and comfortably.  On the 7d, for whatever reason my fingers ran out of real estate in the grip causing the knuckles to buckle a bit and kind of made my hand cramp up quicker (and i've got short fingers, so that says something).  The body just feels right in my hands, no guarantees for those with longer fingers though.  Anyways Good luck to those who have or are getting the 5d3 and hope to have some photos to you guys soon.

Okay guys... another brainstorm topic...  This sunday, 6:28 Pacific Daylight Time, we are expected to be getting a total solar eclipse.  This was the the first time since like 1994 since north America has had a solar eclipse that was visible.  So.... We know looking at it with our naked eye can screw up your eye, and given that, photographing it without filters, logically, can screw up your sensor.  If lasers can cause damage to sensors,  surely this would be as bad... I have a gel filter of the old IR filters, I think it was 87C that we used with infrared film and black and white?  Anyone have any insight whether this would be a safe alternative for this type of photography?  I just dont want to burn out my camera or cause any damage.  Thanks.

Okay guys... dont know if this has been posted but here it goes..  I'm not an indie film maker, I have no ambitions on making anything fancy or do anything over the top, but what i'm looking for is a good quality low cost mic system, whether it be a hot shoe mic, or something else.  The cheaper mics, including the onboard mic, always seems to have a slight hiss... You can tune that down but then you tune down the overall volume as well (5d)...  I want a mic that gives ok audio with little to no hiss, but one that wont break the bank.  I know there are the cheapie $30 variety on ebay and also know they get into the thousands, which I dont want to get into.  If a person is speaking i want to hear them clearly, but no hiss.  It can be made with fisher price grade plastic for all I care, just a good recording device with a decent price

Claims are this claymation style movie was shot with 50 1d mark 3's at a tune of over 1 million photos.  I suppose the math adds up, 50 1d's though to shoot it all would put a dent in the pocketbook however it's sure cheaper than cost of actors I suppose.

I personally am not bothered by it, but I remember a few days ago people wanted to know about the mirror blackout time for the new 5d Mark 3.  I dont know if anyone ever found it out, but I came across

in their interview with Chuck Westfall, he discloses "Shutter lag time is 59 milliseconds, the same as the EOS 7D, and considerably faster than the EOS 5D Mark II’s 73 milliseconds. Viewfinder blackout time is 112 milliseconds on the EOS 5D Mark III vs. 145 milliseconds on the EOS 5D Mark II."

Canon General / Large Prints

I know this topic is a sensitive issue with some photographers, and each has their own techniques on how they do this, so I'm just curious how each of you handle this topic.  I was trained and brought up in the early digital age that the magic resolution to print at was 300DPI and common acceptance was that you could always reduce an image file with little to no image quality loss, BUT, enlarging an image was questionable your basically making up information that isn't there.  I know and have seen people take photos from a 5d mark 2, 7d's, 50d's and even the 40 and 30D's and print 20x30's or larger.  What is YOUR technique to do such prints given that the 5d mark 2 native resolution when converted at 300DPI is only 13"x19" or the 7D's resolution is roughly 11"x16".  Do you interpolate the file so they are that size @300 DPI?  If so what program do you use?  Do you print at 150 DPI?  Have some other method?  Me personally I try never to print below 240DPI and if I need to, then I interpolate my image in photoshop.  What do you do to your files?

Canon General / Tiffen DFX V3 anyone?

Hey guys... not that i'm looking for any guinna pigs or anything, but I stumbled across this software package and was wondering if anyone has used it, especially in it's latest version, 3?  From what I gather, it has just about any filter you could every wish to have in your bag, can stack filters, without worrying about stops less light like you would with the filters on camera, you can dial in the opacity of the filters, customize the effect of each filter, etc... Sounds like an incredible package (and prevent me getting any more gray hair worrying if I have my polarizer with me on a shoot or gradiant or whatever... )  Plus I wouldn't have to worry about spending $150 on a top of the line filter that wouldn't degrade my image...

But drawbacks... How are the final outputs?  Does it add noise where noise wouldn't be there otherwise?  How are the quality of files?  Does it have any inherent softening or such (other than the use of diffusion filters in the software package or such)...  Before i get too excited or ahead of myself I just wanted to check with you guys if any of you guys have played with this or similar software (stand-alone or plug-in) and what results you had.  YES i expect to be able to print full resolution if not bigger with the resulted images so if there's any degradation of image file, It would be apparent.
