Lenses / Re: Buying a used lens from Adorama

Or think of it this way, if you buy a new off the shelf body or lens maybe 1 in 1,000 has any type of QA check done to it.  Refurb units have someone go through the entire unit and make sure it is functional and you still get the same full warranty.  I've bought a body and two lenses and you'd never know they weren't fresh out of the box.  Never had an issue with them.  I'm not sure how much QA goes into Adorama's used gear (maybe if Helen Oster is around she can answer that).

Software & Accessories / Re: ProDot Shutter Button Upgrade

I got some early prototypes when I ordered a c-loop (which I really like) and they didn't stick for very long.  One came off first time I took my 7d out of my camera bag.  The one on my 5D came off after about 30 shutter activation's in warm summer weather.  Unless they fix the adhesive and make the price a lot more attractive (I've got experience with mold costs) and change their shipping methods I don't see these taking off.

I bought the HyperDrive ColorSpace and just added my own harddrive, much cheaper that way and I love it.  Good battery life, fairly quick at viewing .CR2 files.  Just an extra piece of mind when I'm out shooting and don't have time or can't get to my laptop to backup my files right away.

Landscape / Re: Antelope Canyon, AZ Recommendations?

Hi all.

I am still on for Canyon X, in Page, AZ in November.  I have 2 days reserved. I also have a rental car and about 5 days to play with my camera gear.  Does anyone have any suggestions of places to go for great photo ops?

Great pics and info.

Thanks.

Scott

Scott,
I was out in the canyon areas in June and they were beautiful and crowded.  One word of advice I'd offer is due to the the heavy floods in August of this year contact your tour provider and ask about the condition of canyon X.  I've had a few friends tell me that it was very hard hit with mud from the flooding so make sure it's accessible since it's a bit of a drive to get there from Page and I would hate to see you get there and only be able to get into it for 20 feet.

50mm 1.8 I bought new in 1984 with my "Olympic Edition" AE-1 Program.  Still have the camera too ;)

It looks clean but I'd really like to do a set of L Series "big white whales" like this one.

I'm shooting from Horseshoe Bend tonight in Page Arizona, hopefully about 4:00 am if I can get up :).  Moon will set directly over the south bend of the shoe so if I'm lucky I'll have a good shot or two.   Shooting wide with a 5d ii and 17-40 and long with a 100-400 on a 7d.

Canon Refurb   :D

http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_10051_10051_309850_-1

and if you have another old canon laying around you can see if you can get the Canon Loyalty Program (866)-443-8002 (call them for details) to kick in more of a discount off the refurb price.  It's still got a 90 day warranty with Canon and since it's a backup/secondary camera I think it would suit your needs quite well.

I looked at the revolver but went with the PL-220 http://www.kata-bags.us/bumblebee-220-pl-for-2-pro-dslr-up-to-8-lenses-500mm and I love it.  Carry a gripped 5D MK ii with Kirk L bracket and a 135 F2 mounted, a 7D with a 100-400 mounted, a 24-70 MK i, a 50 1.4 and 2 flash heads in it with extra room to spare.  Pack is very well made and not bad to hike around with for a couple of hours with it on your back.

DPP, adjusted white balance and exposure, upped vibrance and contrast a bit, adjusted layers and cropped a small part.  Gorgeous animals.
