I got rid of the Tupperware on my flashes a long time ago.

Lenses / Re: Are Primes really better for portraits?

I'm baffled by this. If you are shooting portraits at f4 and above and still not happy I don't think any amount of gear will solve your problem.

Lenses / What to do?
« on: September 18, 2012, 03:50:46 PM »
This is really more or less for fun as I am pretty sure what I am going to do.

New 5diii delivered today courtesy of the adorama eBay sale, thanks guys!  This leaves me in a pickle, I have no standard zoom for FF and $2500 burning a hole in my pocket.

So 24-70 ii, or 24-105 and 135 L?

Current FF compatible kit is, 28 1.8, 50 1.8, 70-200 f4 is. Suggestions are welcome.

I f you don't mind paying sales tax, assuming you are outside of ny, then you may have luck with your local camera shops. Their preorder lists shouldn't be as long and depending on their relationship with canon maybe they got a larger allocation. It's worth a shot.

Lenses / Re: Were EF-S lenses a bad idea?

In a word , no. It was a great boon for the consumer who wanted something more than their kit lens on aps c. Do I regret my 17-55 f2.8, not one bit. I should be able to sell that piece of kit for 80-90% of what I paid for it, or keep it and let the wife use it on a rebel or mirror less offering in the future. Either way it was worth the use I got out of it.

As a side note I picked up the 5d mark iii in the adorama eBay sale this weekend, delivered today, super pumped, got it charging in my office and may duck out a few hours early this afternoon.

Canon General / Re: Loving Canon right now.
« on: September 18, 2012, 12:13:37 AM »
Timely post. I love the fanboys on either side. They Keep the forum entertaining. Personally I am very happy with canon. I think there is more than "mega pickles" and dr. I fact I hate the ergonomics and weight of Nikon pro bodies. If you need the latest sensor tech from Sony go with one of their dslr's. They at least have in body IS.  if you go to nikon let me know how you like their 70-200 or 24-70, oh you want a 24-105, 50 1.2, 85 1.2, or really anything longer than 300 sorry no real options. A camera is more than the body. Sure canon r&d got hit by a Sony juggernaut. I suspect in a few years time all dslr's will use Sony senors simply because they can access an economy of scale canon cannot.

EOS Bodies / Re: 6D Review

Not that kr has much credibility left but all he is doing is a cut and paste job from his 5diii review probably so he can say he was first. What a crock.

EOS Bodies / Re: Adorama is selling 5d3 for $2745 on eBay now

Reselling mine on eBay as of Wednesday, taking offers at 3200 shipped anywhere in the lower 48 overnight.

Honestly this has more to do with the Jewish holiday. Adorama probably doesn't sell much between now and Tuesday night anyways they boost sales with this deal and don't offend canon because it's sold through their eBay store.

My biggest fear out of this deal is that the 6D sensor will wind up being of a stellar quality, something similar to the 18 MP of the 1D X and that Canon is dumping all the 5D III stock they know will stagnate once word gets out about the 6D sensor, but even then you are getting a top quality AF with an OK sensor. The last count at the Adorama X-mas in September fire-sale stands at 560, all these people couldn't be totally wrong.

If you want to stand on the fence so be it, 2800 with overnight shipping, no brainier in my mind. Be ready to be underwhelmed by the 6d (if it exists, I still don't think it does, and if it does you won't be able to have your hands on it till 2013)

Screaming deal!  I have been patiently waiting out a drop on the mark ii below 1800 but this throws a wrinkle in things. Time to take the wife to a nice dinner tonight and soften the blow.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Nikon vs Canon - Honest Poll before photokina.
« on: September 15, 2012, 01:17:57 AM »
Different strokes for different folks. My guess for most consumers or enthusiasts it comes down to what they currently use (or more than likely the brand of dslr they first bought). for pros, they know their tools and pick the one that suits them best. Sort of a pointless poll, but I get the fun in it.  Personally I don't like the ergonomics of Nikon so it's twice for canon for me.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: What to charge for wedding photography?
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:17:36 AM »
Maybe the biggest mistake the beginning photographer makes is underpricing the product. You have to understand that even when you are new your clients will be getting pictures they themselves could not reproduce with their point and shoots.  That has value to the.  The problem you then have is as the word gets out you do great work for pennies how do you then raise your price?  When I got started I checked the competition out and let's say for example they were charging an average of $200 for a session fee. So I began also charging $200 for a session fee but offered a discount of $50 for new clients or referrals and my ads had a specific end date to the deal (say 12/31). Then if i felt I needed to continue offering the discount I'd simply extend the special. That way when it came time to increase my prices I just removed the special. By then I had a good client base who was happy to pay market rate, and actually I ended up charging quite a bit more than my competition because my clients valued what I did. Honestly I wished the new photographer would just do work pro bono rather than undercutting the market because all you do is devalue the service provided or worse get yourself constantly doing more work than the job is worth.

Canon General / Re: Europe trip, 1-2 months
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:00:52 AM »
My personal favorites in Europe: Scotland (particularly the highlands) and Budapest

I know the 7D has it's detractors, but for me its a camera perfectly matched to where I'm at.

Sage words Paul. A camera is nothing more than a tool, there are good photos and bad photos. There are good photographers and mediocre photographers (I say mediocre because photography is highly subjective). I think too many people get caught up in gear collecting thinking a bad photo from a $25000 Leica is somehow intrinsically more valuable. I'm glad you have found the passion is in the photo not in the gear it's taken with.
