PowerShot / Re: Canon PowerShot D20

What was odd about the D10? It seems like a standard P&S in a water-sealed case?

At f/1.4 I'd imagine that getting the subject in focus is a greater cause of photo blur than camera steadiness. Any photo quicker than 1/200 seconds should not show image shake blur if you weren't moving when you took the shot, and that's being very generous. At f/1.4 in sunlight, I think you'd have trouble getting the shutter speeds of less than 1/1000 second.

Awesome shot, I love the colors there.

Lenses / Re: Canon 17-85mm vs. Tamron 17-50mm vs. Tamron 28-75mm
« on: January 21, 2012, 12:25:40 PM »
The Tamron 17-50. The focal length range is more useful than 28-75, it's constant f/2.8 and the reviews are favourable (see photozone.de). The Canon 17-85 is slower and isn't very highly regarded -- according to photozone the new kit lens (the 18-55) is better.

There are two different Tamron 17-50mm lenses, a VC (IS) version and a non-VC version. The non-VC version gets better reviews but you might prefer the VC version for filming.
Just my two cents, but I would take photozone's reviews with a large grain of salt. The sample photos he posts at the end of his reviews are really not very good photos in my opinion, so I have a hard time taking seriously the rest of the review.

Lenses / Re: How to solve the problem of LOOSE lens hoods?
« on: January 20, 2012, 08:01:13 PM »
Wrap a piece of scotch tape around the connecting rim of the hood. You only have to use about an inch of tape. That's about the extra thickness needed to tighten a loose hood, in my experience. I guess if yours is looser than that, use a thicker tape, such as electrical tape.

If your friend is selling the Canon 10-22 to you for $450, you'd be crazy to not go for that option.

I once backpacked for 6 months through hell and high water. My camera died on me one day -- an electronic failure. I just found a camera store and bought another.

I'd recommend doing the same. It's cheaper and lighter than insurance.

The Zeiss 21 is great.

The Zeiss 18 is just as great, but much slower. On paper, it's only 2/3 stop slower, but in use the vignetting on the 18mm is pretty severe -- enough to the point where you'll be wanting to shoot the lens at f/8 the whole time. Also the lens meters a 1/3 stop darker than Canon lenses.

I've personal experience with both these lenses, and IMO there are very good reasons the Zeiss 21 is more expensive, and those reasons are apertures faster than f/5.6.

If you're only ever shooting at f/8 or slower, then by all means go with the Zeiss 18.

Between the Zeiss 21/2.8 and the Zeiss 28/2, this 25/2 seems awfully redundant to me. Am I missing something?

The Canon auto-focuses and is a stop faster. The Zeiss can focus at 24cm whereas the Canon can only focus as close as 45cm. The focus plane on the Zeiss is flat, the Canon has a slightly curved field. And they look a lot different.

Oh my, the gear I've gone through over the years ... :( lament for sold gear

in approximate order:
* EF-S 18-55 (the original) - SOLD
* Tamron 70-300 (the 2004 version) - SOLD
* Sigma 10mm fisheye - SOLD
* 28-135 - SOLD and good riddance
* 24-70L - SOLD (I miss it)
* Nifty Fifty - SOLD (and then later purchased another)
* 135 Soft Focus - SOLD (outclassed by the 135L, although not to shabby itself)
* 70-300 DO - SOLD and never looked back
* EF 20mm - SOLD and not missed
* 70-200 f4L IS - SOLD because it's ostentatious
* 180L - SOLD because it weight a thousand pounds
* 85 f/1.8 - SOLD and slightly missed
* 28 f/1.8 - SOLD because it halates
* 50 f/1.4 - SOLD for greener pastures
* EF-S 18-135 - still got it! although I'll probably sell it soon
* EF 35-70 - SOLD because I don't know why I even bought this ancient thing
* 200 f/2.8L - SOLD in lieu of 135L
* 35 f/2 - SOLD and I sort of miss it
* 100 macro - SOLD and not missed
* Zeiss 2/50 - my baby <3
* 100 f/2 - SOLD and not missed
* 24L - on its way out the door
* 135L - still hanging on!
* Zeiss 18 - RETURNED within the 30 days (I'm learning!)
* Nifty fifty - not going to sell it this time
* 16-35L - on it's way here right now!
* 24-105L - will probably get this in a couple weeks

This list does not include rented or borrowed gear, which is also lengthy. I don't know why I've worked my way through half the Canon lens catalog over the years -- I mean, I know in my head that it's the photographer that makes the picture and NOT the gear. But for some reason I always feel limited by what I've got, and that if I just sell lens X to finance lens Y then I'll finally have the right gear for my shooting style.

On the flip side, I actually feel like my shooting style has evolved greatly over the years, and I've been good enough about selling what I no longer need that the gear I have tends to match my style at the time. I spent a long time in primes learning how to shoot and what works well at specific focal lengths, but now I'm coming back around to zooms just so I can have less stuff and focus more on composition and less on gear.

IMO, the most useful lens missing from everyone's line up is an EF-S 18mm f/1.8 lens.

I'm in the same spot -- have the Zeiss 2/50 makro-planar, but sometimes I just need auto-focus (usually around children).

I hemmed and hawed and ended up getting the nifty fifty. For $100, it's about the same price as a filter for the Zeiss, and it's tiny and practically weightless, so I don't have gear bloat.

I already had a great 50, so why bother wasting money on another top-of-the-line 50?

Just another voice seconding trying out the 70-200 more thoroughly before upgrading. The 70-200 isn't shy.
