EOS Bodies / Why are flash sync shutter speeds getting worse?
« on: September 24, 2012, 09:21:05 AM »
As a 60d shooter was looking forward to the 6d entry level ff I was hugely disappointed by just the additional 2 af points and 1/180th fash sync.   Came across this good comparison page regarding flash syncs

http://www.photographe-mariages.net/blog/20120404/vitesse-de-synchronisation-par-appareil-photo/

Why do the 60d, 50d, and 7d have a faster flash sync than the 5d mark ii and iii and the 6d?????

I'm holding off to see how the 7d mark ii shakes out now.  the 6d doesn't impress me and the 5d mark iii is too much.

Just got home and haven't dove thru the 25+ pages of messages on this topic....but as a 60d shooter hoping to upgrade to full frame by Christmas I am extremely disappointed with the 6d.  Namely, just the 11 points of af and the 1/180th flash sync.   How the 60d has 1/250th flash sync and the 5d mark iii has 1/200th and the 6d has 1/180th is just mindboggling.  I even notice a difference with the waving hands of my toddler using 1/180th vs 1/250th f;ash sync.

Couldn't have Canon at least given us 15 af points even if they didnt want to give us the full 19 af points of the 7d??????

I'll hope the 7d mark ii isnt as disappointing.

Lenses / Re: New Wide Angle Zoom Discussion & Opinion

The 17-40l is nine years old, wonder if that will have a ii version or similar replacement.   Just announce the 14-24 before mid November so I can get a Black Friday / Christmas deal on the 17-40!

Maybe I shouldnt use macro and closeup interchangeably.  I have the 50mm 1.8 and that is good for closeups (portraits, walk around, etc) but doesnt have a short enough minimum focusing distance to say photograph a 3"x5" index card "closeup".  I can photograph an index card or piece of paper with the 60mm but find myself having to step back or hover at an akward angle sometimes - thus my pondering the 50mm on a ff.  If that makes sense.....

I am fairly new to Canon Rumors but wanted some guidance from those shooters who upgraded from APS-C to Full Frame and what full frame macro lens they went with if they were shooting with the 60mm APS-C macro.  I have the 60d and used the 60mm macro for closeups the last 18 months.  The type of closeups I shot with the 60mm are babies feet, flowers, engagement rings/wedding ring type shots, and documents.

I plan to upgrade from the 60d to the 6d (or whatever the entry level full frame is called when it comes out) so I'll likely be getting rid of the 60mm since it's an ef-s.   I know the 100mm 2.8 is l macro would be best lens to go with on the full frame and that I've basically been shooting with a 100mm since the 60mm x 1.6 is 96mm equivalent.  However, I think I'll get the 17-40l (one of the reasons I am upgrading to ff is to get true wide angle / noncropped wide angle shots) first so the 100mm l isnt in my budget.  Therefore I'm considering the 50mm f2.5 macro (mainly because of it's great price of $279) or regular 100mm macro.

Questions:

1.) I've seen a few reviews that mention that the af on the 50mm macro is noisy...but is it so noisy/loud that it would disturb a quiet baby?

2.) What has been the experience of shooters using the 50mm on a APS-C body (just in case I end up keeping the 60d)?  On an APS-C the 50mm could serve as an 80mm equivalent when needed.

3.) What full frame macro lens did you select for full frame when upgrading from APS-C to full frame and why?

4.) If you have both the 50mm macro and 100mm macro do you find that you use them equally and for what kinds of shooting?  (I'm thinking that the only shot I would use the 50mm macro for is documents).

Thanks!

I have a 60d and have been looking to upgrade to a ff the past several months and am going to wait on this 6d opposed to getting a 5d ii.   Specs for the 6d look good and I don't mind if 6d has build of a 60d and lacks a magnesium alloy body.

One lingering point I'd like to make.  Going off today's price for 5d ii and 5d iii kits with 24-105l lens on b and h: the 24-105 is only $620 more than the 5d ii body and $835 more than the 5d iii body.  I hope canon sells the 24-105 as the kit lens with the 6d for around $700 extra above the price of the body but maybe that is too much to wish!   Thoughts?

I have the current version of the 100-400 and love it.  Am planning to get a 17-40 L and it's nice that the 17-40L, 100-400, (and 24-105 L for that matter) all take 77mm filters.  Something to consider, who knows when the newer version of the 100-400 is coming out - and if it does - what it's filter size will be.  I for one like the push / pull of the 100-400.  Even if a new version of the 100-400 would come out I think I'd invest my money in glass elsewhere rather than in the most recent model.

to get the price of the body down to $679.99 with free shipping....great deal in my opinion.  i didnt finalize checkout though.  hopefulyl this works.  I have the 60d and love it but will upgrade to the 7d mark ii, 6d, or 70d once we get some announcements.  Nonrefurb body is $899 on B+H and has been for about a month now.

I have the 60d and was contemplating an upgrade to the 7d but think I will hold off until the 7d mark ii gets released.  I'm not too pleased with the af on the 60d and hear the 19 points on the 7d is much much better.  However, I love the swivel screen on the 60d.   Do we think a 70d or 7d mark ii would have a swivel screen?   I hope the proposed 7d mark ii will keep the 19 point af and e-ttl wireless flash....
