EOS Bodies / 5D3 settings changing!
« on: June 11, 2013, 08:55:29 AM »
My 5D3 has been switching from RAW/RAW to JPEG with battery changes. I use both Canon and 3rd party. Anyone else having this issue?

Lenses / Lenses for WDW
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:16:29 PM »
I'll be going to WDW the end of this summer for my family's first time. I've been to DLand over 30 times and know what to bring there but when you factor in Epcot, Animal Kingdom etc I thought I might ask some seasoned pros. I would probably like to bring 2 lenses (maybe 3 tops) and one would be a 70-200 for the Animal stuff.

Here's what I have:
16-35
24-105
40
50
100 Macro
70-200 2.8

Thanks

Lenses / Really, I did a Google search and came up with nada
« on: February 26, 2013, 09:12:51 PM »
5d3, Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC.

Can I use a Canon 1.4 TC III with this lens?

I cannot find out if Canon tc's are compatible with 3rd Party EOS lenses anywhere. Of course there's a grundle of info about 3rd party TC's on Canon lenses.

Thanks

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Recommendations for a friend
« on: January 27, 2013, 09:33:47 PM »
My friend is interested in moving into a DSLR from the high end P&S world. She is not interested in a kit lens or a slow tele (55-250). I have shown her what a pancake is capable of and she has it on her short list along with the nifty 50 as well. She has borrowed a T2i in the past and is comfortable with the ergonomics and menus.

Video is not a concern but if it's there well bonus. She is shooting product stills for her furniture biz, family portraits, candids and vacation pix. Nothing where much more than 135 on a crop is needed. Here is the list I've shared with her for her options below $800.

Used:

T3i (9+ B&H) and 40 pancake $600
same with  50 1.8 $560
50D (EX+ Keh) and 40 pancake $615
same with 50 1.8 $575

New:

T3i body and pancake $679

Highest suggested
T3i and 18-135 $819

Any suggestions of which of these to go for or something I haven't mentioned?

EOS Bodies / What Canon Body is threatened buy the Nikon D5200?
« on: January 08, 2013, 07:47:17 AM »
Except for the low ISO range is the newly announced D5200 a competitor to the T4i or the 7D? I see it as an upgrade to old D90 users but it must have a Canon rival now doesn't it?

6
So in assisting a friend search for new lenses on her D90 I advised her to check out some decent economical fast Nikon primes. These are crop only lenses akin to EF-s for Canon. I am curious as to why Canon hasn't tapped this market. I really like the Nikkor 35mm 1.8 DX for a 'normal lens on her D90. Kind of Nikon's equivalent to a Nifty Fifty.

But to tell the truth, as a lifetime Canon user, other than owning a Nikon film camera in the 80's it was my first foray into shopping for Nikon products and I truly found the overall line lacking in variety and multiple pricepoints. It's either super expensive or dirt cheap.

Lenses / Seeking advice for 10 stop ND filter in high key
« on: November 17, 2012, 10:21:43 AM »
I'm spending Thanksgiving in Sun Valley and will be shooting a variety of wide and UWA landscape scenes. i.e. Baldy, the Lodge, Sawtooths etc.

I've had good learning experiences this fall with my B+W 3.0 10 stop ND filter but have yet to try it in a snow covered or high key scene.

Any tips would be appreciated.

TIA

Speedlites, Printers, Accessories / Canon 9500 MkII Printer for $199.00?
« on: November 15, 2012, 10:59:22 PM »
After all the rebates, it's 199 from B&H, I think I'd be insane to not get this as I cannot get calibrated to my only local lab as well as I'd like. I use Epson 3880's at school off and on with impeccable results but I don't always have access.

Hmmmmmmmm….

Lenses / 5D3 and TC's
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:40:58 AM »
I have read the lists and charts written a couple years back that AF was only available on 1D series bodies when using a Canon TC with a compatible lens.
Has this changed with the 5D3?
I have zero experience with TC's and am interested in using one with my 70-200 f/4 and 200 2.8.
Can anyone point me to a list or chart of compatibility and AF with the 5D3?

Also, do the Kenko's AF with all lenses and bodies where the Canon's do not?

TIA

Lenses / 50 mm Can't make up my mind!
« on: October 25, 2012, 02:39:47 PM »
It's between the Sigma 50 1.4 and the Canon 1.4

I've had the Canon in the past on a crop and wasn't that impressed by the micro motor. The DoF wide open was nice but not THAT good and the price is right. I believe on a FF it will shine a bit brighter.
I hate the dicey risk you take with Sigmas. I have had decent luck with them but I know it's hit or miss.

Is the Sigma THAT much better that it's worth it to try 2 or 3 attempts at a good one?

(On a 5D3 and Elan 7)

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Kirk PZ-148
« on: October 19, 2012, 07:51:08 PM »
Anyone using the Kirk PZ-148 plate for the 5D3 and a hand strap? I have one on the way and was wondering if it's the wonder solution I've been looking for. I hope the fit is flush with the contours and the hand strap doesn't loosen the plate.

EOS Bodies / When using a hand strap, such as the E2 strap
« on: October 13, 2012, 02:39:40 PM »
I know some shooters keep a finger out which is what I used to do on a lighter body such as my old T2i and what I currently do on my Elan 7 but on my 7D and now the 5D3 I just need the stability. What I wonder is how do you have your Tv/Av dials mapped? I switched the default to the Av on the back dial for a while so my exposed thumb could easily adjust but I found it screwed me up when shooting film where I keep my finger out and change it on the top dial.

What seems to work best?

Lenses / Next lens in my bag query
« on: October 10, 2012, 07:19:45 PM »
So….my lens lineup got all jumbled and rearranged when I went from the 7D to the 5D3. I had this setup:

10-22
35 f/2
50 1.4
24-70 2.8 L
70-200 f/4

I now have:
17-35 Tamron (love it)
40 Flapjack
24-70 2.8 L
70-200 f/4

Funny how the two niches I am spending most of my time and actually making money from these days don't have lenses represented in that lineup.

I'm missing a low light prime (50/85/100)
Dedicated Macro (EF 100 2.8 or Tamron 90 SP Di 2.8)

It's hard for me to pick up a FL too close to the 40 because the 5D3 does so well in low light but I'd like something with more and better blades. The 85 1.8 vs 100 f/2 conundrum is swirling in my head as well as the Macro need and not wanting a redundant or similar  FL with these two lenses. I've had a 85 before but that was with a T2i. Will I experience it in a different light? And I don't mean focal length but sharpness; center and corner, CA etc.

I've been using the 24-70 and 70-200 for portraiture (group/family outdoors)
and a Lensbaby Macro kit for …Macro.

Do you see the need for me to get a sub 2.8 lens? I WILL be getting a dedicated Macro but will it be fast enough for portraiture? I know it's sharp enough :)

Thanks in advance for your thoughts y'all.

I really want/need a ground level tripod for macro work which will hold a 5D3 + EF 100 2.8.
The model I want is a Redged RTA-320.
Not available anywhere in the world at this time.
I am not willing to shell out for a Kirk or RRS and am thinking my second choice would be a cut down standard pod. I'm thinking about perhaps a used 2001/190. It's my first choice since it's reliable and the legs are all bolt on so it would be easy to cut with a hacksaw guide. I have no problem with that since I come from a cycling wrenching background and have cut many steerer tubes etc.

Anyone here do the same? Or anyone have a recommend for something like the Redged?

TIA
